Red is also the color of blood.
It might be their last ditch effort to get themselves back in control. A desperate move for things to go back to how they were and feel " like home". I would imagine something traumatizing like a bomb or attack of some kind.

I just recently learned that there was an actor suicide on the set of this movie. He was one of the dwarf actors and he hung himself. Supposedly you can see him through one of the screens in the movie. Haven’t checked myself. Could it be related to any of this?

In the original Wizard of OZ the ruby slippers were Silver. Perhaps the strange allusion is actually referring to the rigging of the global silver markets and subsequent suppression of the price of silver.
