The federal income tax has existed since 1913. How was the federal government funded before - excise taxes, import duties/tariffs, whiskey taxes, etc.. clearly, SHRINKING size of the federal government is a big necessary step as is being done in real time. And YES necessities ie food, housing etc s/b exempted as states do today.NOT value-added tax, but taxed at end-use. The beef steak gets taxed at the restaurant, not on the ranch, not in the grocery store...How much money is in the cash underground economy - drug dealers, thieves, etc..? do they buy cars? boats?

I am a CPA tax practitioner. i advocate the Fair Tax approach presented by Buddy Carter. It captures the underground economy, rewards capital formation activities (interest and dividends not taxed), easily administered (most states have a sales tax already), frees IRS personnel, tax lobbyists, CPAs, tax lawyers for more productive work, and places more control in taxpayer - consume and pay tax or save and don't pay tax. What's not to like?

Consumption tax is better option - Flat tax still has issues of income and deduction definitions/legislation.

If the govt is shut-down, then how does he get sworn in?

my go to trick to get the city where i live to pick up debris--- I call the fire department serving that area and explain that no one has come to pick up debris for several months, so i am having a bon-fire to get rid of it and would they like to attend in case it gets out of control. The city had it picked up the next day.

My two cents worth..it would make more sense to me to pay the tax and then file a claim in the Courts for refund on the basis of the various theories discussed herein ie

1. The 16th amendment was not properly ratified.
2. It is unlawful to tax wages.
3. Only Corporations are subject to tax so an and so forth. At least this avoids the trap many find by not paying and then are jailed. I believe that there are many novel legal arguments upon which one may prevail particularly if appealed all the way to the Supreme Court.

What can be done to correct this travesty?
