Pearls are her sorority symbol, she always has something with pearls on.
Or so she says. My daughter was in a sorority and they ALL wear pearls when at University. It's not just one sorority but all of them. But that's only while at Sorority events. Since then, whenever any of her 'sisters' get together many years later, no one is wearing pearls as a daily thing. It's just not in style right now.
My guess is she's been told they highlight her white natural teeth, which they do. And also, she can wear the hidden bluetooth without anyone knowing for sure that she's receiving comms.
There is one other possibility I just considered. She might be hard of hearing and these can be used as a sort of hearing aid/amplification tool. If she were seen wearing actual hearing aids, that would make her seem 'old' and infirm and she wouldn't want that.
