Whoa! Mayor of Colorado City, TX just resigned after making this FB post. TLDR: The government owes you nothing, and you’re on your own for this cold snap. (media.greatawakening.win) ? SHITPOST ?

I agree with the handout part & that we shouldn’t expect the government to save us but the frail & the elderly need a hand in times of trouble & not everyone has family. Helping people is part of being a good human.

I want my government to make sure the water flows, the streets are paved, and the electrify provides a consistent current.

He is not wrong. People should be to a certain degree self-sufficient. But the government telling people they are owed nothing when we pay taxes is lunacy. You should not expect the government to put food on the table for you and your family if you are capable, but it should be out there doing something during an emergency.

Exactly. This is why we pay taxes. They take our money so that we can have water, electricity, etc. We have paid for these services with our tax dollars. So in this case, YES the gov't DOES owe us these things. WE PAY FOR THEM.

I agree that we should all be more self-sufficient. But my gosh what does he expect people to do? Stores are out of everything, here. I had a feeling something was going to happen like this last month, so I stocked up. But not everyone can afford to stock up. If you're living paycheck to paycheck, you buy what you need for a week or two at a time.

And these people are fine with the gov't taking all of our tax money and telling us we can't open our businesses, but heaven forbid they make sure we have electricity and clean water.

I absolutely agree with you all. When I think of a handout I’m thinking more like welfare type stuff. The things we pay for are far from a handout and helping those who can’t help themselves is something we should all try to do.

this is just a calculated misapplication of this sentiment used against the taxpaying hardworking orioles who typically hold this position correctly toward people who mooch off of others

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 3 ▼
– killerbunny88 3 points 5 years ago +3 / -0

Exactly. I pay my taxes and always pay my water bill and electric bill. This is not mooching. Mooching is expecting goods and services for free. This is expecting the service and products that I pay good money for. This is expecting our electrical infrastructure to be up to par. We found out that our legislators told the electric people to winterize our systems back in 2011 after there were some issues like this. They ignored the order and didn't do it. It's ridiculous.

We have high property taxes and sales tax. Plus we pay for our electricity and water. We are paying for a product every month. Part of that contract is that we receive reliable electricity and clean water.

I know! With all the regulations, we can't put a big windmill in our neighborhood backyards or go around chopping down random trees for firewood. We have to pay $$$ to dig a well for water, and everything has to be approved by the gov't. It's insane! While it is possible to go off grid, it is very difficult because how do you work and make $? Most jobs are closer to urban areas, so that makes a lot of people stuck. And even with a mostly self-sufficient lifestyle, you still need to be able to buy things. Ammo, gasoline, flour, sugar, salt, etc.

The government has made self sufficiency very very difficult.

Amen to you and everybody else who preceded you on this thread.

This country and this world desperately need more self-sufficiency, both for its own purpose, and for the character it build...but the time to promote it is not when it's 10 below, like, "Surprise and Fuck You!"

Doing so now, in that way, is nothing less than a psy-op attack on self-sufficiency, making it seem disastrous and callous, when it's fully the opposite.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– killerbunny88 2 points 5 years ago +2 / -0

I completely agree! It's insanity. My husband are seriously considering getting some land and homesteading. Anything to lessen our reliance on the government. The problem is, we still need to live close enough to his work. So it's really hard to find a rural enough area. Our area is exploding, so there are a lot of places that used to be very rural, but suburban neighborhoods are moving in. It's difficult to know where we could go where that wouldn't happen.

The government does establish regulations for roads, water cleanliness, and rules on how electricity is deployed. Leaving it to the people alone without regulation is the fastest way to ensure a shitty job.

There has to be certain degree of regulation. Heck, deciding who are bad guys is regulation.

What you are suggesting is we return to the world of no regulation. Read a history book, we do NOT want to go back to the days of the robber barons.

That is just another world where there is absurdly rich few, massive amounts of poor folks, no middle class, and even less justice for the little guy than there is now.

Why is anyone paying their electric bill if they aren't owed electricity? You pay for a service, then the service company is required to do everything possible to provide said service. Demanding that service company figure out how to prevent these issues in the future is hardly the same as asking for a handout.

People pay water and electric bills. When doing so does not mean they have either in a weather crisis, they need emergency help. Chances are very good, he was not freezing his ass off or in the dark or dealing with animals that are dying from the bitter chill. If emergency assistance can't function because of the weather, then people in trouble are truly fucked. I doubt anyone who is in the shit weather right now is praising his asshole tone, whether he makes legit points or not.

People, for goodness' sake, have a little discretion. If only for once, just to experience what it's like.

Just because someone damns destructive socialism, and gives you the yippees in the process, does not mean he is not an incompetent douchebag who should have overseen continuity of paid-for utilities through an emergency. And then when this clown fails, he tells everyone that they should be digging their own wells and starting their own power plants in the middle of an epic cold spell. Beyond awful.

This guy is the King of Dickbags, and makes you all look ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC for cheering him on, when his obvious public purpose is to make anyone who now comes out in principled stand against socialism be easily classified as someone who wants grandma to learn how to dig her own well and generate her own electricity when it's 20 below.

