There's another interpretation that we get from Paul the Apostle. Seems he identified the Israel of God almost 2000 years ago. BTW this is not replacement theology it's fulfillment theology.
The Apostle Paul tells us in his letter to the Romans who the true "Jews" are:
Romans 2:28-29 - "For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God."
Here is Paul again in Romans telling us that not all of ethic "Israel" is really "Israel":

Here's Paul saying that only those are are Christs' are of Abraham's seed/descendants:

The tribe of Judah essentially stole the name of Israel, there was originally a United Israel, but Judah split as a separate kingdom, Israel was conquered by the Neo-Babylonians and expelled the other tribes. Judah remained a puppet/client state of the Neo-Babylonian Empire but eventually the the of tribe of Judah became the only remaining tribe as all the others mixed with the rest of Europe and the Middle East or wherever. Then in the modern era they claim the name Israel. Whether you consider that them stealing the name or them having a right to it as the last remaining tribe is up to opinion.

Israel's spiritual state when they're regathered isn't really what decides if modern Israel is "legit" in prophecy.
Prophets like Zechariah and Ezekiel actually show Israel coming back in unbelief first, then later having a spiritual awakening when the Messiah comes.

I am undecided but the way that Israel launched 300 odd attacks to take out all the Syrian military and other assets was sobering.
