Updated with MAC steps at the bottom.
Update #2: I want to add that this should only be used temporarily. In the event GAW ever changes their IP address you will need to update your hosts file with the new IP.
Update #3: Added authentication.win record
Hi frens,
Some asked me to make a thread about this directly so that it could be stickied. Mods, if you deem this sticky-worthy go ahead.
For Windows:
located in windows\system32\drivers\etc
there contains a file simply named 'hosts'
copy this file to your desktop
edit it with notepad
at the bottom of the file add these two lines exactly
172.67.145.123 greatawakening.win
104.21.87.229 authentication.win
save the file (to your desktop) - ensure that windows does not add a .txt extension to this file. Then drag and drop it into your windows\system32\drivers\etc folder. Yes on the overwrite.
This will allow you to be able to access GAW even if worldwide DNS ceases to exist.
I would not recommend leaving this configured forever, incase GAW changes IP addresses or anything. But knowing how to do it for temporary purposes is a good idea.
For MAC:
open a terminal
type
Type sudo nano /etc/hosts and press Return
Enter your admin password and press Return
Using the "Nano" text editor can be a bit hard.. but follow these simple steps:
Use the Return key to create some space below the existing records
Input the IP address:
172.67.145.123
Press the Tab key
Enter the domain name:
greatawakening.win
Press the Enter key to start a new line
Input the IP address:
104.21.87.229
Press the Tab key
Enter the domain name:
authentication.win
Save the file by pressing Ctrl + O
Exit with Ctrl + X
U/sillbag Thanks for going into more detail on this!! Could you please find a video on this process for the not so techy users?? Also let’s let people know to add other websites they frequent to their host list as well!!
Make sure you actually spell greatawakening.win correctly
Good catch =p fixed that typo. Thank you
Yeah! Switch to Linux and avoid all this shit. I think too many people have the impression that Linux is about as much of a substitute as what you'd expect from shareware in the '90s.
After I switched, I was Skyping with a friend and I told him I was using Mint and no longer Windows. His impression was like, "Wow, you can do normal computer stuff with Linux?" ree-hee!
That's cool. I've never touched Arch. 15+ years ago, I did get my feet wet with Fedora on an old Win98 laptop. Mint was the most highly-recommended distro for Windows users, so that's what I went with. I chose Mint Mate because it was closer to the interface that Fedora did back then which I liked so much. I'd like to get a used laptop an install Zorin OS on it to see what that's like.
Yes, that is how I understand it. Arch is for the more OCD computer users who want total control over everything. For me, Mint is pretty customizable as it is, as I prefer two panels rather than just one.
With OpenOffice pretty much the only thing that is troublesome on Linux is games and even those are getting more and more support. Windows just isn't needed any more. Why anyone bothers is beyond me. Used to be(15+ yrs ago) you had to be a unix admin like me to use Linux or FreeBSD or BSDi etc. Even SCO required a little basic skill. Now a days some of these distros of Linux so idiot proofed they actually anoy me. I like my Slackware and FreeBSD.
I almost miss the good old days of fixing the configuration files in vi through a bad term-cap on a dumb serial terminal. My mad skills were legendary... :)
The worst is Gnome. I had Ubuntu Mate on my Pi3 and when I got Pi4, I installed Ubuntu only to realize that it was Gnome, which is gayer than a smartphone. So instead I went with Raspbian. My friend in AZ is a Unix/Linux admin, but he only remotes into the servers and is ignorant about the GUIs. I once booted from an install disc of Mint Cinnamon and was able to do a Hangouts vidchat with him and he did not expect that this was possible. In my experience, even for more troublesome stuff, I can just look up online what I need to do and just type the commands in Terminal without even knowing what they do and I can do stuff that way.
Careful. You're showing your age. I still use vim as my editor.
Plus, not fixing configuration files through vi is a choice, man!
Is that a Linux build? if so follow the MAC instructions.
i got it ;) At least sillbag was a gentleman about it. We've got the best community.
How would I do it on FreeBSD though? ;)
I stole the joke by changing it a 'lil. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Ha ha... for a moment there I thought this was serious and I was at a loss to figure out how anyone running FreeBSD wouldn't know how to do this. Sorry been using FreeBSD sense like 1997-8.
type "sudo nano /etc/hosts" and follow the same instructions
I use Arch btw. When i performed my first Arch installation i just blindly followed the instructions on the wiki and at that time i didn't know much about linux, so i just assumed you were on a similar situation. Even now i'm not an expert but i really like it.
