Hijacking top comment, they won't take out dns, they will take out ICANN, created by Bill Clinton in 1997, it owns/regulates all dns systems. It is privatized now and located in LA. Everything will fall except satellite backed services. That includes all fiber based cellphone towers. If they do attack dns it will be from the inside, and I could see Google, Microsoft, neustar (Durham indicted owner) all shutting down there's which would reck havoc worldwide.

Is this why Trumps new venture is to create a new AWS like service?

No, this would be at a much lower level than that. I'm not 100% sure ICANN actually controls all of the root servers though.

It should yes. Tor does not use DNS.

If the attack is only on the DNS level then yes (because .onion is not a real TLD and doesn't use DNS), but there are plenty of other ways to shut down the Internet (for a group of websites, or to a group of people).

FOR THE NON LAZY (OR IF THE DNS HAS GONE DOWN):

This tutorial provided by the qagg site gives you a 'hosts' file with certain pre-loaded IP addresses such as their site, x22report.com, truth social, and a few others.

I believe that to get THIS site added to that, we will take a play from another user's tutorial and add the following two lines at the bottom of the hosts file provided by qagg:

172.67.145.123 greatawakening.win

104.21.87.229 authentication.win

If you want to add more sites, this tool seems good for finding website IP addresses.

THIS IS ALL THEORETICAL AND UNTESTED; but something is better than nothing. Any networking experts feel free to add to/revise what I'm saying.

Learn to ping from the command line. Fuck online tools! That is the reason you are easily shut out of internet access.

"Give me a ping, Vasili. One ping only, please." https://yewtu.be/watch?v=jr0JaXfKj68

In this case (Linux!):

ping greatawakening.win -c 1

ping authentication.win -c 1

ping anywebsitepage-important-to.you -c 1

Claims: #-sign is used to indicate code following, but is not part of the code. The number: 1 can be changed for any number you like.

Recommendation:
Learn to use the dig-command for A-records, mail-records and signature-records.

You have more than you know!

I was just thinking something similar when I saw your comment. Should we go back to old school internet/networking? Text based documents? Depends if it's just internet, or also a power outage.

I am sure it never hurts to to able to use a command line, and script things.

Then, in addition, I would recommend to research Linux and HAM-radio. You might find that these two go well together and can provide a surprise.

Internet is a matter of access and speed. How that is done, is a different question. The more we move from autarkism (decentralized) into centralized systems, the more increased our dependence on the decisions of others will be.

Besides, internet is a service that is hardly something relevant to the core of human-life.

one addition: Technically this all could run on 12 or 24 volts ....

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– TheGreyMouse 2 points 4 years ago +2 / -0

Now I'm going to have to go and look for that Linux/HAM-Radio surprise. Help me before I go on a wild goose chase.

Definitely agree that we need to use decentralized systems. There used to be a phone app that used bluetooth or personal hot spot to communicate without the telco network. I think there are other apps that do it as well.

You're right. Internet isn't actually a core requirement, but it would be nice to have comms.

Your retardation and emotional abusiveness shines through. If you had used reason you would have noticed that the question is: how to discover the IP address of current sites.

By knowing both the IP and the DNS-name of the site, you can built your own host-file. All then one would have to do, is to command your browser to listen to the hostfile-DNS-resolution.

And even worse: Those who upvoted you are simply of your level of retardation minus 1.

This is thinly veiled as free speech, but just the fact that you can type, doe not mean you have wisdom to share.

;; ANSWER SECTION:

greatawakening.win. 2138 IN A 172.67.145.123

greatawakening.win. 2138 IN A 104.21.71.144

Any basic tutorial on how to look up addresses with nslookup, dig, or the equivalent tool via a webpage makes it easy to get addresses. The above is the 2nd address that is currently valid for ga.w besides the one you just posted - 104.21.71.144

Also, with regard to DNS attacks and domain seizures, there used to be backup domains for these sites.. I dont know if they are still valid and working and available for other .wins or if they are now retired or obsolete.

thedonald.win used to be additionally available via:

  • thedonald.xyz
  • thedonald.one
  • thedonald.space

These were set up before the patriots.win / thedonald.win DNS ownership hostilities, so maybe a similar thing was never setup for p.w.

Edit - auth.win also has a pair of IPs as well. Both of these are:

104.21.87.229 authentication.win

172.67.147.205 authentication.win

If the internet is down how does this work?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 19 ▼
– LiquidRitz 19 points 4 years ago +19 / -0

DNS is like have a Contact List. It's a service that saves all of your friends phone numbers to convenient names. So you can type in their name to find them instead of memorizing their phone number.