Do you ever get tired of getting played?

Maybe a winter storm that is not just unusual but unheard of for decades -- so for probably millions, not happened for their entire lives -- is not the right time to take this stance though. Especially because, again, they pay these power companies. And generally when you lose power it's "tough shit, no credit back"

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– PewPew82 2 points 5 years ago +2 / -0

Did TX have warning of a pending storm?

We had a few days notice here in Michigan. Plenty of time to make arrangements. I am always stocked up on the stuff I need, but I did go over our power outage plan and emergency plan with my 10 year old the day before we got our storm.

permalink parent save report block reply

A few days is not enough time for people who have never experienced anything like this to prepare. They probably don't even know how

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 4 ▼
– tenthousandspoons 4 points 5 years ago +4 / -0

And it's not just about time. This part of the country, a storm like this is so unusual, their very infrastructure is not equal to the challenge. Houses are built differently there. Pipes aren't laid as deeply, so they are more subject to freezing. Heating systems aren't installed to Michigan standards, because Michigan cold is almost unheard of in TX. I'd be willing to wager that many of the people there don't own winter coats warm enough to keep them from shivering in their homes while the power is out.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– Wtf_socialismreally 2 points 5 years ago +2 / -0

Yeah and probably no thermal blankets or heavy blankets either.

It's way different..and you better believe if it's hard during harsh winter in Michigan when your power goes out (it is) it's even harder in Texas when it's that cold

We are talking about utilities here. They are a government monopoly.

The takeaway is pretty simple: Monopolies are bad (including government ones) because they get to a point where they don't give a damn about the customer (especially true of governments).

This mayor is merely the poster child for a government employee who does not give a damn about the people who pay his salary.

People should be prepared? Sure. And the government has no responsibility to be prepared, when they use force to create a monopoly? Nobody can agree with that.

Here is his resignation post:

All, I have set back and watched all this escalating and have tried to keep my mouth shut! I won’t deny for one minute what I said in my post this morning. Believe me when I say that many of the things I said were taken out of context and some of which were said without putting much thought in to it. I would never want to hurt the elderly or anyone that is in true need of help to be left to fend for themselves. I was only making the statement that those folks that are too lazy to get up and fend for themselves but are capable should not be dealt a handout. I apologize for the wording and some of the phrases that were used! I had already turned in my resignation and had not signed up to run for mayor again on the deadline that was February 12th! I spoke some of this out of the anger that the city and county was catching for situations which were out of their control. Please understand if I had it to do over again I would have just kept my words to myself and if I did say them I would have used better wording and been more descriptive.

The anger and harassment you have caused my wife and family is so undeserved....my wife was laid off of her job based off the association people gave to her and the business she worked for. She’s a very good person and was only defending me! But her to have to get fired from her job over things I said out of context is so horrible. I admit, there are things that are said all the time that I don’t agree with; but I would never harass you or your family to the point that they would lose there livelihood such as a form of income.

I ask that you each understand I never meant to speak for the city of Colorado City or Mitchell county! I was speaking as a citizen as I am NOT THE MAYOR anymore. I apologize for the wording and ask that you please not harass myself or my family anymore!

Threatening our lives with comments and messages is a horrible thing to have to wonder about. I won’t share any of those messages from those names as I feel they know who they are and hope after they see this they will retract the hateful things they have said!

Thank you

Tim Boyd(citizen)

I am an Ohio country girl who lived most of my life way out of the mainstream way...I hunt, grew fruits and vegetables...had a well, a pond stocked with fish and could heat with wood, coal or conventional gas/electric. Also put in a big generator, that switched on when power went out...had a fruit/root cellar and canned more food than you can imagine. I could be self sufficient for months (even put in a 300 gallon tank for gas and smaller one for diesel )...got a pig & 1/2 cow each year and raised chickens for eggs and meat....I know how to survive! Hopefully the people who own my old place appreciate it lol...due to a physical disability and age I had to sell but still carry the knowledge...but here's the point, many out there in this world can't survive because they never had to. Times up I guess... This ex mayor is right and wrong at the same time..many people can't help themselves because of illness, disability or age....sounds like he had a breakdown from the pressure of the job to me...

My take on this:

  1. I feel that nobody should ever rely on anybody but themselves to ensure that they and their family are taken care of and safe. So in that regard, what the mayor is saying is not wrong.
  2. If the people’s taxes were supposed to go towards infrastructure and such, but in reality they were spent elsewhere, then this guy is a huge asshole.
  3. Either way, the timing of his comments is abysmal. Something like this should not be said in the middle of an emergency that nobody was prepared for. Either state it ahead of time so people can choose to take initiative or not, or say it after the emergency has passed and people are whole again.

fair enough and i didn't intend to. just saying give me an honest politician no matter their political leanings over a phoney anytime. if even Hillary was honest and admitted to the masses that she's a crook and into pedo and satanic shit and she got legitimately voted in on that platform, well that's our republic and we'd have to live with it. of course there aren't that many f'ed up Americans so think we'd be safe!
