Last few years there was a push for UK homes to have "smart meters" installed, I even saw videos of police aiding energy companies breaking into peoples homes who had refused the smart meter to get them installed
I think this might have been in prep for the ability to "smart" switch off the power at certain times like we're now seeing. maybe that was the real reason, the planned energy crisis

I was a teen in UK during the early 1970s. There was an energy crunch and high inflation leading to strikes from energy workers such as coal miners. We had similar circumstances to those described in the story - rolling blackouts and random power cuts.I remember the family sitting around with blankets and candles in the evening.
I really don't want to do it again now but having said that it was at least tolerable and to a young kid kind of exciting in a perverse way. Much worse would be if food and water supplies were seriously disrupted.
