Student debt held by graduate students is likely to be a mixture of graduate and undergraduate debt, sine you need an undergraduate degree to get a graduate degree. The quoted stat is less specific than the Gov's reporting of it. Could be the gov misunderstood or misremembered the stat.

What you’re saying about some of the debt being from undergrad however, many employers were using tuition reimbursement as a recruitment tool with a grad degree. I worked 8n the nursing field for 40 yrs and had a bachelors degree, I watched many of my co-workers move on to Nurse Practitioners and I know what my hospital offered to recruit them for employment after graduation. Many of the newer hires had all of their tuition paid after 1 yr of employment, saw this with doctors, too. These are the higher middle class wage earners, too. But for goodness sakes, let’s pay off their student loans & let the rest pay their own. What about my hard working kids that, like myself, paid off our own student loans?
