SO TRUE. Just prior to living and working in China for a year a close relative who was a professor of food science ( she lectured in China frequently ) gave me the longest lecture of my life on what to eat in China. After an hour of listening to buying meat , prepping it and how to cook it , I said thats OK I think we will go vegetarian! MAN was that a mistake! 2 hours later on how to safely eat vegetables grown in human faeces ..... However in retrospect she probably saved our lives. One of us did nearly die but that was from a restaurant. It was 16 years ago but I will still not buy chinese fruit and veg, especially garlic.
Ugh - time to check the origin of the garlic in my fridge. Damn these people! How the hell do we survive when they are contaminating everything and poisoning the rest?!
I’m looking into growing it next year! Found this— Believe it or not, the U.S. is the largest importer of garlic in the world, with the majority of the garlic we consume coming from China, Mexico, and Argentina. According to the University of California, China produces a stunning 75% of the world's garlic supply, and is also the source of 75% of U.S. imported garlic.
Growing it is easy. We grow about 30 bulbs a year. Take the largest clove of each bulb in the fall when you are done harvesting your veg. garden. Plant them point side up 1-2 inches deep and 4" apart. The clove will start to get it's roots established and then it will go dormant in the winter. They are the first sprout you see in the spring. It's actually a great first sign of spring. Let them grow until the garlic scape and flower are wilted or dead. We harvest when the farmers harvest their winter wheat. Tie 4-5 of them together by the stalk and hang up in a tree or bush outside to dry them for 4-5 days. Bring them in your house cut the stem to within 2" of the bulb. Store the bulbs in a paper sack in a dark cool basement, crawl space or shed. Enjoy them all winter..
If you grow a few inside, put them in a large pot. Water it and put it in a sunny place. After a few weeks, set the pot outside and let it freeze and go dormant. The secret is to get the clove to set some roots down before it goes dormant. Enjoy you experiment.
American garlic has the roots still attached and the size of the bulbs and cloves vary
Chinese garlic is smaller more uniform in size and the roots are removed for shipping.
However, garlic is very easy to grow. That is, if you can keep the neighbor's cat from digging up the area where you planted the garlic and using it as a litter box. I did get some garlic to come up after that anyway.
There's this one too BD. It's from 8 years ago - note the inclusion in the opening graphics of the little spiky 'coronavirus' balls - conditioning much?
How is this shocking news? Poop garlic has been common knowledge for years. Look at the roots. If there aren't any it's Chinese. Garlic is so easy to grow. I live in a suburb on Long Island and my backyard is mostly raised beds. One 8x4 is completely garlic.
I love daylilies and the many deer around here were awful about decimating them. I planted one bed that was just covered in buds ready to bloom and overnight the deer ate them down to bare ground. I tried everything and nothing kept them from the daylilies, including grinding up garlic and making a spray. I went to Costco and got one of the large bags of garlic, divided the cloves and planted them all around and next to each daylily. The deer left them alone. I guess the only other thing would have been an electric fence. They stare at the chickens' electric fence but don't go near it.
Garlic and daylilies are about as easy to grow as anything. Pretty much stick them in the dirt and watch them grow. We have the worst soil on earth here, more rocks than dirt, and daylilies thrive. They also spread nicely so if you have any friends who grow them, ask them to give you some when they divide. Garlic too. Just plant the cloves right side up (pointed end) and they'll grow.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrFNifLBHjE some inspiration
Daylilies, irises and lilies (daylilies aren't actually lilies) are gifts from God. So many beautiful flowers and all easy to grow.
I had honestly never heard of this. I use Kirkland minced garlic from Costco...I just checked it and it's grown, harvested and packed in California. Thank you Costco for looking out for me when I didn't know better!!! Whew.
I think Hanlon's razor applies here. Sure, China could be nefarious and trying to sicken people in the west with their poop vegetables, but I'm fairly sure they all consume the poop vegetables themselves domestically as well. And I say vegetables because why would they stop this at garlic?
So its more about abject stupidity and the typically anti-human communist mindset where they would sicken the masses to save a couple bucks on the production of a thing. Until the wrong CCP party official eats it, gets sick, and then executes the CEOs of the industry as revenge.
Find a local farmer's market and buy strictly from there. Local ranches who actually range their cows properly will usually sell you a cow and even keep that cow on their land until it's time to slaughter. Cleaned and cut right, a cow can feed a family of four for months and will be the best meat you've ever tasted. Those same local ranches will also sell you chickens and eggs, too.
When I was young, my parents would 1/2 a cow from my cousin and her husband every year. My brother was in the military, so it was just the 3 of us, but that lasted through out the year for us.
Is there any proof that they actually grow garlic IN RAW SEWAGE, or are they using humanure as fertilizer? The outrage at this topic speaks volumes about our lack of comprehension regarding food production.
Was getting ready to search for this. We do this in the US too. I know a guy that works at a municipal water treatment plant. Yes, the solids get processed and sold to farmers as fertilizer.
I don't know about this Chyna thing, gonna look further.
It wouldn't be so bad if sewage was nothing but human waste, but unfortunately, people flush EVERYTHING, and traces of that, including many heavy metals (lead, cadmium, for example), pharmaceuticals, and everything in between, become part of the final milorganite product.
I did a brief reading about it. They "say" it is tested weekly and is clear of heavy metals and pharma. I don't think I believe that but it is their claim.
Having had many discussions with the guy in charge at the waste water plant I do know there is an EXTENSIVE process. Far more in depth than I can comprehend.
There just can't be a reliable way to extract ALL the unwanted stuff though? I support the idea of it if it's cost effective and "safe" but I just can't fathom that either of those criteria can be met. Not my field of knowledge though.
Why not just refuse to trade with China? I don't understand why the fuck we need to have people who openly have declared us as their enemies being in charge of all of our Manufacturing
Try and buy a jar of pickled cucumbers that isn't from India. That was the eye opener for me. 3 stores and nothing but Indian pickled cucumbers. I guess we don't grow and pickle cucumbers in this country anymore. Considering cucumbers are mostly water ...ain't no way I'm even trying them. Globalization sucks.
Ever bought any of that nice Milorganite fertilizer for your garden? Made in the USA, not China. Try to find in their description of how it's made that it's made from sewage sludge.
Milorganite is made right here in Milwaukee ( MILwaukee ORGanic NITrogen), but I'm pretty certain it's not used for food crops. Lawns and golf courses are the applications for Milorganite.
"Yes, Milorganite is an excellent and safe fertilizer for all plants that grow outdoors, including vegetables." From their website. I know a local garden shop sells it for all plants.
It's sold all over the state here too. My thought is it's too spendy for large scale ag use though. My wife's side of the family has several retired farmers and they only ever used straight cow manure for their fields asfaik.
Horse manure is good too. We have rabbits and their manure can be used uncomposted. You can burn plants with raw manure. You can buy bags of composted manure everywhere. I've never used Milorganite myself because of the price and I'm not gardening large acres. I like mushroom compost, also a bit pricy but I mixed it in the soil for my dahlia bed one year and the flowers exploded.
American farmers spread raw cattle waste on fields all day every day. Living in Wisconsin, I have followed more than my share of manure tankers headed to the fields. It's the circle of life thing. I think it would be safe if proper precautions are taken , but who actually knows wtf Chyna does.

