Remain calm. This was, among other things, intended to expose the problems of the current H1-b system, including the fraud. Remember that quite often things will not be as simple as they seem.
I think its a basic cash flow crisis concern. When his company was on the brink of default at times he knows a higher american wage would have decimated his company's chance at survival. Every American business owner knows this fear.

Actually. What started this whole fiasco. Was some Indian Tech CEO spouting off about eliminating caps on H1Bs.
And things spiraled from there. With Elon and Vivek weighing in. In turned something that would have likely blown over in a day. Into a multi-day fiasco.
It’s been a mask off moment for a lot of people though. Some of the ‘Highly Skilled’ H1Bs who’ve also been spouting off generally do seem to resent White Americans.
There’s the White People who don’t like anyone who can’t trace their ancestry to Western Europe.
Then you’ve got the White people who feel like they can finally get a weight off their chest. After a decade or two of anger and resentment by Corporations prioritizing profits and Diversity at cost to White Americans. Which often comes off as racist tirades. When it’s less they are actually legitimately racist and more they’ve just been angry for years and years. And a lot of hard feelings are being dropped all at once in a public setting.
And then there’s people, often immigrants, angrily replying. And saying yet more harsh and heinous shit. Vivek and Elon have both in the past 2 days called White Americans Lazy, and Retarded the past few days. Though Elon has since deleted some of those Tweets.
There’s also Trolls on all sides seeking to inflame tensions and cause chaos.
On the bright side. It’s put a spotlight on the Abuses of the H1B program. The tendency of Corporations to privatize Benefits and socialize their loses. And the over reliance of Tech on comparatively cheap H1B expertise they can work like Dogs.
Honestly if they had said something like “We’ll need the expertise of H1Bs for the immediate future. But we will invest X amount of Dollars in building Merit-Based American Educational Infrastructure and Expertise for our industry.”
They probably would have been able to head off quite a bit of the outrage.

I now notice that he also is implying that the HB1 is what is behind America being strong.
"Cheap labor"? Do you know how much it costs a company to sponsor a candidate on an H1B visa? And then they have to pay a salary that's attractive enough for him/her to move to America (not cheap). And the health insurance.
I considered moving to the USA myself many years ago. But, at the time, I was told that I couldn't get a job without a "green" card (blue & white, actually) and I couldn't get a green card without a job. Then there was the matter of health insurance, moving costs, lawyer's fees, greasing a few palms (really) and buying a house for my family. All that plus a really weird (to a Brit, sorry) emphasis on religion. I decided not to bother.
That said, Barry Goldwater wrote me to say that he'd love to have me working in America and it was a pity that I didn't tell him while he was still in the senate legislature and could have helped.
