Fun fact about Pokemon Go, it is banned in Indonesia because users kept wandering onto military bases looking for "pokemon".

Also InQTel, the private investment branch of the CIA, is one of their investors. Same with Google Earth

You all should make some spicy memes about this.

I can do it, but I'd rather not hog up the stickies.

I think their points is that on those apps, you are consenting to the geo location. How did the geo data get captured of random people?

Obviously I know the geodata is real and accurate, but it is an honest question: how did Dinesh get ahold of the geo data?

Anyone can share the data, like Dinesh. Few are tracking every American. That question put the answer on your lips. Dinesh got the data that shouldn't exist and finally used it for good.

Yeah but how did he get the data? You may think you answered my question, but you did not. You said anyone can share it. How did he get it? Did all of these dumbass felons share it with him? Did he buy the data? Did he setup his own wifi networks at each dropbox?

How did he get the data?

Google maps will ask you to review a store/location after you visit it - even if you didn't use them by any means to locate it

Standard GPS can get down to 2m. With RTK you can get down to 1 cm. Phones use WiFi scanning, cell tower scanning, Bluetooth scanning, accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers in addition to GPS for state estimation. Our mates at Google probably throw all that real time data into a Kalman filter that spits out your location down to the fucking atom.

That's why Google maps can tell you when food places are busy or not.

And you can speak to the precision of the data they have on all tracked cellphones at any given time? Don't mean to sound dickish but a lot of armchair experts abound

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– ATLAS_ONE 1 point 4 years ago +1 / -0

I don't understand your question. Are you asking if I have personally audited the kinematic data from every phone? Of course not, I was commenting on the technological capabilities of modern state estimation and how it could be used to obtan a persons location over time in great detail. I don't specifically know the quality of the data True the Vote had access to, but I know what's possible.

▲ 1 ▼
– Buttery 1 point 4 years ago +1 / -0

You demonstrated an understanding of GPS in general and are applying it to data you haven't seen. So I wanted to know if you are certain that this wide-range trawling of location data is that precise. I assumed it was based on pings to cellphone towers, not GPS, as GPS isn't active on every cellphone at all times.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– ATLAS_ONE 2 points 4 years ago +2 / -0

I'm not addressing GPS alone, I am talking about state estimation in general. Hence why I mentioned RTK and all the other sensors in phones that could be used for state estimation.

I'm saying location can be that precise when you combine various sources of data. The cell tower ping and GPS is just two sources of data. All sensors have error and a level of uncertainty in their measurements. When you combine multiple sources of data together and process them with a Kalman filter you are able to correct these errors and reduce uncertainty in real time. The reliability/accuracy increases in proportion to the amount sensors/data sources you have (up to a point of diminishing returns). If the GPS is turned off then the filter will drop a source of data and location accuracy may be reduced depending on what is left over.

If cell tower pings were the only form of data used then it might be unreliable. I also don't know at what point in the chain that data was taken. When I do this on a robot all the data is collected and processed in real-time on the vehicle. The location data that is spat out from this process is sent back to a control station for viewing. I would imagine a phone would perform the filter on the device itself as well, then send its best guess to whoever it's programmed to (google, network provider, app developers server, etc). Cell tower data alone may bypass this completely by pinging phones on it's network periodically from the network provider end (I don't work with this data so not sure).

The 2000 Mules take away. If you’re going to commit a crime, murder, theft, and or election steal, you best leave that got damn phone at home. I’ve already known this about the tracking ability of our cell phones. And if you don’t ever want to show up on someone’s radar you better be walking or using either a bike - or - a car made prior to 1997 and have zero modern day tech on your person during the time of the crime.

The small “uh oh” that I think dumb criminals won’t pay attention to in the doc is... even I can purchase data from resellers and data mine and become a amateur detective / vigilante and start solving crimes based on geo tracking data. Burner phones are not the answer for criminals either. Anything that has to connect to a cell tower to communicate can be traced. Just because you throw the device away doesn’t erase that devices geo tracking data/history.

▲ 4 ▼
– muhqtardtho 4 points 4 years ago +4 / -0

Also I don't think you can get burner phones for cash without an id anymore. I might be wrong. My criminal days are long behind me.

– CrimsonSentinal 4 points 4 years ago +4 / -0

That and or a credit card to activate. We bought a burner phone for our son who went to the Boy Scout National Jamboree the year Trump spoke. Just setting the phone up we had to jump through hoops. I’d be shocked if criminals went to such lengths. True, you can get a “cash card” Visa/MasterCard but the verification of setting up the phone itself was insane. I speculate this is done intentionally to discourage criminals from using them in the first place.

If you are outside and can see the sky "the sky" is watching you. They don't need a phone to follow you. I would bet that every second every square foot of the USA is being recorded. At any point in time once they have your location they can go back in the recording and follow your every move.

It's said that U.S. military is 50-80 yrs ahead in tech- before it reaches the public domain. Think Star Trek. Cell phones, GPS, and facial recognition has been around since the 60's (per Dr Preston James of VeteransToday.com)