I am so amazed still. Do we know who sell them here?
They sell them in Australia, hard to miss, vacuum packed from China.
Ok. I will make sure to check.
Check Walmart. For sure they used to come in little boxes with China labels. I haven’t looked for a while and rarely shop at Walmart anymore.
My question ------- WHY IN THE FUCK ARE WE BUYING GARLIC FROM CHINA?
I should.
Ugh - time to check the origin of the garlic in my fridge. Damn these people! How the hell do we survive when they are contaminating everything and poisoning the rest?!
I was just thinking now I have to buy everything from Misfit Markets.
I was thinking the local whole foods- not the chain but a local one!
Wish we could still grow it.

Oh that’s great! So did I miss my opportunity to grow it outside this year? I could start a few inside if you think that would work.

Gilroy, California known for growing garlic. They have a garlic festival every year. I sampled garlic ice cream🤪
Sounds good. I hope the California garlic tastes good. I hear the Chinese garlic tastes like shit.
American garlic has the roots still attached and the size of the bulbs and cloves vary Chinese garlic is smaller more uniform in size and the roots are removed for shipping.
How was that? I’ve had a beer float and that pretty much stinks!
It did not work at all.
That site would not let me go there.
https://archive.is/oSYVd
Thanks. I generally don't buy those.
I ask myself this question every day.
I was wondering why all the garlic switched to those little bulb 3 packs the other day. They're all produced in China!
If you are to have any luck finding other sources, it's going to be the large, loose bulbs.
However, garlic is very easy to grow. That is, if you can keep the neighbor's cat from digging up the area where you planted the garlic and using it as a litter box. I did get some garlic to come up after that anyway.
Exactly. I try, but I do NOT have a green thumb.
You won't want to watch the documentaries on the 'Sewer oil' industry in China 🤢
Damn, is that real? Give me a link.

