Matthew 5 KJV

20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

21 Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:

22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Didn't he specifically tell Magdalene go and sin no more? Also, I'm pretty sure the Book of Revelation is pretty much the manifest destruction of mankind's sin finally pissing God off one too many times without an inkling of repentance.

He did say this to a variety of people, including a man He healed who was crippled, and a woman caught in adultery (in John) after He told her He would not her He would not condemn her.

Yeah he also said “who is left to accuse you?” And then he said “neither do i accuse you”. So theres an obvious balance of Jesus various ways of dealing with different situations. But the Bible does say Jesus’ heart (or his core being) is “gentle and humble“ Matt 11:29. Thats not to say he isnt also other things at other times but it is his default setting if you will

"Kill" meant murder at the time the KJV was translated.

"Smite" and "slay" is lawful and/or accidental killing, and can mean anything from "justifiable homicide" to "involuntary manslaughter", depending on context.

Here's a link to Numbers 35, which lays down the rules regarding "manslayers" and "murderers."

https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Numbers+35&version=KJV

It breaks down the differences between involuntary manslaughter and death, and even discusses what we would refer to as premeditated first degree murder-

20 But if he thrust him of hatred, or hurl at him by laying of wait, that he die;

If the manslayer claims he killed someone unintentionally, he had to flee to one of six cities as outlined in the above chapter until he was either tried and convicted of his crimes (which required 2 or more witnesses) or until the current high priest died, at which point he was free to return to his native city.

permalink parent save report block reply

– PowderRoomPolitics 3 points 4 years ago +3 / -0

This is not an either / or but a both / and. Notshirley78 is right that it involves a change of attitude- but that change also includes a change of action. Repentance includes both changing our attitude about sin - to agree with God about it's deadly nature, and change of action- Go and sin no more.

change your Attitude is the meaning of repent. If you change your Attitude to what you do..like stealing from someone then you won't do it again and you will feel happy ..no longer weighed down by fear of being found out or punished etc. So no longer missing the mark of being happy. It's a very simple thing...people dragging in hell etc ..adding fear ignorance and stupidity to thecmix is unnecessary.

Your advice is correct only to those who "despise wisdom," and, "Hate knowledge."

You know what- your comment just clicked something in my brain. YOLO. That’s the phrase used literally everywhere. In songs, on social media. It gets ingrained into your head. Then you go out with your friends, and the opportunity to do something immoral comes up, and you hesitate for a minute bc your conscience kicks in, and you ask your friends or yourself if this bad action is something you should do- and what is their response? They tell you “YOLO.” You tell yourself “YOLO.” And do the bad thing bc “you only live once.” But that’s not true. You don’t only live once. You have this life and then an afterlife- so you live twice. The yolo phrase insidiously convinces ppl to sin and at the same time subconsciously tells them that they don’t need to worry about going to hell. With it being used in so many songs, it’s stuck into your brain on a deep level (for ppl who listen to that kind of music) take this music video for example that has the type of artists that are popular enough to influence a lot of young ppl https://youtu.be/z5Otla5157c

John 11:26 (KJV) And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

There is only one life; there is the exchange of bodies from that which is terrestrial to that which is celestial.

1 Corinthians 15:40 (KJV) [There are] also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial [is] one, and the [glory] of the terrestrial [is] another.

Shouldn't be saying anything about going to hell or not? While it's true that God is the judge, it is definitely a Christian's responsibility to warn about hell while spreading the Gospel. We'd be remiss if we didn't mention it on occasion. I do agree that it's not proper to try to scare someone into salvation but hell is real and, unfortunately, it's full of lost souls. People should be told about it. Jesus mentions hell more than anyone else in the Bible if I'm not mistaken.

Jesus was a Jew who ate with sinners and called out the establishment religion with vitriol and did not mince words. He also said to sell all your possessions, pick up your cross and follow Him.

No, he was not a total hippie like some people see, but He wasn't a Republican voting gun toting white man either. Nor did He seem at all interested or concerned with the acquisition of personal wealth. I mean He even instructed people to pay their taxes...

I'm not going to pretend to know the Will of God, however the original post isn't wrong. You should never use fear to teach the love of God.

"Go and sin no more." He wasn't confirming her in her vice when he got the mob off her; he saved her so she would amend her ways. What about the whip He braided Himself in order to drive the money changers from the temple? The tables he flipped? The Pharisees He continually admonished? ___

"You serpents, generation of vipers, how will you flee from the judgment of hell?" [Matthew 23:33] ___

___But I say to you, that whosoever is angry with his brother, shall be in danger of the judgment. And whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. And whosoever shall say, Thou Fool, shall be in danger of hell fire." [Matthew 5:22]

_____Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you go round about the sea and the land to make one proselyte; and when he is made, you make him the child of hell twofold more than yourselves." [Matthew 23:15]

____And if thy eye scandalize thee, pluck it out. It is better for thee with one eye to enter into the kingdom of God, than having two eyes to be cast into the hell of fire:" [Mark 9:46]

