I taught cursive for the last 6 years to 3rd graders. Now I’m teaching 5th - 8th (math and social studies). Not one of my old students use it, nor do they know more than a few letters. I have been asking my old students (new students again) why they stopped. I keep hearing “No need to use it with my : phone, iPad, computer, talk to text...”
I get the feeling they will sign their names electronically with their fingerprints, face captures, DNA, or hopefully not yet, a mark in which they can neither buy nor sell without it :(
You are right, I forgot how we have to sign the pin pads at the pharmacy or when using a credit card at the store. It's so sad the kids/young people are not learning skills that should still be used today. I found out a woman I worked with had arthritis bad enough she couldn’t knit anymore. I asked her to bring her knitting needles in. I covered them with oven baked clay. I then asked her to squeeze her fingers into the clay the way she would like to hold them. I baked the clay, and got a gift of bacon wrapped cream cheese filled hot peppers. It was a happy day for both of us.
When I was in school, several decades ago, we were drilled on cursive constantly and we were always always told by every teacher that in Junior High School and beyond we could ONLY use cursive. This is how the adult world writes.
Then in Junior High they just said "yeah, cursive is hard to read, so don't use that, ever."
Always wondered why elementary school pushed us so hard when it was just 100% dropped the moment we were supposed to REALLY start using it.
My children born in the 70s and 80s were taught cursive. I don't know when it stopped. I have often thought of the people who will not be able to read the letters of their mothers and fathers or their Grandparents. And yes , I realized they would not be able to read any of the founding documents.

My sister's kids were born in 2007 and 2009, and they did not learn cursive. They were in 5th grade in 2017 and 2019....... So not sure when it changed, but that starts narrowing it down.
Well, Common Core first raised its ugly head in 2009-2010, so I'm guessing there's a correlation. Also was when districts started hacking music and arts from their curriculum.

Take your children out of the daycare. Homeschool and teach them what they need. I'm happy to have the lil helper learning from my wife and I like our parents taught us. A government-liberal-union "teacher" knows nothing and therefore cannot teach anything other than the printed lies in front of them.
Socialization is important but that's what hanging out and playing after school is for. School is for learning but they're not teaching anymore. The lil one has all her schooling and chores done before her friends get off the bus so she has time to chill/play/watch some cartoons. Our lil one socializes just fine.
My grandson is being taught cursive in his school but he has been moved back to printing because his cursive letters look so bad. My daughter and and I have very nice handwriting , but my sons both look like a kid just learning. I Used to have to read physicians hand writings and I could , but I can't read my son's.
That's odd because I was just thinking about that last week or so. I was surprised that cursive writing hasn't been introduced for my child. I asked my wife's brother if his kids have learned cursive writing yet and the oldest, who is in high school, still haven't learned how to read or write in cursive.
The other odd thing is, there's no spelling exercises at all. My child's teacher said my child is the only one in the class who knows how to spell words properly when asked to, because I believe spelling is vital so I teach my child to spell properly.
I remember when I was my child's age, we had to read literature that's age appropriate, practice writing within the lines, spelling and such. Now it's completely different and for English, my child have to write a report on the changes in the moon, how to operate a business and some other stuff that's not even related to English!
In case if anyone's wondering what my child is going through, yes it's Common Core and I do intend to take my child out of the whole education system here in this state, and switch my child back to traditional studies so probably through home schooling. The good thing is I've already showed my child how to do math the traditional way and the Common Core way and my child said they prefer the traditional way because it's easier!

I wrote a speech about cursive writing being a lost art. The benefits of cursive writing include, but not limited to:
Hand eye coordination (fine motor skills) - you cannot lift off the pen until you finish writing each word
Actually less chance of being unreadable by others, unless it’s from a doctor writing a prescription - that’s scribbling, not cursive writing
SSStylish points
Note taking speed is potentially faster than printing once mastered because you spend less time lifting off the pen for each letter written
I have a hell of a time printing. I tend to mix cursive with printing near the end.

My 12 year old grandson has writing that looks like a retards did in my day. We spent hours practicing cursive. It was the mark of an educated person.
When you think about the one room school houses for farm children and all they taught the kids it just boggles the mind.
Even my 20 year old can't add up in her head, she immediately starts putting the sum in her phone and I tell her the answer before she can finish.
