"The time it takes to charge an electric car can be as little as 30 minutes or more than 12 hours. This depends on the size of the battery and the speed of the charging point."

DC fast charging is always spendy, and their use should be the exception rather than the rule.

A better comparison would be what you pay to charge at home.

permalink save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– shartblaster 2 points 2 years ago +2 / -0

Correct. It still costs me just ~$8.00 to fully charge my Tesla from 0-100% (300+ miles) at home. Superchargers are more expensive, but I only do one or two road trips a year where i would use those. Electric cars aren't for everyone, but they're not exclusively for hippies.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– Cpleb 1 point 2 years ago +1 / -0

Does the 300 miles really translate to 300 actual miles? 90%? Serious question

Just a 30 second internet search

8 years or 150K miles warranty https://www.tesla.com/support/vehicle-warranty

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– DJT4MoreYears 2 points 2 years ago +2 / -0

..and just 35 seconds of the internet search..

"These warranties cover the repair or replacement necessary to correct defects in the materials or workmanship of any parts manufactured or supplied by Tesla, which occur under normal use."

Doesn't covers the wearing down of the batteries..only DEFECTS in the batteries.

I've already heard stories of people needing to pay out of their own pocket to replace worn down batteries after only 4 or 5 years.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– Hodar 1 point 2 years ago +1 / -0

True. How old were the cars? The warranty is for current production cars. Battery tech is constantly improving. The Lithium Sulfate tech will likely move the bar much higher

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– DJT4MoreYears 1 point 2 years ago +1 / -0

Not sure exactly..but if they had to replace their batteries after 5 years..and this was a year ago or so...hmm..let me see...carry the 1....um..about 6 years ago. Of course battery tech is always improving but we're talking about now..not 10 years down the line.

Also, the old batteries are filling our landfills with toxic chemicals. There's only 5 battery recycling plants nationwide.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– Hodar 1 point 2 years ago +1 / -0

EV batteries are classified as hazardous waste. So "legally" they should not be found in any landfill. The batteries are stored and inventoried. That is how we are getting our feedstock.

The battery contains either Lithium Carbonate or Lithium Peroxide which is ~$70K/mton, Nickle which is selling for $25K/ton, Manganese, Stainless Steel - depending upon the age of the battery, it may have Cobalt which is running $80k/mton

That's a lot of money to be throwing away - that's why there are battery recycling companies coming online this year, and next.

▲ 1 ▼
– Greekish 1 point 2 years ago +1 / -0

Note, too, that the price of Lithium is rocketing.

– NanoKhuma 1 point 2 years ago +1 / -0

And in the pdf there's a million and one reasons they can deny a warranty claim, and the arbitration clause means you can't sue Tesla for noncompliance.

Reasons that can void your warranty: •Not updating the software on the vehicle •Having your car towed •Having any work done by a non-authorized dealership •Damage from non-Tesla chargers •Damage from Tesla chargers bought after the car's purchase •Not having work done in a timely manner

And lastly, the warranty claim only entitles you to a remanufactured battery that meets the minimum warrantied specifications appropriate for the age and wear of the vehicle. Kind of a shit deal IMO.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– Hodar 1 point 2 years ago +1 / -0

And a ICE car warranty differs? Reliability wise, the EV has a fraction of the moving parts. MTBF is far higher on the EV (approaching 1 million miles on average)

Virtually no maintenance. Tire rotation (probably shorter tire life due to EV greater weight). But overall lower cost of ownership.

Are they perfect for everyone and everywhere? No. Absolutely not. But they are improving

In NY they can install fast chargers in your house for 3000$

permalink save report block reply
▲ 3 ▼
– Cpleb 3 points 2 years ago +3 / -0

Lol at $5 a gallon you still have to get 600 gallons of gas for free before you’re out ahead. Let’s say you fill up a 20 gallon gas tank once a week that’s still 30 weeks, more than half a year before you come out ahead of the petrol car. Assuming it doesn’t cost you electricity to charge.

FYI that charger can void your battery on your car. You have to use a Tesla branded charger in order to keep it.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– Hodar 1 point 2 years ago +1 / -0

Not true. It’s a charger. You can use Tesla Supercharger, or independent charge station.

https://evadept.com/how-to-charge-tesla-at-non-tesla-public-charging-stations-using-adapters/

Or buy a Tesla home charge port for $479 https://www.amazon.com/Tesla-Motors-Cable-Wall-Connector/dp/B01HYBZG0Q/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=Tesla+charger&qid=1664241707&sr=8-3

Or a compatible (and probably less reliable) Lectron for $100 less

https://www.amazon.com/Lectron-Level-Portable-Charger-Charging/dp/B0B5DRM64Q/ref=mp_s_a_1_4?keywords=Tesla+charger&qid=1664241707&sr=8-4

Or purchase an adapter that converts the more standard plug to the Tesla proprietary plug

I would like to clarify that I meant "battery warranty", I seem to have left off the word warranty.

However, it does run the risk of voiding your battery warranty, From Tesla's New Vehicle Limited Warranty, page 10, "Non-genuine Tesla parts or accessories or their installation, or any damage directly or indirectly caused by, due to, or resulting from, the installation or use of non-genuine Tesla parts or accessories"

Unless the news, Car and Driver, Kelly Blue Book, Forbes and a host of others; not including those who own an EV are all lying. The amount of energy in a gallon of gas can be precisely determined. The amount of energy in a battery can also be precisely determined.

Wild accusations without data, are little more than wild accusations.