____Enter ye in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there are who go in thereat." [Matthew 7:13]

____"He said therefore to the multitudes that went forth to be baptized by him: Ye offspring of vipers, who hath shewed you to flee from the wrath to come?" [Luke 3:7]

____And when the Son of man shall come in his majesty, and all the angels with him, then shall he sit upon the seat of his majesty. [32] And all nations shall be gathered together before him, and he shall separate them one from another, as the shepherd separateth the sheep from the goats: [33] And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on his left. [34] Then shall the king say to them that shall be on his right hand: Come, ye blessed of my Father, possess you the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world... [41] Then he shall say to them also that shall be on his left hand: Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels. [Matthew 25]

_____And Scripture continues on: "Being filled with all iniquity, malice, fornication, avarice, wickedness, full of envy, murder, contention, deceit, malignity, whisperers, [30] Detractors, hateful to God, contumelious, proud, haughty, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, [31]foolish, dissolute, without affection, without fidelity, without mercy. [32] Who, having known the justice of God, did not understand that they who do such things, are worthy of death; and not only they that do them, but they also that consent to them that do them." -Romans 1

“DO NOT JUDGE, etc...” means “Don’t be a hypocrite”. This is the most twisted and taken out of context verse in the whole bible.

We aren’t permitted to judge another’s soul, that belong to God. But of course we’re to judge another’s actions, admonish one another in charitable, fraternal correction; even our court systems are based on judgment of another’s actions: ___ Let the word of Christ dwell in you abundantly, in all wisdom: teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual canticles, singing in grace in your hearts to God. No we shouldn't judge the disposition of someone's soul.

However some confuse calling someone from sin with judgement.

St. James says that correcting a sinner has many spiritual benefits, not only for the sinner, but also for us:

James 5:20: let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

And whether we want to admit it or not, we are indeed our brother's keeper:

EZEKIEL 3

[18] If, when I say to the wicked, Thou shalt surely die: thou declare it not to him, nor speak to him, that he may be converted from his wicked way, and live: the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but I will require his blood at thy hand.

[19] But if thou give warning to the wicked, and he be not converted from his wickedness, and from his evil way: he indeed shall die in his iniquity, but thou hast delivered thy soul.

[20] Moreover if the just man shall turn away from his justice, and shall commit iniquity: I will lay a stumblingblock before him, he shall die, because thou hast not given him warning: he shall die in his sin, and his justices which he hath done, shall not be remembered: but I will require his blood at thy hand.

But if you on your part warn the wicked man to turn from his [evil] way and he does not turn from his [evil] way, he will die in his sin; but you have saved your life. EZ. 33:9

Not to oppose error is to approve it; and not to defend truth is to suppress it; and indeed to neglect to confound evil men, when we can do it, is no less a sin than to encourage them.

It’s interesting to look at the comments here and reflect on the original quote, “Jesus never called out sinners.” Does the author means “sinners” as in “everybody on the planet except Jesus” or the gospel use where “sinners and tax collectors” (not the Pharisees/scribes Mark 2:16) are with him?

It’s interesting to me that there’s all this arguing in these comments because I don’t know how people read that word in the tweet.

They are. Jesus did in fact call out sinners, what he never did was condemn them and that is the difference.

Hell should never come up in discussions with the lost. Christ was pretty ambiguous and for good reason.

But as far as what the expectation is, the rest of the post is right. We need to love people. Unconditionally. Judgement is for the Lord. They say the Lord works in mysterious ways and keeping accountability through non-believers seems like one such mysterious way.

You asked for other sins He rebuked aside from the Pharisees’ sins. I gave you examples of the sins he rebuked. I’m sorry you can’t understand your own question. You might want to brush up in the strawman fallacy usage also.

Greed & selfishness, condemned to hell: “There was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen; and feasted sumptuously every day. [20] And there was a certain beggar, named Lazarus, who lay at his gate, full of sores,

[21] Desiring to be filled with the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table, and no one did give him; moreover the dogs came, and licked his sores. [22] And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom. And the rich man also died: and he was buried in hell. [23] And lifting up his eyes when he was in torments, he saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom: [24] And he cried, and said: Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, to cool my tongue: for I am tormented in this flame. [25] And Abraham said to him: Son, remember that thou didst receive good things in thy lifetime, and likewise Lazarus evil things, but now he is comforted; and thou art tormented. -LUKE 16

Jesus broke bread with sinners in hopes to help them change their ways. To get a sinner to repent and follow God/Jesus made heaven rejoice. If a lefty woke up and changed their ways and realized they were on the wrong side and came to our side would we not rejoice?

However, no one is without sin except Jesus. You dont have to approve of someone's life but make sure your life is in order before judgements with exceptions like murder or hurting a child etc. Casting judgements usually doesnt make someone wake up and change their ways, but breaking bread with them and showing through examples just might.

And if they are a lost cause,a taxman, then dont even bother with them. Thats between them and God. We walk amongst evil blood, not everyone is God's child and therefore not everyone is able to be saved. Bless you all.

God is Love and there is no darkness in Him at all. People who use God to threaten people into obedience are no better than then the deep state.

There is a doctrine of condemnation that Gpd himself says there is there fore no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus. Christ works was so complete and perfect that even men can't ruin it. OUR complete savior.

