I understand, but maybe he wanted to do it to keep true to only his battlegroup and preserve that. It's a very powerful visual statement and there is something seemingly sacred about it.

But I cannot speak for the man. Maybe he did want some company to March with.

Not many of our WW2 vets are left. My dad died dec. 2019 less than 2 weeks from his 95 birthday. We must make sure those left are taken care of.

There's a project that's been on going to get their stories before they all pass into history. My grandfather was was 92 when he passed and was part of the 75th ID.

Note that this is a Russian soldier (look closely at his medals). Street actually closely resembles an area from Stalingrad near the Univermag, at least that's what it looks like from my recollection. Wonder how dated the picture is? Not many WW2 vets left. Even if they were 18 in 1944, anyone left is in their late 90s+.

Nothing against the message. Honesty, nothing against the former Soviet soldier. Most soldiers, regardless of the country they fight for, end up being manipulated and exploited by their overlords for evil agendas. Have sympathy for all of these poor souls and their shared bravery, honor, commitment to duty and love of country. Hang the real evil puppet masters

Idk, man, yes they were manipulated, but soviets committed some of the worst atrocities. Raping women, pinning them to barn doors in jesus-like poses, so many cases of that, quartering children with vehicles, crushing women and children alive with tanks.

I know it was circumstance, but we "just following orders" is an excuse we don't take.

Granted soviet soldiers came from a time where death and carnage was normal, their own government had them pinned by the balls, the propaganda was immense, and others committed atrocities to them.

I am not cool with that either. I know times of war are much different, but raping and nailing people up just to bayonet them after a whole squad rapes them, I don't care who commits things like that.

When it comes to Vietnam, those who killed innocents for fun I do not respect them. Circumstances were different because the viewing disguised themselves as civilians and one couldn't know who was who so dressing up as civilians will cause people to shoot just in case. They pulled that tactic, our guys had to adapt.

Raping and killing for fun though? Also in middle east, children running towards you could have bombs under their clothes so once those tactics are tried and a child doesn't comply and runs at you, I can understand the act.

Raping is never okay, and soviet atrocities were unparalleled.

But at the end of the day, I never served and was never in that place of mind where I watched my brothers die in front of me, so what do I know.

Keep in mind we don’t know his story. He’ll he could’ve been one of the school children that was given a rifle and told to shoot. We don’t know and I honestly don’t like to assume the worst of people.

Atrocities all around. But we can't lay collective guilt on an entire military let alone country, because of some bad apples.

If he is a vet of the Battle of Stalingrad its impossible to overstate his achievement. He fought in a great battle that determined the course of human history. Had that battle been lost, the USSR would have fallen and the nazis would have had access to all of Russia's oil and its millions of men to draft to into service by force. Its impossible to know for sure what would have happened, but WW2 might have taken a wildly different turn. Stalingrad was the largest battle in history bar none, and one of its most important.

And in Stalingrad, largely it was reservists and freshly drafted conscripts with shit equipment joined by the rear echelons of the Red army, and Red air force, fighting the largest, best equipped, and most elite units the Nazis had, while the nazis were still fresh in the war, and running top-level high morale after winning a string of crushing victories that stunned the world.

Had even 1 bomb, or 1 artillery shell land on the famous T34 factory at Stalingrad the USSR would have been crushed in the war, left cripped and unable to manufacture their war-winning tank, and yet somehow fresh drafted farmer with 5 minutes of training crushed the best equipped, best trained, highest morale military force in the world at the time, the infamous Nazi SS.

And they NEEDED that factory. As the war progressed onwards it would build 55,000 tanks that were needed to replace battle losses to the nazis.

And I believe its fully possible to sing the praise of the common soviet solider even if Stalin was evil. Stalin didn't win the BoS, it was men like these, ordinary people who wanted to live in peace but answered the call to defend their homelands.

You mention this, when we also had luck on our side and were a mere minutes from a totally different outcome.

Read into exactly what happened at the battle of Midway. The Japanese Admiral misjudged what armament he should have loaded the planes with. Had the crew switch over the weapons, and had only like 3 planes with anti ship bombs. The Japanese admiral opted to not launch those three planes against our warships because in their doctrine, you never sortie less than a full squadron. This grave mistake allowed us to get the upper hand at Midway which helped us significantly through the Pacific campaign.

Also look into when the U.S. dropped dolls inland on mainland Europe causing the Nazis to divert some forces from the beaches and allowed us to actually get a foothold on mainland Europe.

There are so many unlikely things that went right for the U.S. in WW2. Sometimes i truly believe God is on our side.

LOL what now? Hitler repeatedly expressed the desire to drive the Russians and Slavs to extinction. Had the nazis won, the Russians would have been enslaved and slaughtered by the hundred million. In fact Hitler expressed the desire to genocide slavs even more so than the Jews, jus the slavs proved harder to kill and didn't live in Germany where he had control.

Life under communisms sucked, and was horrible, and Communism was terrible, but they survived it. They would have been extinct otherwise.

My step-dad fought in North Africa, was the sole survivor of his unit at Monte Cassino. He was wounded, pinned down by a sniper for four days, survived on his dead comrade's biscuit rations. Passed two years ago aged 99: always had biscuits by him, they meant survival.

We cannot begin to imagine what these men went through.

If you reverse image search, it pops up as a shot from a parade in Russia from 2007, people tracked him down and found out his age, he would've been 9 years old during WWII.

The lesson about WWII is how fucking retarded it was, no aspect of it should be venerated or worshipped or even respected, it was a global exercise in mass stupidity. Everyone died to lose their sovereignty, wealth, democracy and children to globo-homo.

What was the legacy of WW2? Millions upon millions upon millions of Europeans dead, and all we get from it is holocaust museums out the back of it, endless reparations costs, debt and a [anything right of lenin is nazi]. Harden your hearts to this, WW2 was the biggest fucking con ever.

The feelings of the Russian people concerning WWII run far deeper than mere politics. No one knows the human toll of that war on the Russian population, much of which came from the communists themselves through stupidity and outright malice. Estimates range anywhere from 20 to 50 million deaths.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– SomeRandomGuy77 1 point 3 years ago +1 / -0

much of which came from the communists themselves

Really.

You must understand, the leading Bolsheviks who took over Russia were not Russians. They hated Russians. They hated Christians. Driven by ethnic hatred they tortured and slaughtered millions of Russians without a shred of human remorse. It cannot be overstated. Bolshevism committed the greatest human slaughter of all time. The fact that most of the world is ignorant and uncaring about this enormous crime is proof that the global media is in the hands of the perpetrators.>

I absolutely agree. I am writing to the casualties attributed directly to the war. The bolshevik casualties are unknowable too and have a similar, if not larger toll. The deliberate famine in the Ukraine is an example.
