People need to take the time to actually think about their life, the position they're in, and realize that they can take steps to mitigate future problems and steps to improve their situation.
It seems like no one thinks like that anymore. Everyone seems to move to escapism. I've noticed that when women get uncomfortable in public, they immediately pull out their phone and stare at it. That's the worst thing possible because now your situational awareness and observation ability is out the window. That's the same mentality people have with depression. Run and hide instead of facing the problem.

It's worth it, even if your dead broke just go. Sometimes that fear of going hungry if you dont GET UP and work can save you mentally.
There are also things like halfway houses where you can live until you find a job.

I had a Dr. visit today, and of course the topic of "...have you gotten your covid vaccine yet?" I answered NO and told him that "we've had this discussion several times before and it remains NO." He reminded me that I really should because I have several risk factors. I chuckled and said back to him "...I bet I've read more about these vaccines than you have." He didn't answer me back.

Depression and anxiety can be treated easily. Suggest your friend speak with a different doctor and ask to try some low dose anti-depression meds... (which also treats anxiety) I’ve seen people have a complete reversal of mood and feel better within a couple of weeks. Modern serotonin medication isn’t like the old school with lots of bad side effects. I’ve seen it work miracles.
You can even see a doctor at a clinic for this, they will often give you a prescription.
Well at least your friend knows that doctor is a quack and probably getting paid for the number of people they can force to get the jab. Change doctors.
