Does anyone remember when the Ten Commandments was traditionally aired on the prime-time networks every Easter? It sadly is not anymore and if you carefully listen to Cecil B. DeMille’s introduction to the film, (3:16-3:30) I think you will know why.
I have a copy of the Ten Commandments along with the original Ben-Hur and both I traditionally taken time to watch during the Easter and Passover weeks every year, and for those of you out there who are interested, Youtube, to their credit, has offered a free viewing of 1956 classic of the Ten Commandments which I wish to share with you all.
Disclaimer: The youtube link image display may make a misleading claim of the movie being age-restricted as an attempted form of censorship by way of suppressing viewership. If you see such a label, do not believe it, but instead take time to watch the film for yourself.
Yup. A family tradition in my parents and then in my own home decades ago.
Same. Warm memories fren.
Same
It was on last Saturday on ABC. Its not always on Easter. Sometimes its on Palm Sunday. Airing on Saturday does seem unusual though because typically I cant stay awake for it all. This year the wife and I watched the entire 5 hours.
The story of Moses and the Exodus is the story of Passover and if you remember correctly Jesus entered Jerusalem 5 days before Passover on what would become Palm Sunday and was Crucified the day before Passover.
Hijacking Top Comment for Free Links at this time.
Stream Ten Commandments. I am not familiar with this service
Watch Ben-Hur on Tubi:
Not hijacking at all. It's a great reply. Thanks for the links!
I Remember seeing it on TV when I was a kid. It was neat to see, but now as a believer it carries much more significance.
We watched it Saturday but I don’t remember what channel. 🙄 It may have been History or Smithsonian Channel. We were going to watch Jesus of Nazareth on Newsmax but when I saw The 10 Commandments in the guide I decided on that. I haven’t seen it in years, It was a great movie for its time and I’ve always loved Charlton Heston.
Pretty sure I can find some shows this week. I think someone does The Bible series and I’ve never watched Chosen or Passion of the Christ. I’ve heard the Passion is very graphic and I’ve had a real hard time getting myself to watch what they did to the Savior. Maybe this year. I have the DVD and never opened it. 😔😔
The Passion was well done.
I watched The Passion of the Christ in the theater. I deeply sobbed through the whole thing. I couldn't bear to watch it a 2nd time. The depths of evil are entirely too frightening for me. I choose Jesus of Nazareth as my Lord and Saviour. I recognize no other authority.
Watching The Passion is worth the pain.
It is. I watch it every Good Friday. Very hard to watch but worth every minute.
I loved the series The Chosen !
YES, I remember very well - thank you muchly fren, for sharing the link!
Also, Ben-Hur will air on TCM at 6 AM on Easter Sunday. They are also airing a lot of Biblical programming between now and Easter weekend.
Insisting, you have to pay
ben hur up legally / free (ad supported) to stream on tubitv.com u/BerlinWallCrosser
The old Jacob and Joseph movies from the 70s are actually pretty decent in their own right. Clearly old and shot on a low budget, but they did a nice job putting the stories together.
ABC just aired it last Sunday. I think they did it last weekend to coincide with Passover.
If only they would play it again on Easter. If they played it last Sunday, then maybe we are on the verge of the Great Awakening after all.
They've played it every year since the 1970s.
With one exception: for some reason, they skipped 1999.
But you have to pay to see it
Yes that and “The Greatest Story Ever Told” came on every Easter Sunday afternoon; usually after mid-morning church service times.
“The Greatest Story Ever Told” airs tomorrow night 8:00pm EST on Turner Classic Movies.
I'm old enough to remember when the [actual] ten commandments weren't considered an extremist doctrine.
Crazy that people now a days consider things like the bill of rights and ten commandments as some kind of far right extremist doctrine.
I haven’t heard them going after the Ten Commandments so much, other than that one courtroom and posting them in schools, but ahhhhhh do they get worked up at suggestions of not being promiscuous.
Yes. This and The Sound of Music played every year and I always watched both. Very fond childhood memories. The parting of the sea always left me in awe.
I remember. 3+ hour epic film.
We were at my grandparents’ home in Florida in the good old days when spring break and Easter break were the same thing.
🙋♂️ yep I miss those movies.
But the Last Supper is out; can be viewed via these services:

I’ll be watching it.
They used to play Jesus of Nazareth back then as well
It's usually on ABC the weekend before Easter FWIW
If that is so, then I am surprised and so would multitudes of others because I have heard nothing of it from any of the alphabet networks for years.
It was. I almost missed it had it not been for X. I tuned in just as Bithia was saying that she was going to Goshen.
You can watch it from the start on youtube if you want.
True but YT edits other movies on there so you know.
I found that to be the case with at least one movie I watched.
We would watch it every year.
Sad that it's not shown any longer.
It is. It was on last Saturday on ABC.
Glad it continues to be shown...i never watch network tv these days, so didn't realize this. I'll look for it next year. Thanks.
It was for Passover, but yes, I remember and used to watch it every year with my family growing up.
I saw it in the theater, in 1956.
I remember growing up with this. Thank you OP and all comments on good viewing options to celebrate Our Lord!
It's free to watch on YouTube now! There are ads, but an adblocker takes care of that ;) Have a Blessed Easter!
It leads me to the app
It was such a staple of TV broadcasting that Spielberg used it as a foil/excuse in Close Encounters to not goto to bed.
I like to watch "Ben-Hur" at Eastertime.
I just got back from a Bible study class and someone mentioned they saw it in Palm Sunday. But i don’t know what channel.
However there is an anime version at the movies called King of Kings about Jesus that is currently playing at the movies if you have children.
Yep, surely do!
It aired this past Saturday night. I nearly missed it were it not for X.
Next year, if any of the prime-time networks air the film again, we need to see what we can do to get the info out to people further ahead of time. Multitudes such as myself never knew that even aired this year.
https://vidbox.to/movie/6844 Here it is for free if you want
Thank you! Fairly painless to download.
Wow cool glad it downloaded. I had a hard time last year finding it
They tried to replace it with the John Legend advanced faggotry version
That is why I bought a copy of the 1956 classic.
Yes, every year. It’s one of the greatest movies ever made. The story, the writing, the acting, the visuals, perfect. Rare to see such a movie made now. Ben Hur is also a great one… we own them both on DVD and Fandango (Vudu) I noticed it can be rented on Prime for $3.99 or purchased there for 4.99… deal!
The Ten Commandments, the 1956 Cecil B. DeMille film starring Charlton Heston, is being broadcast on ABC on Saturday, April 12th. It will air at 7 p.m. Eastern. This marks another year of the film's traditional airing around Easter and Passover, says CNN…
If that is the case, perhaps we are on the verge of the Great Awakening after all. A shame more people didn't know about this.
relatedly, here comes peter cottontail (1971) is up on tubitv.com (legal / free / ad-supported) if anyone's looking for some fluff
Every single year it was a tradition. Not until I was in high school did I appreciate it.
Making my family watch it this year. I just got copies of both Ben Hur & Ten Commandments.
It is in fact age restricted. I cannot watch it without signing in with a Google account, nor download it so I still have it when they take it down.
They are probably saying that to suppress viewership when in fact, for those of us who have seen the film, there is really nothing to be concerned about.
They're not just saying it, they're actively preventing me from loading the video.
More YHWH worship. He likes the scent of cooking meat.
I think you're missing the point of my post.
If He liked sending people to Hell, He wouldn't have sent Jesus.
And He technically doesn't send them anyway. We choose it by rejecting His love.
As if you care. Your history shows you hate Christians.
