Unless you can rationally explain why they didn't confiscate the laptop and destroy it with a theory that's better than my current one I suggest you take it easy with the dooming.

I just realized something. If the laptop was obtained by the repair shop in April 2019 then how was it part of the plan? What's the latest dates of messages / images contained on the laptop? Did they obtain it in 2018?
It looks like it contains images and messages from 2019.
