Aussie here, Victoria / nsw border. I can confirm Optus is down, many banks / markets / ATM based type of operations.
Melbourne trains are out.
Although someone in the w.a state (West Coast of oz) claims not affected by Optus.
Weird peeps online are making claims that they can still access Facebook and tiktok but not anything else. I can't confirm any of that, my family and neighbors who have Optus are down both phone and Internet including their f.b etc
Thanks for the report!
Know anyone with a landline (in the US when power was out, landlines still workedl).
As a kid those were our got to flashlights until we could find the battery operated ones in the drawer.
The joys Gen Z will never know.
Do you still have the copper wire phone network in the US, that still works in a black out?
In most of Australia the landline phones are via the internet cable except for remote rural areas that still have the copper wire network.
No electric power no landline phone, mobile phone only.
Of cause the Government and phone companies don't see a problem with this. They just say in a blackout, use your mobile phone.
Why would you have a fixed internet phone you can't depend on?
Now if you're old and can't use a mobile phone or you live in an area with unreliable mobile phone reception, then you are stuffed!
Landlines in our area work until the batteries along the line fade and go flat. Then out till power is restored and batts recharge.
Thanks for the information,fren.
About 10 years ago one of my old mentors strongly recommended to anyone who was able to pay the extra fees to buy an old land line before they were lost.
Many rural areas near me still have old copper landline access. Cities want to upgrade for sure, though the difference is buying phone via satellite, cable/net provider, or choosing the old school phone company.
It may not be available everywhere.
If you can access the copper network, they are usually more reliable in emergencies.
This new tech via internet, either mobile or broadband, the Authorities can switch it off when they see fit.
Then it's radios and the fun of copping with jamming.

Yes much (if not most) of the US still has copper lines if they even have a landline. I don't expect that to last much longer with more areas getting fiber lines for cable/internet. My last house had phone jacks with copper to the telco but my current house has no phone line. I think they will die out with the boomers - everyone else just uses mobile phones now unless they get phone service through their cable company or (a small minority) VOIP providers.
Thanks for that information, fren.
The copper wire network is good in an emergency, like a power failure.
It appears most developed countries are going over to the fibre network now.
What good is a landline when everybody else has mobile? Who ya gonna call
There are still a ton of fax machines, and they don't work as well over VOIP as they do over a landline.
Emergency services. :-)
Landlines here have tried to an nbn style
The other few that have landlines. It keeps makeshift local communication centers open at least. Hope we never need to get to this point, though if family or friends choose to pay for this emergency backup, you can stay in touch with them.
Don't forget you needed one of those 20 foot curly phone cords to reach far enough to get to the drawer. Of course once you got the flashlight the kid(s) had to untangle the phone cord.
Untangling the cord was the most fun part of for me as a kid. ๐คฃ
The incident is an excellent warning about transitioning to a cashless society.
But I think what happened is that the CEO of this company is 100% a diveristy hire.
Ms Kelly Bayer Rosmarin.
So.... ghosts in the machine?
What better way to raise awareness about the dangers of going digital than well-placed outages etc.
Hmmm....
Yes very glad to see msm articles about the dangers of cashless society popping up after this.

Not seeing anything unusual here.

Optus outage hitting Telstra customers Hundreds more Aussies are struggling to make calls through Telstra, as the nationwide Optus outage continues to wreck havoc. https://archive.md/9pvKB
W.a?
Victoria. Looks like bunch of people had outages for half a day - but only with one provider - Optus. Lucky we dont use that.
Iโm looking on netblocks.org, but thus far Iโm not able to confirm.
As an Aussie I can state Optus is down. Banks are down, Melbourne trains also. Although someone in the w.a state claims Optus isn't affected ๐ค so east coast only???
Good on you mate! Did I do that right? Texan.
Yeap. ๐ It's funny realizing ya home slang gets lost on others ๐ I was always lost with certain terms in American movies (not that I can recall them right now).
Like totally!
Goodonya mate! Ourya goin'!
Coronal Mass Injection?
In North America Northern Lights visible as far south as North Carolina. Ham Radio bands shut down for several days all over the world.
I will need to confirm that with some neighbors. I should get a lisence just to know what I am doing & not get raided when I get my own set.
Absolutely! A wise move...you can study for HAM test in USA on QRZ.com or ARRL.org and you can take practice tests online....not sure what the laws are in other countries. Good luck fren!
Downdetector AU. https://downdetector.com.au
Any lead on the cause of the outage? If banks are out of money would they pose an outage to cover up the bigger problem
It is believed to be maintenance work gone wrong.
Now is a good time to invest in a radio. Amateur handsets are relatively inexpensive and licensing isn5too big of a problem if you can find an Elmer.

Seems to be back up for the most part.
Yeah yeah, let me know when it persists for more than a day. People freaking out at every outage these days.

Oddly enough my land line Internet is down here in AZ, but I still have mobile data.
In Florida, I had complete outage this morning for 3 minutes. Absolutely nothing worked. Beta test, I'm sure.
I got a taste of that weekend before last, we lost both phone and internet even though they were different companies. Power stayed on though.
mine went out for less than an hour last night. southeast u.s.