PS: i switched to linux in early march of this year.
Even better:
- Get a raspberry pi
- Install pi-hole for dns level ad blocking
- Install unbound so your pi-hole can talk directly to the dns root servers
- Configure pi-hole to use unbound as the upstream dns provider
- Profit
Using unbound means any time the pi-hole has to look up a dns record, it goes directly to the dns root servers to start the lookup. In other words, you bypass the dns server of your ISP, Google, MS, and all the other public facing dns servers that data mine you. A plus for privacy while on the internet.
Been running pihole, gonna look into unbound, sounds pretty cool thanks for sharing
Hell Mr. Handshake
Do you know the difference between a global DNS issue that affects all root server DNS outages?
Because this solution WILL work as long as cloudflares hidden redirect services remain intact.. which in the event of a GLOBAL dns issue, they would remain intact.
The issue is not with cloudflare redirecting the public facing IP to the hidden private IP. The issue is the public facing IP's dns being wiped out.
I have to agree... if cloudflare takes a shit then we are pretty screwed. Do we even know the REAL IPS? I doubt it. Wouldn't do much good protecting the real servers if the public knew the real ips.
Thanks
The Ip address doesn't work right now in the browser bar
you get:
but they might change that in a crisis
same
Maybe i did it differently. I didn't add it to hosts, just put it in the address bar. In any case, It may work when we need it to work.
THIS, is why we RULE!!! u/sillBag has ascended to the next level and lifepoints have recharged to 💯 %. 👍🏽
Does GAW have a confirmed .onion address?
In my opinion this is a really bad idea and should only be done AFTER GAW DNS goes down... reason being, if GAW updated their DNS in the future, with good reason, people will not be able to connect to the GAW servers and likely won't know why since they will have run these commands weeks earlier and forgotten about it.
In general never run sudo commands if you don't know what you're doing...
It’s a backup plan. I can assure you the tech mods are gathering this info for a backup plan
AND!!!
The users here WILL want to know how to connect to GAW incase of a major DNS outage
Yes saving this post offline would be a good move so that one could perform these actions after the fact.
Same here, my thoughts exactly.
I agree this should only be implemented if a problem actually arises. I state similar at the top of my post... This is not a highly recommended way of handling DNS =p
/etc/hosts
Now this should be stickied.
Cool!
One question: How would you reverse it?
Add #'s infront of any lines you add.. this comments them out and disables them.
What does open a terminal mean under mac explanation
How much data is involved in a dns lookup? Meaning ham radios are slow could it be used to serve dns requests?
Transceivers are cheap raspberry pi s are dirt cheap
Could that be used as a temporary dns provider?
Forgive My ignorance. DNS servers are just translators? Give you an IPV4 IPV6 number address translation for example: greatawakening.win=192.168.1.1 ?
Would this apply to iPhones?
Don't believe un-jailbroken iPhones could access the hosts file. But yes it would still apply if you can locate where the hosts file is located on it.
also might have to turn off realtime protection for your antivirus as most protect the hosts file from being changed.
Make sure to add the sub hosts like media.greatawakening.win etc.
sadly, this IP address is owned by Cloudflare and is protected by their gateways.
It is an internal DNS redirect that takes place... a global DNS issue causing the front facing DNS entries to be wiped out would not (generally) affect cloudflare's hidden redirect.
As long as cloudflare's rerouting services are still working internally then a worldwide DNS outage would not affect that. It would affect the public-facing IP address resolution. Not cloudflare's internal resolution.
What about mac users?
Saved locally. Thanks!
Why, at some point I'm not even going to look here anymore.
The need for this site will be coming to an end soon.
Is this something we should do now or just in the event of a blackout? And once we don't need it how do we eliminate. And what about mobile?
I would only do this in the event you are unable to access the site or something DNS related happens that prevents you from accessing the site.
Thanks
I would set it up and type a # in front of each line to comment it out. Then it would have no effect at all right now. Then, if you need to, you can just delete the # in front of the needed lines and resave to make it work.
Or you can save it with a new temp name somewhere you can find it. But you will need to make a note of where you need to put when you need it.
Thanks. I wish I knew about this shit. Computers are not my Forte.
You can't learn it all instantly. I've been studying computers since the mid-70s.
Nice. My dad was a main frame guy in NYC in the 70's
Not sure if static mapping GAW is necessary.
Cloudflare blocks browsing directly by IP address
adding it to your hosts file allows you to browse with hostname and thus it will go through.
