LOL! I do some beekeeping and I cracked up laughing at your term 'asthmatic bee', I could visualize and hear it in my mind, too funny, thanks for that M42D.
Took my wife into work today for safety sakes. It’s -45 this morning.
Saw a fellow sitting in his EV at a charging station. The businesses were still closed for him to stay warm and dawdle while his car charged.
I briefly spoke with him as he went into the store. He said he’s been sitting in the car running the heaters and it was taking about twice as long to charge. The car’s range was about 280km in the cold he said.
The fellow said his trip to Saskatoon from Kelowna takes about 3 times longer for charging time (sitting time).
His charges today were about $100 and two hours of sitting with heaters on and the battery was only 2/3 charged.
He said he liked his EV, but only in summer. But he said only if it’s not too hot, AC drains batteries very fast.
So, if you live in Canada, and are considering buying an EV, make sure your pockets are deep and you’re NEVER on a schedule. I wished him luck. His name was Jack (John) from Kelowna.
That $100 only bought him 172 miles of range. That would get him down to Calgary, where he could charge it again, but I’m not sure what happens after that. Heading west into the Rocky Mountains and he’s got a 6 hour drive to Kelowna. Fuel stations are pretty sparse, and I can’t imagine the rapid charger situation is very robust. His adventure is just starting.
It is about 200 miles between Mandan and Fargo North Dakota. That is about four hours of travel along I-94 in perfect weather. It is also double the distance between Mandan, ND and Billiings, MT which takes about 8 hours of driving. With his EV and a very cold day, I am not sure he even made it to Calgary before having to charge his car. Remember that the tweet said he had the heater running while charging.
I am in Edmonton where that post is from. Last night we got an Emergency text warning that the power grid is dangerously low and to turn off lights, unneccesary electronics, unplug block heaters from our vehicles and not to charge electric vehicles.
My Brain dead 1st son is up there with his CAnook wife. I hear the "Health care is great" malarky all the time. Let's see what he says when Truedoooo forces him into an EV. its -12 up there in Winne peg now.
My wife is from Canada. When her sisters children were born she had to bring her own diapers and formula to the hospital.
I have a condo in South Daytona. It is full of older Canadians we call snowbirds. They come down there in October and November and stay until spring. They all schedule any procedures they may need for their time in Florida and pay out of pocket. When I asked why, they tell me that the waiting list is so long to get these done in Canada that they would probably die before its their turn. And thats just the procedures that get approved. Many are denied outright. Death panels and such.
I lived in Port Orange and was practically outraged at how that area became the hotspot for canadian weather refuge. Then I stayed next to some old jerk from Canada...yea fuck all that
I like to go outside when it’s 50 degrees without a coat. This is usually when my body has adjusted to the cold and it’s suddenly no longer -20 degrees on a daily basis. It’s very normal to have two months of summer and the rest of the year some form of winter. Your body does change the fat types to account for cold and it won’t feel as cold once adjusted. With kids it’s not a great idea to be outside for long when it’s near 0 degrees. We can’t play in the snow if we don’t go outside when it’s below 32 degrees :)
“He said he liked his EV, but only in summer. But he said only if it’s not too hot, AC drains batteries very fast.” So the months of May, part of June, September and part of October he can use his vehicle. The rest he hates using it because it’s too hot or cold. What individual would still say they liked an item they can only use four months out of the year and paid tens of thousands?
Even some major US highways like the PA turnpike can get downright dangerous in cold weather. We hear frequent stories of people stranded for up to 24 hours on the turnpike during storms or accidents. 49F below is downright deadly if your car heater stops working. In that kind of weather, how long would it take to freeze to death? 15 minutes? You would have to be insane to trust your life to an EV in that situation.
That's why they say we need to carry a winter survival kit. It doesn't matter what highway you are on anywhere in this country. If winter weather hits and something happens to you, you are in deep trouble.
There are negative numbers in a good portion of the northern US at the moment, as well. Wonder how the EVs are doing in say, MN where it’s -11 and KS is -9?
EVs only make sense for a very specific and small subset of the population, for specific uses. EVs have lots of issues:
EVs are not as affordable as normal cars
Their range is smaller than normal cars
Less infrastructure is built out, so finding a charging station can be difficult
Charging is much slower than filling a gas tank (I've seen some places moving to a system of swapping out the entire battery to fill up, which would alleviate that, but this has it's own issues)
Manufacturing EVs is devasting to the environment and involves exploiting child labor in poor countries (lithium mines)
Electricity used to charge EVs primarily comes from coal, you are just outsourcing your emissions
EVs present huge issues with disposal or recycling when they reach end of life
Current power infrastructure is no where even close to being able to support mass EV adoption
Like OP points out, EVs work horribly in ultra cold environments
EVs don't have as long a lifespan as normal cars, and have exorbitant repair costs
Batteries don't last and need to be replaced (at price points where you could just buy a new normal car)
It seems the idiots, Communists, that want to force into this mode of transportation are making people freeze while trying to use their electric cars in the deep of winter, nice of them.
God does have ways of showing people how stupid they are-but the Commies won't see it, because---they have an agenda!
I got to chatting with a woman that was looking to trade in her conventional gas powered F150 for an electric truck but after mentioning the temperature issues with the evs and mentioned that my F150 is a hybrid and talking a little about it i think i talked her out of an ev. I went for it because I was weary of the ev push but wanted something reliable that had good mph and would fit the family comfortably as we drove across country. I don't lose power in the cold and it doesn't cost a fortune to get a new battery.
I think hybrid is the way to go. You can use (usually cheap) electricity for day to day driving, but convert to gas if you need more range. How are you finding it? Any drawbacks?
Gave had the truck for 2 years now, the only draw backs are the same with any conventional gas powered truck. Power and performance is all good. Mpg is fantastic as I can get 28mpg on long cross county trips and a lot of my street driving is electric (I'd say about 20%+)
lol... we had a relative making a 3 hour trip with their Tesla... it took them over 6 hours... the batteries would not hold a charge.... she could drive for around an hour and then have to stop and charge for an hour or longer.. it was only around -10 degrees... so not horribly cold... she ended up staying overnight because the car could not be trusted to get her home in the cold. maybe this cold weather is good for waking some people up! it's comical to see people try to be "green" but end up with blue fingers with a touch of white frostbite!!!
Every time I hear an EV wheezing past me in a car park like an asthmatic bee, I just think fucking twats, you'll get yours.
LOL! I do some beekeeping and I cracked up laughing at your term 'asthmatic bee', I could visualize and hear it in my mind, too funny, thanks for that M42D.
Just wrong is right!

