Aussie here, Victoria / nsw border. I can confirm Optus is down, many banks / markets / ATM based type of operations.

Melbourne trains are out.

Although someone in the w.a state (West Coast of oz) claims not affected by Optus.

Weird peeps online are making claims that they can still access Facebook and tiktok but not anything else. I can't confirm any of that, my family and neighbors who have Optus are down both phone and Internet including their f.b etc

Know anyone with a landline (in the US when power was out, landlines still workedl).

As a kid those were our got to flashlights until we could find the battery operated ones in the drawer.

The joys Gen Z will never know.

Do you still have the copper wire phone network in the US, that still works in a black out?

In most of Australia the landline phones are via the internet cable except for remote rural areas that still have the copper wire network.

No electric power no landline phone, mobile phone only.

Of cause the Government and phone companies don't see a problem with this. They just say in a blackout, use your mobile phone.

Why would you have a fixed internet phone you can't depend on?

Now if you're old and can't use a mobile phone or you live in an area with unreliable mobile phone reception, then you are stuffed!

Landlines in our area work until the batteries along the line fade and go flat. Then out till power is restored and batts recharge.

About 10 years ago one of my old mentors strongly recommended to anyone who was able to pay the extra fees to buy an old land line before they were lost.

Many rural areas near me still have old copper landline access. Cities want to upgrade for sure, though the difference is buying phone via satellite, cable/net provider, or choosing the old school phone company.

It may not be available everywhere.

If you can access the copper network, they are usually more reliable in emergencies.

This new tech via internet, either mobile or broadband, the Authorities can switch it off when they see fit.

Then it's radios and the fun of copping with jamming.

Yes much (if not most) of the US still has copper lines if they even have a landline. I don't expect that to last much longer with more areas getting fiber lines for cable/internet. My last house had phone jacks with copper to the telco but my current house has no phone line. I think they will die out with the boomers - everyone else just uses mobile phones now unless they get phone service through their cable company or (a small minority) VOIP providers.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– Dirty30 1 point 2 years ago +1 / -0

Thanks for that information, fren.

The copper wire network is good in an emergency, like a power failure.

It appears most developed countries are going over to the fibre network now.

What good is a landline when everybody else has mobile? Who ya gonna call

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– dec3169 1 point 2 years ago +1 / -0

There are still a ton of fax machines, and they don't work as well over VOIP as they do over a landline.

The other few that have landlines. It keeps makeshift local communication centers open at least. Hope we never need to get to this point, though if family or friends choose to pay for this emergency backup, you can stay in touch with them.

Don't forget you needed one of those 20 foot curly phone cords to reach far enough to get to the drawer. Of course once you got the flashlight the kid(s) had to untangle the phone cord.

The incident is an excellent warning about transitioning to a cashless society.

Dire warning for Australia about cashless future after Optus outage exposed major problem with going digital

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12722427/Aussies-argue-Optus-outage-proves-Australia-shouldnt-completely-cashless.html

But I think what happened is that the CEO of this company is 100% a diveristy hire.

Ms Kelly Bayer Rosmarin.

Mother-of two Ms Rosmarin, 46, landed the top (CEO) job in April 2020 after a year as deputy CEO despite no telecommunication experience during her 14 years with Commonwealth Bank.

She was parachuted onto the Football Australia board after serving as then-chairman Sir Frank Lowy's personal banker, and soared through the ranks of the CBA.

She took over Optus just as the Covid pandemic began but faced the biggest crisis the company had ever suffered when a massive data hack a year ago stole and exposed personal details of up to 10 million customers.

The furious backlash to the data leak saw analysts, customers and commentators demand her sacking at the time but she managed to survive the outrage.

In the wake of the 2022 data hack, she dismissed calls for stiffer European-style penalties for companies who fail to protect their customer's personal details.

'Look, honestly I'm not sure what penalties benefit anybody,' she said at the time.

What better way to raise awareness about the dangers of going digital than well-placed outages etc.

Hmmm....