If you know your friends phone number you wouldn't need the contact list service.

That's how this works except the Contact List saves website names (like neopets.com) with IP Addresses (instead of phone numbers).

If they go down due to dns server then yes. Basically the network is still up but you can't connect through normal means without the IP address.

– pepewarrior0102 [S] 10 points 4 years ago +10 / -0

We think that their 'internet shutdown' will be a soft shutdown, only in the form of shutting down some of their DNS servers, sort of like ripping up a phonebook. People would type in google.com but there'd be no phonebook to get the correct IP address for that domain. This trick is like making your own phonebook.

For them to ACTUALLY FULLY take down the internet would be unfeasible according to what I've heard.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 4 ▼
– Choctaw 4 points 4 years ago +4 / -0

Correct, it's much easier to bring the internet down than people think. Some BGP routers disabled, coupled with a few select fiber lines and that would be that.

And back on the topic, DNS isn't the "internet", generally speaking, it's a tool to help humans -- it simply maps human readable names to IP addresses, yes some of us know there is more, but that is it's purpose in a nutshell. The internet and internal networks do not require DNS to function, it's all about the IP packets(TCP and UDP), a connection method(wire, fiber, radio wave) and some hardware addressing.

As with anything posted on this site, don't take everything here as gospel, do yourselves a little favor and engage in some reading up on the networking topic or watch a video. Even if you aren't a crusty old engineer, the high level view is pretty fascinating on how it all works, and the origination of why there is even an Internet today. Also read up on the history of unix/BSD/solaris/linux, and you will get a pretty decent idea of how your OS works, even shitty windows.

PS IPX/SPX sucks.

▲ 5 ▼
– Aspie 5 points 4 years ago +5 / -0

Also, the WWW isn't the "internet" either. There's also FTP, Telnet, Gopher, Ping, Finger, and more. Also, there are still a number of old-time BBS systems still working via dialup. US Robotics still makes modems, but they are USB dongles now. You can get one for less than $40. But you'll need to research the BBS numbers now before the info is gone.

I was on the internet before the WWW. There's nothing like using telnet to run software on a computer physically located halfway around the world, or using finger to see how many Cokes are in the drink machine in a physics building at some university in another state.

Type the IP for GAW in the URL bar and see:-

Edit:- Maybe it will work with an edited hosts file but I have not tested it.

IF DNS goes down I am hoping Yandex DNS is up:- 77.88.8.8, 77.88.8.1

I have also archived locally many small, obscure DNS services.

The issue with Cloudflare is that they use the same IP address for multiple websites, so the request must also contain a header telling Cloudflare which website you want to see.

If Cloudflare was actually down as well, I don't know where the IP number would go to.

Your connection to the Internet is up, but servers on the Internet which allow you to find the greatawakening.win server at address 63.21.56.102 (for example) are down, so you have this local static mapping (which is included on all machines) that tells your system what the IP addresses are for specific domains. Every system checks this file before sending a request to a DNS server, so if the DNS servers are down this will allow you to still connect to some important sites.

They can't take out the whole Internet which consists of a physical infrastructure and nodes residing on that infrastructure. However, everyone needs DNS because they can't remember IP addresses, and DNS is sort of a weak point in the whole Internet architecture because it has no security and everything relies on it, plus most of the public servers are in the hands of corporate entities. If they simply deleted the entry for greatawakening.win from the server that originally hosts the DNS then nobody could reach the site without an IP address.

Que? Yeah all those addresses are owned by CF, thats the DDOS service they provide that proxies connections through to the actual servers that run here and p.w, that have their own addresses that are never seen by us.

But I can surely browse to the cloudflare IPs right now - and have done so by posting this reply.

If you are using Windows, you edit the file C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts and add these lines:

172.67.145.123 greatawakening.win # Also 104.21.71.144

104.21.87.229 authentication.win # Also 172.67.147.205

45.89.97.6 wwww.naturalnews.com

What you should do is put them in now, but insert a # at the front which will disable it. Then if DNS goes down, you just have to delete the # character and you're good to go.

You're right about that, but missed the bit about a hosts file.

/etc/hosts on OSX allows you to manually define a mapping between a domain name and an IP.

For example, an entry like 172.67.145.123 greatawakening.win will effectively bypass DNS resolution and just trust that you know the IP.

it hurts the brain doesn't it.