A hundred bucks to charge the car?
Un-fuckin'-beleiveable.

It only cost me $40 to fill my ICE the other day.
My Isuzu Rodeo, fills at about $31.
My toyota Prius cost about $10.
How LONG to charge it to 100%?
You should put that in quotes otherwise people will think you're saying it.
And whats that battery gonna be like in 5 years?
It might not even last five months due to it catching on fire. Imagine if it happens inside the driver's garage.
But I'm glad I'm fully vaxxed and boosted, or this would have been a lot worse.
Underrated comment.

And yes, -41 degrees here this morning.
EVs aren't that bad. In the future, you'll get to stay home when it is -5 degrees outside.
My Brain dead 1st son is up there with his CAnook wife. I hear the "Health care is great" malarky all the time. Let's see what he says when Truedoooo forces him into an EV. its -12 up there in Winne peg now.
Health care is great? Hahahahaha

The only people who think the Canadian health care system is great are those that don't need or use it.
-49 Fahrenheit and you people live there? In California when it gets down to +40 we don't go outside.

If I could move to Florida I would. But the US only seems to want unskilled Mexicans.
Celsius.
-45°C is -49°F, he got it right.
Ah, I read it wrong. Nvm
Just got back from the grocery store. It is 8 degrees F with a 15 mph wind. Saw two guys there in shorts.

https://www.cars.com/articles/how-well-do-electric-cars-work-in-cold-weather-459914/
so don't drive it in the winter because the battery doesn't last long at all and it takes forever to charge
and don't drive it in the heat of the summer because the ac compressor drains the battery just as bad
I'm sure these things will be flying off these lots any day now
Plus electric vehicles tend to catch fire in any condition.
At least you can warm your hands as it self-immolates.
EVs only make sense for a very specific and small subset of the population, for specific uses. EVs have lots of issues:
Forgot one point: Traditional coal fired and nuclear fired power plants are being eliminated in the name of climate change.
It seems the idiots, Communists, that want to force into this mode of transportation are making people freeze while trying to use their electric cars in the deep of winter, nice of them. It just keeps getting proven EVs arent for the environment, they're status symbols

Right on thanks. Looking at the RAV4 plug-in hybrid. Probably get that for my next vehicle
Displaced Energy Vehicles. The big scam in working
