Actually, this is the first useful thing that they have passed in a long time. I actually support this. I appreciate having more daylight hours. I know that the timing is bad, but hey, at least they’re not passing more spending bills, gun control, or federal election laws.

You can't "have more daylight hours".. they are taking away a daylight hour in the winter time so it's a wash. I'd rather not have the sun set at 5pm, personally.

DST is another control mechanism of the elites. Most plebs suffer weight gain and sleep loss around DST. They're fucking with us. It does not "benefit farmers" which is the official narrative, since they have to get up when the animals get up anyway.

I’m happy if they just leave the time at where it is now. I could live with them fixing it at the earlier hour too. I just want them to pick one and keep it.

Yes DST never made sense it’s not like the sun has a clock. Depending on latitude so amount of sun hours.

And the farmers can farm 24x7. Even without it they would work dawn to dusk. Didn't matter what time it was.

The timing matters, particularly up north here in Canada. Last week I would get home from work at 5:30 and the sun would set at 6:30. Not really much time to do stuff. Now with this time it’s light until 7:30. I can take my kids out and actually do stuff in daylight. It makes a meaningful difference as to when you get off work relative to the suns schedule.

The language is convoluted though, as is the tradition.. "daylight savings time" infers by definition a polarity... Can't really call it that right? Like that's the name for the thing they just abolished.... Right?

I didnt read the bill and yes the “savings time” wording is bogus it should be “Adjustment” time since we save nothing but have to adjust our clocks both chrono and body.

I wish they would have split the difference and made it a 30 minutes offset.

Fall back 30 minutes this fall and be done.

Then we'd consistently be 30 minutes out of sync with the entire rest of the world, as time zones are divided into different full hour segments. You can't just move 30 minutes back and still work with the time zones around the world.

YES the kids are what this is about now, hobby gardeners after work should not factor into the decision making when kids are so disproportionately affected. My thought is a half hour compromise, take us back a half hour in the fall and leave it. Otherwise we should look at creating another timezone or two and reconfiguring timezones so the west portions of timezones arent so out of whack

In this case, I think it's to give us more daylight. The plan is to Spring forward permanently March 2024 giving us those extra hours of light each day, never having to "fall back".

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 9 ▼

How is there “extra hours” of daylight? The sun doesn’t have a clock.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 6 ▼
– ersatz 6 points 4 years ago +6 / -0

The purpose used to be for people to have more daylight in the early hours because we were an agrarian society. As the seasons shifted in order to maintain regular hours, the clocks shifted to provide an hour more daylight in the morning and an hour less in the evening. Now we are mostly 8am to 5pm workers. We want daylight in the evenings, not the mornings. Who cares if you drive to work in the dark? We want an hour of daylight when we get home at night to spend with our kids outside.

On December 21st the sun rises at 8:44AM and sets at 3:07PM where I am at. If they make daylight savings time permanent it will be dark until 9:44am when the sun rises. They need to keep normal time not daylight savings time.

It is about the kids getting on the bus in the morning, if we dont fall back then it is dark in the mornings for them for about 2 months depending on where you live, whereas if we keep the standard time then they have some light. I think we should get rid of daylight savings time and keep standard time year round. Everybody is looking at this through the lens of themselves after work, we need to think about the kids!!

No! You can't legislate in extra sunlight!

All this does is move an hour of sunlight from the morning to the evening. This makes little difference in the summer when sunlight is plentiful, but come wintertime you're going to see parents complain that their children are either waiting for the bus in the dark, or worse that all the 16-18 year old high schoolers driving to school in the dark are causing an uptic in accidents.

Apparently, I'd just looked it up earlier today, Congress went to full DST in 1973, and predictably the fake news NY Times shilled for the change prior and called it "stupid" after, and the whole thing was a complete disaster and was swiftly repealed after 8 months.

I'm telling you now, it was a bad idea then, and it is a bad idea now!

If you lock into daylight savings time, that would become standard time. By keeping this DST as normal time, there would be more light at the end of the work day.

This is more important than it seems. This Daylight Savings Time permanent thing was tried in the 1970s, and led to small children waiting outside in the dark for school buses. Who, exactly, wants small children waiting by themselves in the dark?

If their parents are fine with leaving them alone in the dark to wait for the bus why should I have a problem with it? If it's a problem I nominate their parents or guardians deal with the issue as they're not my kids. When my parents were children they walked to school, so if they managed to not die crossing multiple streets I think today's kids will be OK standing on the sidewalk.

Yeah, throughout all my high school years, I went to school when it was still dark cuz I had morning sports workouts and started school at 7AM for extra classes, and then I came home in the dark after sports in the afternoon every day. I did this every winter all winter long throughout highschool. It seriously doesn't matter and I never really gave it a second thought. Sure it was depressing to sometimes be in school all the time that sunlight was out during the week, but that's winter for ya. People here can be such outrage junkies, it's not a trait reserved for the left and their fear porn, that's for sure...

Got to earn their 21% raise somehow, so make it appear like they are “working”. But the can’t read 2000 page “bills” spending more money in a country known for money laundering back to politicians and the powerful. Bet it takes less than 24 hours to print and send the money too, just like government handouts to illegals. U.S. citizens can wait months and years for stimulus checks and empty promises re. student loan forgiveness. I know, student loans were of their own decisions, but I am just using this as an example of non-sensical decisions based on corruption and party affiliation.

In my opinion this might be because they have no power to do anything right now. Yes, they supposedly passed a spending bill with billions of dollars to Ukraine but how do we know that money will actually be sent there, how do we know it's legal? If the government is truly under COG, will these spending bills be legal? I don't know the answer to that and not sure if anyone here really does either. We can theorize all we want but we really don't know.

I’m sure they have an evil agenda for this & might sneak something in the wording that benefits them. However, I’m all for it! I am a different person from March to mid October. The only reason I didn’t have SAD, seasonal affective disorder, is because we really didn’t have a winter until January here in North Carolina. Temps stayed from 60-75 until January I don’t understand it but I have trouble functioning and my mind isn’t as sharp in the winter. It’s probably from multiple pain conditions, IDK.

Interestingly some states or areas don’t participate in Daylight Savings. Hawaii is on regular time & there’s a small part of Indiana that doesn’t change time. Maybe more places, those are the only ones I know of. I wonder if they will fight it.