It would make sense if they would put this site on tor, then it should all be good since entrypoint servers are generally ip based and all needed then is the onion route.

of course... if they can take down DNS, they can take down everything else related, like umm.... the handful of backbone routers that actually route traffic via IP can just be shut off, or even whitelist only specific critical infrastructure, meaning 100% blackout for everything not on the whitelist.

Very interesting. Looks like it might be too data intensive for the average person; particularly if you want to keep updated with domain changes. Although most of the sites we visit probably don't change often enough to matter.

Considering the average person doesn't visit many sites on a regular basis it probably makes more sense to keep track of domain-IP pairs manually for your regular/most important sites like the qagg post you mentioned.

It is probably far more feasible to set up your own DNS server as a caching server, and manually set the cache expiration time on records to be max limit (which I think is 30 days for linux servers like BIND). Then just surf like normal so the cache builds up records.

In a case where the internet has gone down globally for any length of time, we'll probably have more important things to worry about if it's not back functioning normally within a few days.

Nope. But I remember playing outside, because I grew up like that.

I wouldn’t even give half a fucking shit about the goddamn Internet or anything related to it if it turns out everything went dark because we were getting the job done. I’d give it up forever if it meant we were getting the job done.

I won't need to go online if it goes "dank."

I have plenty of hard cover books to read and/or reread. I have a huge liberty library and a bible.

Yeah, that'd be great. Probably what they're using it for, actually.

Realize if the DNS structure fails that mean the power grid drops as well because somewhere in that mess of computer infrastructure there are critical DNS entries that are needed.

Debating buying a satellite phone w my first pay tomorrow on the FT job. But maybe just some food. Some smoke. I've got an attic full of books. Dad and I both worked in book manufacturing before slick willy enacted NAFTA.

Auto reply to common replies

"GET OUT WITH BOOKS BY THE FIRE"

Great idea. I also want news.

"THIS WONT WORK DUE TO CLOUDFLARE"

For some sites it will.

"THEY WILL DO MORE THAN SHUT DOWN DNS"

This is not an end-all solution. As a backup, listen to the Emergency Broadcast System as referenced in drop 1.

"UR A SHILL"

.. What?

Does anyone know the host address for GreatAwakening or Patriots?

Update: Ignore what I said about cloudflare. GAW should work. According to sillbag, who wrote the tutorial that inspired this one,

Cloudflare blocks browsing directly by IP address

adding it to your hosts file allows you to browse with hostname and thus it will go through.

See my 2nd comment for GAW. (As mentioned, these might not work due to Cloudflare. Currently messaged the mods to inquire more)

For patriots.win I got:

104.21.65.162 patriots.win

172.67.147.39 patriots.win

I'm going to assume you can add both since the QAGG file does that.

I don't think there will actually be 10 full days of internet darkness. It would be so catastrophic that it would take years to recover from even just 10 days.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Everyone needs to read up on editing your hosts file. This is what computers used before DNS. Read this:

https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/27350/beginner-geek-how-to-edit-your-hosts-file/

Now go find out all the IP numbers for all your favorite websites and add to your hosts file.

There are also a good number of old BBS systems still operating via dialup. You can get a USB modem dongle for less than $40. Make sure you have good surge protection. I lost a computer to a distant lightning strike years ago. I heard thunder in the distance, and before I could unplug the computer, everything but the monitor was fried.

You can also save entire websites using HTTrack software. You can save single pages with your browser or print them to PDF files. Back in the 90s, I printed out reams of stuff that no longer exists on the internet. I had an HP DeskJet printer, and I could refill the cartridge with fountain pen ink at 75 cents a shot. Cheap.

Guess it's time to create a backup hosts file incase shit hits the fan. Including search engines like metacrawler will be key.

Honestly even if they took down ICANN it's not going to take down dns servers or routing relays. I'm sure all the ISPs have their stuff backed up and cached incase of emergencies. ICANN is more about validating dns' not hosting, DNS brokers can function without it.

The only real way to take down the internet is to either shut down the power grid or shut down all the ISPs. Of course if all the big ISPs are in on it they can certainly try -- or if the good guys need to work with the ISPs to shut down the internet it's certainly possible.

But nothing short of a solar flare or total loss of power is going to bring down the net.

Unless all dial-up, isdn, and satellites are taken offline we would still have old school stuff like bbs. It would just be the wild west of the internet again.

I do recall hearing something about Obama installing a kill switch on the entire internet. However, that is outside the scope of this tutorial; this just (attempts) to get some websites in the event of a soft shutdown.

Only the first 3 or so will definitely work, the rest probably wont due to Cloudflare. This not being the "end all" solution, a good backup would be to consult the Emergency Broadcast System as referenced in drop 1.
