Learning starts at home. Every one of the items he listed is taught in public school, I teach them. You're kid's nose is too far up that phone you won't let me confiscate. Public school is definitely trash, but so is the average modern parent.

That is why my wife has to potty train the kids at school. Parents are too darn lazy and not consistent with their kids.
That's crazy. I remember when my child started school. In the "Enrollment" packet was an instruction sheet that specified if your child cannot do these things, they may be deferred until they can.
Potty trained was one of them, as well as spelling their name, and fastening their own shoes.

I used to travel for work. I worked with a guy who went through Chicago Public schools. He seemed highly intelligent. But as a black man it seemed he always saw the world in racial terms. On father's day, at our picnic, we had a conversation with our grandson and his girlfriend. Both of them are in their junior year of college going after teaching degrees. They paint a really bad picture of dumbed down kids. My grandson's girlfriend has been subbing at a local school. She tells us the kids in junior high don't know how to spell, punctuate or even end a sentence. She shows them where the commas and the periods need to go. We are in trouble.

It depends on where you take the data. As a good patriot teacher, I taught my kids about the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, about the events leading up to the Revolutionary war, and the founding fathers. This was all in the fourth grade.
Their intent is far more insidious than simple babysitting.
I was in a restaurant Houston, Texas a few years ago. My daughter knew several people who worked there, and they had graduated from the local high school.
When a waitress asked "will there be anything else?", I said "yes... who won the Civil War, the Union or the Confederacy?" She had no idea. She went and asked another waitress, who also didn't know. They talked to a guy who worked at the restaurant, and he didn't know either. One thought the Civil War was fought in the 1960's.
Finally, a fourth person, a waitress, came to our table beaming because SHE knew that the Union North won. She also knew it was some time in the 1800's.
When they all walked away except our waitress, my daughter said "That's like not knowing who Gandhi was". Our waitress then asked "Who's Gandhi?"
Yup... these were all high school graduates, living in an area that was directly affected by the Civil War... and they had zero knowledge of it. My kids could tell me from 1st grade about the Civil War and most other aspects of our history.
Yet if they see a confederate flag, they just know to hate it, but don't really know why....
I have a younger sister who just graduated high school recently and can promise that she wouldn't know any of these. This might be a bit of an "outlier" case as she's learning challenged and isn't the average student, but it's still crazy and a bit scary how school doesn't teach much anymore.
I also find that there is a complete lack of teaching of practical skills in high school. Of course parents should be teaching some of these things, but not all parents are great at that. I feel like we should put together a list of common things that everyone should know. Things like...
-How to change a tire
-Basics of managing personal finances
-Standard home maintenance, not even complex stuff but like how to change a furnace filter, if a door squeaks add oil
-Basic electrical, if power is out in a certain room check the breaker panel and see if one tripped
-How to measure something before you move it so you know it fits (blew my mind that she didn't think to do this)
-how to unplug a toilet, and how to shut off water to one if it starts to flood
-basic computer stuff like if one isn't turning on, perhaps check if it's plugged in? I get this one at work a lot, fully grown adults reach out to IT because their computer came unplugged, or the network cable got disconnected, or because their mouse ran out of batteries. COME ON PEOPLE!!!
-Check your car's oil. People have blown engines and are hit with expensive repairs since they either don't know how to open their hood, locate the dipstick, and literally look at it (or are too lazy, so they should also learn the importance of it)
Like basic life skills that everyone should know! Stuff that should be common knowledge, but apparently isn't.
I used to drive the teachers crazy (Shout out to my 4th grade teacher Mrs Demaree. I actually was able to contact her years later and thank her. Havent gotten back in touch in even more years. But she was the only one who even bothered to try to get through to me.
That said, I drove them all crazy because I wouldn't give a crap about whatever they were up there talking about, or turning in homework - but when i had to do the standardized tests id always blow the other scores out the water. That showed i wasnt stupid i was just willing to sit there and pretend they were actually teaching me anything.
Public Education isnt about learning how to use your brain, its about learning to shut it off. It's not intellect its obedience. At least im old enough to have escaped that madness before they decided to change the one solid universal language and be like "yeah, we changed math...2+2=5 now. welcome to common core) and i wasnt demonized for being white yet lol

I'm reading a book called "the real Lincoln". It's very eye opening. I think this is what history is... you know the players, you know the stories, however there's always another side we don't hear about. Everyone who knows the truth is dead. I had a friend once tell me the newspapers made her so mad at what they wrote. I told her they aren't writing it for her, they are writing it for the future people. The future will read the newspapers and think they are real. Re-writing history as it's being made.
