You should NOT hide it from kids unless you have a child that is never for a second alone. The children that have been told know they can say something or are more vigilant. I have seen stories recently of kids helping other kids not get kidnapped. If they hadn't been informed the children would have just disappeared. You don't have to tell them the worst of it but enough that they are aware. One little girl realized what was happening and smeared green goo she had been playing with on him. He was found and identified easily do to the green goo.
