Are unions useless anymore?

Son, been saying for decades: Unions are the Mafias legal extortion racket and very little they do is ever cleanly for the worker.

If a corrupt "President" openly admits that they are a big union supporter, then you gotta ask why. Corruption feeds corruption.

When I started to work for a company, the best on earth at the time, it was said out loud, do your job and you will be here for life. Well I made it 25 years. Saw the ax come by many times and missed my head, then that one time it didn't miss.

Turns out a lot of people were involuntary separated, (that's what they called it) at around 25 years. The company evidently did not want to chance that someone might get to full retirement age. I have been pretty fortunate in that I have made more money ever year after leaving company, but it felt like a betrayal in some sense. I gave my all to the company, and the bastards just pull the rug out from under you with a seconds hesitation.

But I did a days work, and they paid me for that day, so not harm no foul, is the way I see it.

It is sad though what a great company IBM used to be, and the globalist fucked it up. There used be be a real sense of corporate citizenship, and then they started offshoring jobs. I saw the other day where the huge plant in Rochester, Mn was sold. This was a huge facility, and now it gone.

I also worked for IBM for 23 years. The boss asked at a company picnic if anyone was leaving any time soon, I told him I had about 1 more year left, and then I’d retire. Anyway, he had to cut someone and I was chosen. It was about 6 months before I wanted, but, it was ok. He was decent and let me get paid as long as he could and actually gave me days off until that date. So, never tell your boss if you intend to retire or quit ahead of time.

Good advice about not telling the boss about leaving in advance. In my case, I later noticed how my boss had worked to convince me to stay on the job for another year, only for me to be part of a mass company layoff. Not sure if he knew it was coming or not, but someone above him likely sure did.

(My) Lessons learned: Don't give them anymore notice than you have to. And if you are going to leave, be fully committed to leaving before you announce it.

I was at a company for 21 years before it folded. We had Halloween parties and some men came in drag costumes (6'3" tall Little Bo Beep! Scared me and I'm fearless!). They weren't around for the Christmas party. Times have changed.

Yes, unions are useless. They work for the betterment of big business, not the workers. The gains one makes when striking do not make up for the losses while striking, in most instances. How many of these businesses laying off workers demanded compliance with the Covid shot and no guarantees that the worker wouldn’t be laid off? So now you have health risks with zero job and zero health insurance. I say get rid of all unions.

The pay is the key. If you need a union, hire them in, pay them what their ask is and then stop paying them. None of this "the union should exist forever" nonsense.

The last 10 years temp services lie all over the United States that your job is going to go permanent when they send you in.

When you work a temp position they don't tell you your job is over until you have left the building and they call you before 6:00 p.m. to not go in the next day your temp service is over. You don't even get to say goodbye to those you worked with!

Always remember that people filter communication through themselves. Which is to say, a dishonest person will first assume dishonesty in people's communication to them, and intrinsically honest people (includes innocents and kids) will first assume honesty. One may see this as gullible or dumb, but victim blaming might therefore say more about you than it does about them.

If a promise is made that your work will transition into a permanent role, then you may make decisions that you wouldn't otherwise make in the absence of such a promise.

It's not a hard concept. But then, this is why I wouldn't trust that to begin with.

My dad work at GM my entire childhood. I worked for GM for 2 years. Out family was brand-loyal for decades, but I will say this: Fuck them. They NEED to go under. I witnessed things in that manufacturing plant that would SCARE you. They are literally the WORSE auto manufacturer in today's market. No care for employees, customers or quality- products have gotten incredibly cheaper with a shorter lifespan as they pursue woke ideals and profits.

Mary Barra is headed full steam ahead towards 100% electrification and I hope with every fiber of my being that they do it because that would almost certainly guarantee their demise.

Unions are useless. They are there to get something for union leaders or to punish a company, not for worker rights.

The union protests for more wages, benefits, etc. was met with a predictable outcome: Loss of jobs for many workers to be able to afford it for fewer.

You're forced to participate in something you may not even believe in, which puts a target on your back from management anyway.

They are. I worked under the engineering and technical union at the Boeing Company. It's formation was urged by CEO T. A. Wilson. It defends the contract under which we work and negotiates the process by which employees are rated, promoted, discharged, or laid-off.

Any corruption can be dealt with decisively by the members...if they are so inclined. It was ruled for over a decade by a despotic Executive Director (a hired hand) who essentially bribed the union leadership to give him free rein, so long as he arranged to have their union work done by paid staff and approved their unionizing travel junkets. He was widely hated by the members at large. Eventually, a group of us organized a massive internal political effort to gain control of the Board of Directors and fire him. Union politics have no equal for being vile. It took us about 6 years and several thousand dollars out of our pockets to accomplish this. His minions threatened a maneuver to reinstall him, but the word quickly trickled up from the ground troops that any such effort would be met by a massive decertification effort. The idea was dropped like a hot potato. He was gone like a used bedsheet.

But the point is: it can be done if people are determined to do it. I was greatly disappointed by members who were nominally honest and conservative, who bitterly complained about the corruption and toadying. I would ask them if they would run for Council Representative to change the governance balance. "What? Me? I don't want anything to do with it." And thus, the moaners and bitchers deserve their fates along with the sheep.

Every complaint against unions can be made against municipal governments. But do we argue, therefore, we should have no cities? What kind of union you have is determined ENTIRELY by the will and wisdom of the members. As an institution, it is a valuable aspect of freedom of association.

Whatever is wrong with Boeing is NOT the fault of the union. And cities are as necessary as agriculture, without which we would not have "civilization." My point stands: the faults are on the heads of the people, not on the nature of the institution.

I guess you imagine that civilization is possible without large-scale manufactures or transportation and that we can all get along with the town's blacksmith and Dobbin. (I love horses, but they don't deliver furniture.) Good luck with that. Cities have always been the locus for employment, when there are few alternatives.

Many corps will promise the moon to get what they want out of hires. I would have seen the Temp title and knew exactly what they planned to do with me. Do not trust that company has any good will towards you. You will always be seen as replaceable.