I call that Catholic realism. See, in the Catholic faith, you can commit any crime as long as it furthers the reach of that faith. The Pope, Cardinals, Bishops, and Priests will absolve you of your sins as long as hat you do furthers the Church's goal.

Matthew 21:12-13

12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, 13 and said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

Matthew 21:42-44

42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? 43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. 44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

Scripture does not say he beat the money changers, simply that he cleared them out with a whip - potentially just as firing in the air can warn trespassers, so could cracking a whip in the air.

Never knew he invented the non-lethal weapons industry too!!!

Jesus knew when he died the body would become the temple if he dwells in you then it up to you to protect the temple of God! As your body is not yours but his!

Jesus said “occupy until I come. Occupy is a military term like Hold the line!

He called out sinners all the time! Most of the “regular” people, those subjected to the Pharisees, He had compassion on (to the woman caught in adultry: go and sin no more) but to those judging others, He called them vipers and snakes and more. Jesus is very clear where He stands on the subject of sin and our soul.

Indeed I agree but disagree on one point. Jesus, the man was taken up by angels NO MAN has ascended accept he who came down. God came down and was the Spirit in Jesus but the body as a man was taken but the spirit ascended. This gives God complete sovereignty over who enters his domain, Heaven John 3:13 (KJV) And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, [even] the Son of man which is in heaven.

They were not held to the knowledge that we have, only to the knowledge they were given by God. As Paul said: Abraham trusted in God , and it was counted to him as righteousness. (Romans 1 - 4)

Actually they knew Jesus , the deliver would come and accepted he died for their sins thus being born again.

They looked forward to his coming and did not reject him.

Grace is seen throughout OT

Those present accepted or rejected who he was

We look back to the Cross and accept or reject!

Romans 4:3 (KJV) For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

Galatians 3:6 (KJV) Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.

James 2:23 (KJV) And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

The OT believers believed as we do by Faith. Abraham was called the Father of faith Romans 4:16 (KJV) Therefore [it is] of faith, that [it might be] by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

Moses wiped out entire tribes. God commands prophets to kill everyone in certain areas in the Bible.

People gotta stop it with the "Jesus wouldn't lift a finger if his face was beaten in by tyrants and the tyrant lovers. You should be that way too!"

In case people forgot, these people are trying to kill you, your family and your country. And the sheep will cheer them on.

Half this sub tours the 2nd amendment and the other half wants to wash sheep feet.

33 You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? 34 Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, 35 so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. 36 Truly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

I mean the Church never changed directions people schismed or fell into heresy. I go to what is the Church, the one I attend being the Coptic Orthodox Church which was founded by St. Mark. We don't do the flashy fire and brimstone preaching our Saints made things like St. Basil the Great who made the Basiliad which was a hospital for the sick and a community for others. The Church is known as a Hospital and God is the Great Physician we take those who are hurt, sick, and lost. Christ didn't come for those who were righteous but the sinners you don't need a doctor if you are well.

I absolutely love being Orthodox, I suffered so much, I struggle so much as well but the Church is there for me my priest is there for me, if it wasn't for the community and relationship I have I never would have stuck to being Christian. I am pushed every day by my priest to keep up my prayers, keep reading the Bible, and making sure I attend Divine Liturgy. All this ways are how my relationship with God grows by participating in a life with Him.

Amen! I recently shared to a Christian friend this is the greatest problem among believers not attracting the unbelieving!

Just as OT says Leviticus 19:19 (KJV) Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.

Christians say cussing is a sin ONLY if you are speaking Gods word! Wool is flesh fabric…Linen is a plant fabric(we are a plant of the Father)

Often we are working only flesh minded, then cussing isn’t a sin

Yet if in Spirit working to blend these garments together is a sin! As I would say “don’t preach and cuss!”

Christians say cussing and cursing is the same! No it is not! God cursed the serpent, Jesus cursed the fig tree. They were not cussing at them! They said a thing to curse them.

Jesus said a fountain should not bring forth both blessings and cursing. Same but opposite side of the other. A blessing will bring good and life a curse can bring a disaster or death!!!

IF ONLY WE TAKE THE TIME TO UNDERSTAND HIM RATHER THAN INTERPRET HIM TO FIT OUR OWN JUDGMENTS

absolutely true though

Jesus was defiant of the status quo and he loathed the religious establishment at that the time.

Jesus told Jews their hundreds of laws and their commandments were all meaningless.

Jesus simplified the entire process, bringing it down two commandments and presenting the idea of consciousness being a key factor in determining what is a sin.

Jesus also spoke the truth, that works or the self were not ways to the father. He Is the Only Way!

▲ 1 ▼
– ProPatriaMori [S] 1 point 4 years ago +1 / -0

He didn’t loathe the “religious establishment”; He loathed the hypocritical ways of Pharisees. Christ didn’t buck up to His Faith, didn’t say anything was meaningless, didn’t overthrow it. He practiced it. He fulfilled the Law, abolished the ceremonial, but the moral remains intact. For example, the 10 Commandments are still intact, but circumcision is not. He is the New Covenant.
