Talk about things like "forcing God's hand" implies to me that the writer truly believes these people are capable of outsmarting God or putting Him into a bind of some sort.

Satan knows the Bible better than any of us. God, who created him out of nothing, who spoke him into existence, is certainly able to blind him as to how his actions cause prophecy to be fulfilled. IMO, Satan is always trying to wreck God's prophets' prophecies, but his actions will always end up fulfilling them.
I think it's just referencing man's free will. If God has a plan based on certain milestones and men reach those milestones (for better or for worse), then His hand is forced to act.

I’m pretty sure the Apocalypse of St John was written for his contemporaries. (ca 90 AD) I’m also pretty sure a case can be (has been) made that all he prophesied has already come to fruition.
Maybe we’re already there but haven’t yet fully awakened to the reality. Perhaps the “second coming” already happened. Perhaps the “fullness of the gentiles” is the billions of Christian believers. I try to live as if that’s true. If Christ is in us and we’re here then He’s here with us, as always “both now and forever and unto the ages of ages. Amen”
If someone from the 1st century AD time traveled to our age they’d be sure they were in Heaven. Ordinary people live far better than kings of old.
