The usual approach is to lay off from the bottom quartile across the spectrum of seniority, to avoid demographic imbalance. This sounds like a "golden handshake" arrangement to induce the early retirement of senior personnel. I saw that at Boeing one time. It turned out to be a brain drain, and had ramifications afterward. This basically means there will be no greybeards on hand to say "Ah...I don't think you want to do this" to the remaining space cadets with their favorite brain children.
I call this scenario "Lessons Unlearned." Do not expect NASA to get to the Moon this decade (or possibly ever). The Artemis program barely has a launch vehicle and a manned capsule. There is no lander. There is no "Gateway" station, without which the rest of the architecture is worthless junk (by design). It will be interesting to see what first moves Duffy will make.

BOEING STARLINER’S FUTURE UNCERTAIN AFTER NASA STATEMENT
written by Adam Thorn | June 10, 2025
“The future of Boeing’s Starliner remains in limbo after NASA released a new statement revealing it is “still evaluating” whether its next flight would be crewed.
The news comes days after SpaceX founder Elon Musk threatened to decommission its Dragon Capsule following a row with President Donald Trump.
Currently, the US is reliant on Dragon to take its astronauts to the ISS after Starliner left two astronauts “stranded” on the space laboratory following problems with its thrusters. The mission was intended to pave the way for Starliner to become a regular alternative, but its failure sent the project back to the drawing board.”
I'm not optimistic about Starliner. When it was in development, and I was still at Boeing, my inside sources described the development environment as "amateur hour." The problems that have surfaced are uniquely absent from anyone else's man-qualified spacecraft.
Nothing like that. There were a variety of reasons for the move to Chicago. The official reason was to more centrally locate the HQ in order to reduce the time zone differences with the various company divisions. Another, unspoken, reason was to distance the new merged management from the influence of the commercial airplane division (Goodbye, Seattle). And yet another rumored reason was that Harry Stonecipher, the CEO, wanted to be located closer to his mistress in St. Louis.
The latest move to Arlington, VA was simple customer relations, being right close to the government agencies that were their military and space customers.
Illinois is bankrupt, so critically mismanaged that every government department has huge unfunded liabilities. I have no idea how that state/ city can function. They are stealing everything they can get their hands on. Basically Detroit 2.0 Democratic controlled rot and destruction.
And Boeing has been strangely silent all this while, over progress on getting Starliner back into service. I don't know what that means. Are they trying to simply bury the shame and move on? Are they discovering more design problems upon an internal review? Have they decided they need to design/develop a Mark 2 because the original design is too problem-riddled? Inquiring minds want to know!
“A bit of clarification--though I don’t think my circumstances are particularly interesting or consequential. That said, and regardless of the points below, the President is entitled to assemble the leadership team he believes will best serve his administration.
I have been relatively apolitical--a right-leaning moderate--and my political donations across both parties (though 10x more to Republicans) were disclosed in writing, with rationale, before my nomination was ever submitted to the Senate.
As for the perceived conflict--I only know Elon professionally, but having flown to space twice on SpaceX rockets, I have a firsthand appreciation for what he and his companies have accomplished. It is also worth pointing out that SpaceX remains the only way American astronauts have been able to travel to and from orbit since the Space Shuttle was retired in 2011. I hold no direct or indirect equity in SpaceX--or in any aerospace or defense company for that matter. Like all nominees, I signed an ethics letter and would have honored it.
Personally, I don’t regret anything--it was an honor to even be considered by the President. I loved DC and my brief time in the arena. The real disappointment is the time lost by Senators and staff who invested six months into a confirmation process that was ultimately withdrawn. This leaves NASA without a confirmed leader for what may stretch on for over a year. That is not ideal for the world’s most accomplished space agency--or for America--especially as our geopolitical rivals move at impressive speeds to overtake our edge in the high ground of space. Hopefully, a new nominee will emerge soon as NASA needs leadership during this uncertain time.
I have been lucky to live the American Dream and if you know anything about me--you know this was never about political ambition, personal gain or enriching others. I love my country and I care deeply about America’s competitiveness and leadership in space. 🇺🇸”
I didn't know Isaacman existed until the flap. I have no idea what his merits may have been. Generally, in industry, it is a poor practice to install someone at the top who may have a biased relationship with a major contractor. Trump knows how to pick people for major undertakings; he builds skyscrapers for a living. I'm content with his decision.
I looked up Isaacman's entry in Wikipedia. What makes for a good pilot or good astronaut may not be relevant to being a good Administration Director. If he does not know why NASA takes so long to get anything done (it's not a mystery), he is not the right man for the job.
It would not have gotten better. So now it will probably not get better faster.
Edit: None of it was fake. I missed that part of your remark (I misread as "taking"). The Russians were not fake for manned spaceflight. The Chinese were not fake either. Everyone else is not fake for unmanned spaceflight.
Not saying everything is fake, but just gotta ask why do the female astronauts need to have the tools doll hairstyle? And why the wires for the flip-stunts?
Your very accurate in your assessment. Our corporation is going through this. A new engineer wanted to fix structure in place with velcro. JHC, I wish I was kidding. The new batches of higher education are dumb as rocks.
NASA did go to the Moon, but it was a different culture at the time. It (JPL mostly) sent very capable mobile probes to the Martian surface. The present NASA is ineffectual. Obama sold nothing to Musk. SpaceX was launching satellites years before Obama became president. Musk recapitulated rocket engineering from scratch, which is part of his genius.
Well, you got it wrong on the first part. "Lunatics" were termed on account of their supposed increased activity during the full Moon (something that does seem to have a sociological basis). And you got it wrong on the second part.
This is my first thought. Between SpaceX and Space Force, what use will there be for NASA. There’s a pretty good chance that they already have tech several generations more advanced than what NASA has recently got now. If this is the case then they should just shut NASA down in its entirety.
These rats are probably jumping off the sinking ship. Not sure people will be happy to know all the lies and BS they were told, not to mention the huge sums of money that "went somewhere else" in the process.
Ahem, did you know senior NASA staff make so much money they can purchase luxury aircraft. Think about that? Government officials can buy private aircraft for themselves. Just fueling an aircraft is your wages for a year. NASA, is so inept they sent a shuttle back to earth knowing it was missing critical heat tiles. Everyone on board died. No one in the engineering department would sign off on this so the administration forced the return of the shuttle. It will be fine. Well it wasn't. This Government agency is bloated and full of sycophants, get rid of it.
I don't think modern day Nazis even realize that they are Nazis. Academic brainwashing and peer group pressure. They think they're smart, modern, and know better than any that came before them. They are arrogant and superior (supposedly) and therefore lord over others. The devil has been very , very busy with academia.
By its nature, there is no such thing as an un-self-aware Nazi. You are just trying to impute a slander against people you don't know. Hmmm....who, historically, did that?
K. Bye. I mean, seriously. At least they are picking up their toys and walking away instead of being fired for not putting an RNA shot into their bodies.
Good. I think this is exactly what Trump wanted. These are all nothing but politically motivated and useless people, and my guess is they're not quitting, they're running away. The game is up at NASA.
In 1955 Von Bron described how we needed to build a refueling station in order to get to the moon...and less than 15 years later technology had advanced so much that we didnt even need that step anymore......lol
Buh Bye.... miss you already

