There's an illegal at my buddy's shop who is the foreman there. He's been in the US illegally for 16 years. He's a hard worker, but he's illiterate in Spanish AND English! Dude can't read or write in his mother tongue and hasn't bothered to learn and he just barely speaks English.
Why you might ask? Well, some of it is cultural, but he also hasn't been forced to learn when he has entire sections of town that speak Spanish only and has Spanish radio and TV on tap.
I've lived and worked all over the world and as a sign of respect, I start trying to learn the local language as soon as I arrive (if not before). Even if I'm on vacation, I attempt to learn some basic conversational language.
The guy in my example isn't alone though. There are millions more like him that have been on welfare since arriving illegally day one. They don't respect our culture, they don't respect our nation, and all they're here to do is leech as much as they possibly can as quickly as they can. These people DGAF about laws and as soon as the welfare runs out, they'll be the first to come to your house and steal directly from you instead of using the federal government as an intermediary.
These people can't drive for shit, their neighborhoods are nasty just like their countries of origin, and they couldn't care less about America or American citizens. The vast majority of them bring little to no value to our country and produce generations of dead weight. We have a bad enough jogger problem as it is. The leeches have got to go!
Nobody has to die, but they absolutely can't be allowed to stay here! We need to deal with the most recent illegal invaders first and then start seriously considering a "Liberia" solution for the rest of the dead weight in places like Baltimore, DC, Atlanta, Chicago, Detroit, Memphis, New Orleans, and Oakland just to name a few.

It could be argued that speaking Spanish is more important than speaking English for construction / labor jobs here in Texas. It sounds cold, but I say speak English or leave.
That's a good point I hadn't considered against my free market argument. Though, those folks who can speak both and have capital have access to cheaper (albeit illegal) labor, so it could cut both ways.
I guess don't know what folks will think having an 'Official Language' will accomplish in a practical sense. Over 40% of states have english as their official language, Texas (my home state) surprisingly doesn't.

About 20 years ago I needed to study to take the written exam to renew my commercial driver license. If you have a HazMat endorsement you must do the entire written portion each time your license is renewed.
I went to a DMV in So Cal and asked for a Commercial Driver's Handbook so I could brush up on regs for the test.
The lady behind the counter could not find a handbook in English. She even went into the back to search for one and came up empty. She asked if there was any other language I could use to study with and I told her No.

Let's take that a step further and tax all remittances. The amount of treasure leaving our country is insane and the people sending it are already on a free ride. They don't pay taxes, their kids go to school for "free" and get "free" breakfast and lunch, they get "free" groceries, they get "free" healthcare, and they don't pay for the roads they drive on in their uninsured clunkers, or for the police and fire services.
We need to tax the shit out of the money leaving the country. Better yet, target the problem countries who are sending their worst and then enforce little to no tax on the "good" (primarily European) countries.
I must disagree. Once earned---and taxes paid---one's money should not be taxed further, for any reason. All the problems you cited (freeloading, etc.) can be addressed directly.
I have a personal stake. I am a U.S. citizen born and raised, a lifelong employed person, and now retired. But I have family members in Zambia who need financial support (the economy of Zambia is not the healthiest). It's my money that I have earned honestly and paid taxes on, and I have a right to use it as I desire. It is no different from purchasing any foreign good or service: money outflow to people who will accept it for trade. My own bank is now monitoring my ATM withdrawals to prevent me from withdrawing any sum that it deems "unusual." Western Union requires their wire transfer agents to periodically inquire as to the purpose of my transfers (cautious of money laundering). Frankly, my emotional reaction to all this is to tell them to fuck themselves with a sharpened rowel spur, but I don't say anything.
Certain qualifying conditions may justify such a measure (e.g., remittance disallowal or limitation on those who are legally on the dole), but do not toy with making it universal, or we will erode our own liberty out of a desire to punish malefactors. Did not the Patriot Act teach us anything?
Perhaps I should have clarified my position further. I was speaking to the general topic of illegals who don't pay any taxes, gaming the system and living on the dole while sending remittances home.
I don't really care what citizens do with their money. If you're here legally and have paid taxes on your earnings do what you want with it. Although, I'm not a fan of the income tax system, but that's an entirely different topic.

I speak English, Norwegian, Russian, Arabic, and Korean either fluently or conversationally and have a gift for linguistics, but I absolutely refuse to actively learn Spanish.
I don't allow a word of it in my house and the only Spanish I know is what I've picked up passively which I then use to eavesdrop of the Spanish speakers who are constantly talking shit about the rest of us.
When someone asks me if I "habla", I tell them "absolutely not, learn English".

Thank you! It's not as difficult as one might think, especially when you're living and working in a foreign country and have almost total immersion.
Bottom line, it's about respect and communicating with local populations in their language. If you're going to live in their "house" you need to learn their language. I don't expect people to speak English to me when I'm in their country unless I'm in the hinterlands of Scotland and/or Ireland and everyone is speaking Gaelic!

Things like construction, landscaping, restaurants, and house cleaners will most likely cost a good bit more, but we should even out because of the money saved that would be spent on them.
