This isn't a revelation or in opposition to Catholic teaching. It's well known that Pilate did not want to crucify Jesus, but he was bullied into it by the Pharisees.
Pilate was appointed governor by Sejanus, who was second in command to Tiberius Caesar. Tiberius suspected Sejanus of sedition and had him executed. So when the Pharisees shouted "We have no king but Caesar", they were directly threatening to accuse Pilate of treason. Pilate delivered Jesus up for crucifixion to save himself and his family from torture and execution, and the Catholic Church has always presented him that way.
IMHO mods should not sticky this clickbait. Sounds like one the of old familiar pseudepigrapha that is new to the shocked, shocked influencer. I'm not bothering to find out which one.
It's a fake letter that has been around for years on YouTube. The question is, why is it being reposted now? It's Iranian wartime propaganda to get people to hate Jews and Catholics.
it doesn't even make sense... Jews i get, at least in theory, it paints them as bloodthirsty zealouts, but hell, the scripture even supports it, and wouldn't the church, which occasionally persecuted jews as I recall, have used something like this for propaganda purposes at the very least in the middle ages. I get it now, with the late pope being woke, sure, but for two thousand years? just saying it stretches believability awfully damn thin.
I always thought this was known already. Learned early in Catholic School, I don't think it reflects that poorly on the Vatican. Catholics all are aware Pilot didn't want anything to do with the crucifixion. Not defending the Vatican, just that it's a non starter for the asleep.
This sounds like "The Report of Pontius Pilate; sent to Tiberius Caesar in Rome," copyrighted 2008 by Michael A. Shea, from www.GodTheOriginalIntent.com, based on a footnote citing William Hone's "The Apocryphal Books of the New Testament", pp. 275-277, David McKay Publishers, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1901. In it, Pilate purports to avow all the events recorded in the New Testament. (It sounded familiar. I thought I had a copy, and found it.)
Something published in 1901 is certainly not a new-found secret. And I have no idea what was originally put in Hone's book, or where it came from (if it came from anywhere). Therefore, I have to regard this as clickbait hopium, until and unless anyone can authenticate it. (I went to Shea's website, which seems to be a thoroughly Christian-oriented resource for the MAGA-inclined, but couldn't find this 2008 document upon a cursory search.)
The letter is great reading. Very uplifting. But fact or fiction?
In the Methodist Church, we say the Apostles‘s Creed every Sunday and every time I hear the line that says Jesus “suffered under Pontius Pilate” I think no he suffered under the Jews. Pilate tried to save him.
Sorry, but I don't see any big "smoking gun" here. I grew up Catholic, and nothing here differs much than anything I've ever learned about Pontius Pilate.
I mean, ffs, pilate literally does everything in his power not to crucify jesus, even the bible says his wife warned him not to harm him. why woudl the vatican try to hide something that's laid out pretty well in scripture!?!

There are no surviving original letters by Herod or Pontius Pilate, to each other or to anyone else. Any manuscripts of them which do exist are forgeries or much later copies. A Syriac MS in the British Library Oriental Collections (reference number Add. 14609) contains a 6th or 7th Century copy of the letters. Here is the catalogue description of the MS:
THE DOCTRINE Of St. Peter;-The life of St. Anthony, by St. Athan- asius;-Account of the Monks in Egypt;-Life of Serapion;- Letter of Herod to Pilate, and of Pilate to Herod;-The Recogni- tions of St. Clement. On vellum, of the vith or viith century. Quarto. [14,609.]
They’re all psychological dramas anyway. I find the letters riveting no matter who wrote them. The soldier’s letter to Pilate talking about when he saw Jesus preach on the beach was my favorite. Delicious stuff. Biblical fan fiction at its finest.
It doesnt really change anything in the grand scheme though. Maybe it points out a corrupt club in the seat of power early on but we already knew it existed. Jesus' death still stands for all the same reasons and still has the exact same meaning for christians. Maybe even more so, but really we already knew it was corruption all along. Why else would he have been killed?
This is clickbait, plain and simple. The purported letter is not a recent discovery, and in any case, it supports, rather than discredits, the Catholic Church.
FWIW, there’s a centuries old tradition (not to be confused with Christ’s oral teaching Tradition), that Pilate repented of his role in Jesus’ trial, and spent the rest of his life in prayer and penance.
In fact, mount Pilatus, in Switzerland, is named after Pilate, and legend has it he made his way to that region of Switzerland, and lived out his life there, in prayer and supplication. No idea if it’s true, but Catholics in that area have no issues with it possibly being true.
Um…I read the pseudepigraphal letters of Pontius Pilate nearly twenty years ago online. They were incredible, but I don’t see how they blow the whole story up.
What? The bible clearly shows he was chosen corruptly. They took an insurrector Jesus barracks over Jesus Christ. What exactly does the Vatican teach that is so contrary? The Bible itself shows pirate giving the people their way, it showed the corruption of the Jewish leadership. I do t get what the big revelation is. Maybe just catholics will get it.
I don't follow anyone on social media. Matter of fact I don't use social media, none of it, never have. Not Myspace, Facepage/Lifelog, Telegram, Twitter/X, Truth, Insta, Snap or any others. I simply saw this posted elsewhere and linked it here.

Fuckin' Barabbas.
Maryland family man.
Kek
Roger that. This would be a confirmation of what is revealed in the gospels about Pilate if found to be authentic.
It's all right there in The Gospels.
I see no reason the RCC would want to hide this, it condemns the Jewish authorities not the RCC.
I think whether Pilate was a sympathetic figure or not has no bearing on the ultimate message of Jesus and Christianity.
yeah, but it paints the pharisees, etc as bloodthirsty zealots and corrupt officials who forced pilate's hand for their own ends.
it really wouldn't make sense for the church to bury this unless they tried to do it in the last ten or fifteen years to appeal to the wokies...
We knew this.
Came here to say this.
I always thought this was known already. Learned early in Catholic School, I don't think it reflects that poorly on the Vatican. Catholics all are aware Pilot didn't want anything to do with the crucifixion. Not defending the Vatican, just that it's a non starter for the asleep.
Only the ones that actually read the Bible.
never went to catholic school, but if you crack open the gospels at any point, you could figure this out...

Yes, thanks, it was a pretty good pseudepigraph as they go.
In the Methodist Church, we say the Apostles‘s Creed every Sunday and every time I hear the line that says Jesus “suffered under Pontius Pilate” I think no he suffered under the Jews. Pilate tried to save him.

I'll stick with the Gospel of Luke, which essentially makes the same point, but has far better verification. (Read chapters 23 & 24)

Please for the love of god don't share links from this dude. All it takes is one look at his pinned post to see why:

Uh huh..."Neat story, bro"
It's that whiplash character again...
Where can I see the actual letter?
I'll do you one better.
Read the actual Bible where he says Jesus is innocent. I find no fault in this man.
That x/tweet is just made up click bait.
I have been telling everyone that for a LONG TIME. Especially the part about him washing his hands. He knows.
I just thought maybe someone dug it up from somewhere. It would be written in Romanian.

This is good and all but i thought this was already the accepted story?

2000 years from now they may unearth the Epstein list.

This doesn't pass the smell test for me. I'm no fan of the vatican. But doesn't make sense for them to hide this info from the public.
Why does Jesus look like he eats 200grams of protein a day?
The scripture itself describes Pilates as being aware of Jesus's innocence.....

Interesting…but nothing new
04-2025.... I guess the other letter of the same guy with the same content, already touted since at least the 60-ties is a fraud?