Thanks. Appreciate it.

I saw that Coronovirus. You are right. Programmed them to the max. I have a friend who is there right now. Wondered if she is eating those darn thing.
How is this shocking news? Poop garlic has been common knowledge for years. Look at the roots. If there aren't any it's Chinese. Garlic is so easy to grow. I live in a suburb on Long Island and my backyard is mostly raised beds. One 8x4 is completely garlic.
I've heard the same about the roots.
If the garlic has roots, it is grown in the US.
No roots means it's imported because there are already regulations about no allowing rooted plants to be imported.
I think it's more that the bleach got them off - but not sure
If deer are eating your flowers, plant garlic all around them. Works to keep them away when nothing else does.
Hmm - so plant more flowers then...
I love daylilies and the many deer around here were awful about decimating them. I planted one bed that was just covered in buds ready to bloom and overnight the deer ate them down to bare ground. Sorry. I am not someone who knows anything about growing.

Thank you so much. I will do that.
Maybe I will order so they can come by Spring. Appreciate it.
There are oodles of places that sell daylilies by mail. The stores mostly carry Stella d'oro, the ones with small yellow flowers. Here's the listings for daylilies from Dave's Garden. The list is outdated so some are no longer in business but the reviews from members are helpful. (Can you tell I'm a gardening nut? LOL) https://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/advanced.php?search_text=&cat%5B158%5D=9&cat%5B157%5D=&state=xx&country=XX&sorter=company_name&submit=Search
I can tell you know what you are doing in the garden. Howls.
Can you tell I have black thumbs?
Not a bit. Old saying - you have to kill enough plants to learn to be a good gardener. It helps to start with the easy, harder to kill stuff.
Ok.
I had honestly never heard of this. I use Kirkland minced garlic from Costco...I just checked it and it's grown, harvested and packed in California. Thank you Costco for looking out for me when I didn't know better!!! Whew.
Yes, California grows lots of garlic. I used to go to where they grow them.
I think Hanlon's razor applies here. Sure, China could be nefarious and trying to sicken people in the west with their poop vegetables, but I'm fairly sure they all consume the poop vegetables themselves domestically as well. And I say vegetables because why would they stop this at garlic?

We used to grow garlic by the rows in WA.

Yes, local is best.

Don't forget some bones for the dogs.

I compost my poop and feed it to my fruit trees. It's a resource, not waste.
For many decades, there has been a fertilizer widely sold called "Milorganite", made from Milwaukie sewage sludge.
Milwaukee Organic Nitrogen I learn so much here!
It wouldn't be so bad if sewage was nothing but human waste, but unfortunately, people flush EVERYTHING, and traces of that, including many heavy metals (lead, cadmium, for example), pharmaceuticals, and everything in between, become part of the final milorganite product.

'course we don't know how to grow garlic? Just joking.

Oh. I can get pickled cucumbers locally here. I also buy local honey here. I am spoiled here in Arkansas.
I have not seen them like that but I know the elephant garlic is a little stained but white.

Plant garlic chives.
I should.
We shouldn't buy anything from China, Its all literally shit. A country where there are no morals at all. The Epitome of money is the root of all evil
I try not to do that at all.
I buy Christopher Ranch garlic from Costco. Supposedly from California. I sure hope so, even though I’m not a CA fan.
They do grow lots of garlic in CA

Sorry. I am such a dud when it comes to growing. I know they used Miracle Gro
The best garden I’ve ever had grew over our seepage bed..
Damn, you are gross. LOL
Wow. You know. Thank you.
I know also. I read about it from UK journalists who have been there. I know it's kind of bias but I have seen what they have done.
American farmers spread raw cattle waste on fields all day every day. Living in Wisconsin, I have followed more than my share of manure tankers headed to the fields. It's the circle of life thing. I think it would be safe if proper precautions are taken , but who actually knows wtf Chyna does.
I know cow manure is fine but I also understand China is very unscrupulous in what they do.
i know people who soak their veggies in bleach. buy organic
Thank you.
Tell them to switch to chlorine dioxide
My family grew lots of garlic when we were still in WA. I buy garlic from Misfits and they are all from here or MX.
