As someone who's seriously looked into living south of the border, I can assure you that every government south of Texas takes their borders very seriously, especially where Gringos are concerned. You may be welcome to visit and spend your money, but if you want to stay, you'd better be independently wealthy or have a steady and demonstrable source of income.
