I have no idea why on earth home school, which would allow you both to tailor his studies according to his talents and interests, only take about 4 hours/day freeing up lots of time and allowing independent projects and community experience, would be depressing. Freedom is only depressing if you're already mentally enslaved.

You should hear some of the old jokes from South America; they knew the Nazis, including Hitler, had relocated to Argentina.