So was moving to Chicago just a cover for their governmental takeover and the move to Crystal City of Arlington County, Virginia ?

Sounds somewhat like Maryland. We don't know what the Dems/Commies are doing here though. Probably nothing legitimate!
Interesting.

What did you think about this man as Head of NASA?

We’ll see.
Who will keep on faking all the space shit then if they have bad case of brain drain...?
It would not have gotten better. So now it will probably not get better faster.

Not true for the female astronauts killed in the Challenger disaster. No wires. Or sue NASA for fraud...but that will never happen.
Your very accurate in your assessment. Our corporation is going through this. A new engineer wanted to fix structure in place with velcro. JHC, I wish I was kidding. The new batches of higher education are dumb as rocks.
NASA was never going to moon/mars. Obama sold all of our NASA space travel RnD to Elon Musk.
Pre-Obama NASA = SpaceX.
People who stare at the moon used to be called lunatics. Now they just stare at the moon with better equipment, but they are still lunatics.
Well, you got it wrong on the first part. "Lunatics" were termed on account of their supposed increased activity during the full Moon (something that does seem to have a sociological basis). And you got it wrong on the second part.
Not a big deal. The defense and space industries have already been privatized.
This is my first thought. Between SpaceX and Space Force, what use will there be for NASA. There’s a pretty good chance that they already have tech several generations more advanced than what NASA has recently got now. If this is the case then they should just shut NASA down in its entirety.

Hopefully all the Nazis
What "Nazis"? You are at least half a century behind the times.
Let me guess, you know someone who works in NASA.
Several of my colleagues were involved in NASA programs. And I was involved in proposals for system development for NASA.
I don't think modern day Nazis even realize that they are Nazis. Academic brainwashing and peer group pressure. They think they're smart, modern, and know better than any that came before them. Welp, what have we here? Hmmm?
Quitting? Looks more like a RIF (Reduction in Force). I love it. They NEVER thought it would happen to them.
#HairsprayGravity will do that
2000 senior secret society members quit because the game is over! God wins!
Who's gonna fish eye lens fake space now?
The fact that there is 2,000 senior staff tells you all you need to know...
They’re self-DOGE’ing.
Remember when Obama said that NASA's top priorities were "Studying Climate Change" and "Muslim Outreach"?
Yeah... those were the days.
K. Bye. I mean, seriously. At least they are picking up their toys and walking away instead of being fired for not putting an RNA shot into their bodies.
NASA has 2000+ senior staff?? Sick. Cut away.
these poor 2k nasa employees. always forgotten, never remembered...
What the hell does NASA even do?
LIE to us about space and launder money
check out Aulis.com
Only thing dumb is willful ignorance...especially when knowledge is readily available.
LOL...Maybe you will wisen up and stop falling for nonsense one day, till then Good Luck .
It makes employment opportunities for people with worthless college degrees. The best gain employment in the private sector
...who among the disgruntled will ' talk ' and disclose
If you know they're out there, you'll probably be just fine.
Good. I think this is exactly what Trump wanted. These are all nothing but politically motivated and useless people, and my guess is they're not quitting, they're running away. The game is up at NASA.

All government agencies are massively bloated.
What makes you think NASA was any different???
Apparently they are dead weight. Ainy shit come out of NASA for years.
2000 senior staff out of 18,000 total staff, for what that's worth.
