1984 dystopia has arrived. Ford wants to put listening devices in vehicles to monitor people’s conversations…wtf? Is this real? (twitter.com)

Phones already have this. Your PC’s already have this. Being installed in a Ford shouldn’t raise alarms. I mean…who buys a Ford nowadays? Severely misinformed people about the quality of vehicles that’s who, lol.

Consider this. If the feds impound your car they could access this info. Maybe they want your movements, maybe they want to use whatever smart tech in the Ford to open some doors in your house. If you don't have a garage but do have a smart lock they could use that. They could also turn off/on lights before a raid. Maybe they will even be able to access the device remotely (like a smart meter)...

They may not simply be able to use your phone if they can't get into it, but tech in a car could have the same functions - likely without strong encryption. It will also be a boon for burglars.

Fords used to suck.. Outside of a Saturn, I’ve only owned Fords.

I feel the opposite. Fords used to be good. My Dad has always been a Ford man. For 50+years. He’s only recently thinking of switching to Toyota. Ford use to have metal bolts. They use plastic a lot today. Bumpers falling off. My dad went through that personally. Was shameful. And not just Ford. Chevy, GMC, Dodge. Ain’t worth much nowadays.

Toyota of the past few years is a no go by all accounts. Personally I'm sticking with my 2001 Tacoma and 1995 Hiace until I run them into the ground. Then I'll look for a 3d gen 4runner or something else at least 15 years old.

About right. A lot of everything these past few years has been taking a nosedive. I mean I know everything break down eventually. But those older Toyota’s and even older Nissan's were ironclad.

I'm very happy with my Roush mustang.

It's only half ford I guess.

I have a 2018 with 183k, runs like a top. But the mere suggestion of this won't have me buying another. I like the Tacoma, well built and not a unionized company. I'd buy American if the commies didn't have unions building everything. I'm finished with that crap.

Source? Just because this woman spouts it, doesn’t make it true. Although I would not put it past Ford and the government having a deal to either get loans or governmental contracts.

It's certainly "truthy". OnStar already creeps on anyone dumb enough to own a car with OnStar.

They're probably putting in an Alexa or Google device, or creating a sort of a competitor device but made for cars.

I don't think Ford cares to listen, but they want that money from the govt, insurance agencies, law enforcement, and nosey states like CA.

This is probably more disclosure.

All new Fords already have listening devices and have had them for almost a decade at this point. Since about 2015-2016 at minimum. If it has any sort Blue Tooth control. That you can use to control any connected devices like phones. Your car is by extension able to listen to you and record conversations.

Well, since I will never buy an American-made vehicle again, this is moot for me.

My dream car is a 1970 - 1972 Chevy C-10 V-8/ manual…

It is already there if you have satellite communication in your vehicle. OnStar and such can listen to anything you say. Just like your cell phone and your Smart TVs.

Every single modern car already has a "listening device" aslso known as a Microphone. This became a standard feature back when "hands free" was pushed down every ones necks.

Its original purpose was to allow drivers to manipulate functions of the vehicle with their voice. (ie Change radio station, Reply to a text or phone call, Dictate navigation instructions to navigation, etc)

In some vehicles this was a button press on the steering wheel, eventually it was just always on when the likes of OnStar and other vehicle monitoring services came out.

As most have already said this is not likely to spy on you, your cell phone does that exceptionally well already. I haven't had time to look over this "new" patent but I imagine if anything it is probably a new location in the vehicle for the microphone rather than a new conceptual ideal of voice recording.

In other news, Harbor Freight has a sale on wire cutters - film at 11.

Shit don't get me started on Harbor Freight, during my time there Corporate was breathing down everyones neck to gather as much personal information as they could from customers.

Last I remember, 80% name "capture" and email "capture" was demanded, no ifs and or buts.

For Motor Company has just filed a patent,...

is not the same as installing the device.

It's a bad idea, I doubt it's patentable, it doesn't improve Ford's marketability, it's a violation of civil rights.

But, it's not a directive to install anything.

Things have ALREADY been happening in this direction. Your new vehicles with its new tires likely have tiny antennas built into the valve stems for remote tracking. Remember the recent bloated law that included infrastructure provisions for tracking and taxing drivers based on per mile usage? They're going to start on that sooner than you think.

New cars have a feature that amplifies the voice the driver so that passengers in the back can better hear. Also, the driver can speak commands to the car in the same way people talk to Alexa. So, I assume everything said in our newer cars is stored in some computer somewhere ...ready to be searched by AI.
