I would appreciate any and all prayers for safety and care. I'm having a total hip replacement, and although it's almost considered routine, it does involve cutting parts of your body out and replacing them with hunks of metal and plastic :) Problems associated with this surgery are considered rare; I just don't want to be one of those rare cases :) I've asked for prayers in the past for others, and greatly appreciated those, now I'm going to be a little selfish and ask for prayers for myself :) I'll hopefully be able to provide a report tomorrow late afternoon when I'm back in the hotel room next to the hospital. (as long as the pain medication doesn't take away my ability to type :) )

I'm praying for you. It's not selfish to ask for prayers. It demonstrates a clear understanding of the immense power of prayer. Don't stop asking.

You will be fine and be back on your legs right away! I have several friends and family who did the same and recovered fast and pain free :-)

Make sure you take all the pain meds even if you think you dont need them. Go to physical therapy and dont let the scar tissue develop. Best of luck.
Praying for you, Fren.
My mom had one at 79 and she-ll be 90 in September. Changed her life! About two weeks of semi-hell for an 80 yr old, so you oughta do better! Be a soldier with your physical therapy! It's key.
She had the newer anterior approach surgery which is less invasive with less muscle involvement and faster recovery.
Great site. One gets 2 questions a month , i think, unless you have an NPI #. ( National provider i.d.). Gotta be a med professional. ( from which i retired 8 yrs ago medically). Choose ypur question wisely, Grasshopper π

You're not being "selfish" at all. It's our honor to pray to our Lord for our fellow anons' health, healing, safety and happiness. Let us know in a couple days or so how it went if you're up to it and please be careful during your recovery period that you don't do too much too soon.
What time zone?
I've had two, and I am grateful for modern medicine for keeping us on our feet (at least). Hip surgeries seem to be much easier than knee surgeries. May you enjoy a pleasant recovery time.
I was talking to my wife earlier and wondering when the first hip replacement surgery was done. Before that, you just had to live with the pain the rest of your life!
With a total hip replacement, you usually get to be weight bearing as tolerated, so that is good. But you aren't allowed to bend at the hip more than 60-90 degrees (varies, but usually 90 degrees).
Here is a video demonstrating the 90-degree flexion precaution. https://youtu.be/-ocBuicqimI?si=N9NV-FrpeObyIeuZ
Here are the precautions:
Do not bend the hip more than 90 degrees Use tilt back w/c and raise toilet commode. Do not cross legs or feet Do not roll or lie on your unoperated side for the first 6 weeks cuz it makes you adduct past midline. Do not twist the upper body when standing (causes internal rotation) Sleep on the back for the first 6 weeks The patient may benefit from a shower chair or elevated seat for home use Avoid bathing for 8 to 12 weeks (flexed and bent down in the tub) Use aids to put on underwear/socks/shoes for 6 weeks to avoid deep hip flexion angles
Dear Jesus. We lift our friend PhDinNY up to you in prayer. We trust in you and have peace, as our faith in you is strong. Please be with our friend and the surgeon and nurses. Let your guidance and healing power make this surgery a full success with miraculously quick healing. We give you the glory, Dear God. We ask that you give opportunity for PhDinNY to be a witness to the hospital staff and other patients. We thank you even now for all your blessings. Amen.
I would feel the very same, as to everything you are saying. I may have the same thing one day. So I sure do, send up prayers for you that you feel peace and courage, that your routine but significant surgery will go amazingly smoothly and you recovery is really great. Yes please do let us know all is well
Thank you all! (except for that one leftist jerk :) ) Surgery went well; I even woke up in the recovery room without ANY numbness in legs (they did spinal pain block and that often results in residual numbness, or even complete dead feel, in legs). Other than a bout of nausea when about to leave hospital, no significant negative aspects! Perhaps the best thing so far is that I am trying JUST Tylenol for pain management, and it is working! (but that might change by tomorrow :) ). Once again, this website proves it has the greatest people on the internet! I hope this note gets seen by everyone who posted because it would take quite a while to respond to everyone individually :)
I look forward to a full report tomorrow. Iβm exorcising a little faith.π
I bet you're not. Exercising, perhaps?
