What does 666 really mean?
This has been debated for centuries, but the explanation is pretty simple. Here's the answer to the riddle:
Rev 13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.
It's very specific that this number (666) is the number of a man, so who's the man? The answer is found here:
2 Chronicles 9:13 Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year was six hundred and threescore and six talents of gold;
The man was Solomon. His number was six hundred and threescore and six (666). This number corresponded to his talents of gold.
666 is symbolic of money.
The preceding verses then make more sense.
Rev.13:16-17 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
You can't buy or sell without money. All are forced to receive the mark in their right hand, the hand predominantly used in trade.
The beast is the economic system forced upon everyone.
Original Greek translation:
2:24 But unto those of you who are righteous I say, and also unto the rest in Thyatira, even as many as have not followed this doctrine and committed fornication with this woman dressed in scarlet, and which have not known the depths of the ways of Satan, even as she speaks as if his ways are good to seduce you, but they are not; behold, I will put upon you none other burden except that which I have already commanded you.

It's an amazing book, the clearest explanation on the Book of Revelation that I've ever come across.
Edit: Please don't be offended by the title, it doesn't mean what you may think. 666 = Money, Beast = Capitalism, hence the U.S. is essentially the base ("seat") of world-wide Capitalism, not Satan lol.
