It’s 9pm eastern. Normally at this time on a weekday, there’s relatively light traffic. Yesterday and today, it’s been double, triple or more. It started yesterday. I see a pattern. There are sentry helicopter pairs flying randomly around many major east coast bases and waterways. Many many more helicopters up right now than the last year. It’s fucking hectic out there right now. And it shouldn’t be. Pretty sure there’s a carrier down off Florida. I tracked mail birds leaving and then disappearing off shore. Only one place they could be going.
Something has changed with the start of Durham trial. I check this website several times a day since 2019. Every day. I am ex military as well, I know when something is unusual. This is unusual. Very.
We have entered a new phase of whatever is happening. This is a fucking shitload of aircfraft and helos at 2100 on a Wednesday.
Hard to say. When the real spooky stuff starts, I expect we won’t see anything. It could be a general DEFCON thing, heightened security based on perceived threat. Or it could be last minute shuffling of assets.
I’m most curious about all the choppers I was looking at. As I traveled down the eastern seaboard, I kept seeing pairs of helos. Blackhawk, Apache, dolphins, not traveling in a straight line. They were all just roaming around, usually near a city or military base. So not training birds, not moving them, but pulling security with them.
It’s just so unusual. I’m gonna check at 3 am when the map should be dead quiet and see if all the helos and intel birds are still up.

Reports of lots of military aircraft that looked like military transports moving in south-central Indiana last week per family relations. Unusually large number and frequency. Unknown military base origin.

In my experience it's towards the end of the fiscal year that they try to burn up money. Reason being if they have any left in the pot it supposedly gets subtracted from next year's budget. Source: former DoD employee.
100%. October is typically what we call “recovery” time … inventory, clean and repair equipment. Yes, new FY means new money. It also means that new money needs to be budgeted before it gets spent. That takes time.
Agree here to a point. Former navy ATC and in my experience there was a big decline right before the budget passed and as soon as they got funds aircraft sorties would be up big. Can’t remember what that time frame was for the new fiscal year besides fall.
New fiscal year starts 1 October and ends 30 Sep.

Yeah, but we're under a CR, which means we only get the same amount of OMN as last year, until the DoD budget is passed and signed. Doesn't affect NAF, RDT&E, etc. So anything covered under OMN usually doesn't have a larger execution amount until the PB and NDAA are signed.

I have been watching the skies for a while and live rather close to a secret, not that secret, base. There has been a lot of activity and I can tell you this, not all of the choppers or planes are using their transponders. Just the day before yesterday 2 choppers went over my house and neither showed up online so I know their transponders were off. But yes a lot of unusual activities.

At this time last week there would be 30 nationwide.
It's not just aircraft. I've watched a LOT of military equipment, tanks and bobcat looking things among other stuff, moving on the train rails behind my house. I've lived here for 12 years and have never seen that before.
The military equipment rail traffic is up 1000x percent. I've seen tanks and transports going one way in desert pink (yes pink) then coming back with a fresh coat of olive green a week later. They're repainting everything even the military base by me the equipment that was all desert colors is now green. I haven't seen that since the 80's.

Beginning of fiscal year. Happened last year at this time too, and every year prior to that. The units are flush with money, and they like to get out there and train as much as possible. When I was in, we always did major training in October and Feb/Mar. In April and May of 1988, we went to Team Spirit in Korea. Prior to that we went to Hawaii to interface with the 25ID to proof out the light attack concept.

I'm probably about 25 minutes outside of Dulles by air and I've been hearing a tremendous number of aircraft for weeks now - much more than normal. Sometimes it's just constant - one plane fades out and another in, one right after another for long periods. That's how it was yesterday. Today, haven't heard a thing. There are no military bases anywhere near here. Quantico would be the closest and that would be about 85 miles away by road.

I just checked … Its now 11:45EST. there are a whole lot of refuelers up right now all alone KEK … for those that don't know, those tankers are not flying around doing nothing at 11:45 at night. They are PROBABLY up there to keep fast movers (fighter jets) or spoopy birds (stealth) aloft through the night.
I see f22s screeming up the coast a lot now. Live near Wilmington ,NC. Helicopters every night.

That’s a load of crap. The only units that run out of money are the ones that don’t matter. In my entire career not a single time did we have to wait until October to do something.
And this isn’t training sorties. It’s not a bunch of flight students in training aircraft. You can tell by looking at them. I’m seeing intel birds and sentry duty helicopters just loitering. No touch and goes for landing practice. No training aircraft. I don’t buy the money excuse.
How many people are in an intel bird? Think they train? You're free to your opinion. Monkeyworks mentioned this possibility, so I'm not making it up. I don't run the schedule for these so it's all speculation.
A Boeing Pegasus was being trailed by a Globemaster over northern Pennsylvania
I reside in the Midwest. A Mil chopper flew over our house several times between 5-6 this evening. They were flyng very low and ADS-B showed they were 3 separate AC, not just one doing the rounds 3 times.
Definitely not routine here, although we do see our fair share of med evacs. Their paths were all different, 2 were just circling the general area.

I had 2 military cargo planes fly about 100 ft over my treeline and I live in a rural area with no airport nearby
