PSA for the GAW ladies
posted 3 years ago by ElegantVelociraptor 3 years ago by ElegantVelociraptor +300 / -0

In light of the news coming out regarding Linda Frickey, victim of fatal carjacking, I wanted to remind the ladies on the board to lock the doors to your vehicle as soon as you get in.

Getting everything situated in the car can wait.

Lock your doors.

AND, please, when you have to stop behind a car, like at a stop light, leave room. You should be able to see the bottom of the tires in front of you and some pavement. In the event that you need to bolt, do not get yourself locked and blocked.

If you are rear ended in a traffic accident NEVER get out of the car & call the police immediately.

CARRY.

Also never be afraid to just slowly drive right into or over a person or crowd of people threatening you. If you feel fear for your bodily safety, it's game on. You have the superior weaponry, weighing thousands of pounds. They will get you if you don't get them. They shouldn't have threatened you.

They'll move.

Keep your doors locked until you are ready to leave the vehicle.

Keep your doors and windows locked on the house until you intend to open them.

No need to be paranoid. I did this out of habit when I lived in the country.

Thanks El. Also, get a concealed carry permit if you are not in a Constitutional Carry state. Keep weapons like a pipe or a bat with a nail in it in the car.

I want a pipe with nails welded to one end of it. But only lightly tacked on. That way you could hit someone with it and the nails break off inside them

Another PSA for women, be armed.

It is getting to the point that I am not going out unarmed anymore.

You never know when some freak is going to push you into the path of an oncoming train, or hack at you with a knife, or drag you with your car as you are just trying to go to lunch.

Make sure you get the LCP 2 if you have issues with racking your ammo. I have the original and it’s a bitch to rack. I then bought the 2 and it’s much easier. A gun is only useful if you can use it.

Also get you a hand cannon if you can.

Can't go wrong with revolvers, easy to use, maintain and reliable.

I'd recommend a good .357 magnum, there are some pretty compact ones out there, plus you get the added capability of firing 38 special instead, so 2 for one pretty much.

Also get training for it, don't just get the gun and leave it in the glove box, train train train, then train some more.

▲ 1 ▼
– Munchaussen 1 point 3 years ago +1 / -0

Don't let the salesman talk you into anything outside your comfort zone. And revolvers go bang with every pull...until they are empty anyway.

I remember my Dad telling me to make eye contact with everyone. Look around, make eye contact. If you hear someone behind you, turn and make eye contact. They are less likely to do anything to you if you have done that. Always walk with confidence, don't look at your feet or phone. Stand tall, look around, constantly scanning the parking lot. Even if you are with someone else, do both of these. Also when we had keys, put your keys between your fingers. if someone approaches you, you can scrape or startle them enough to get away. People aren't your friends, no matter how friendly they look or act.

This. Being aware of your surroundings and making adjustments to avoid being a victim can help you tremendously.

If you can carry a firearm, please do so. Get some training if you carry.

Some examples i grabbed from my ccw magazine:

Basically be aware of your surroundings at all times. Make eye contact with people. Do not appear timid. GET OFF YOUR DAMN PHONE WHILE WALKING AROUND IN PUBLIC!

Pumping gas - scope out the area while pumping gas. Some people feel the urge to stare at the pump or get on the cell phone. Keep your head up and eyes open. Try not to create blind spots when re entering the vehicle (van/suv).

411 - person approaches you to ask for directions, info, spare change, etc. to distract you. An accomplice can strike at this moment. Dont let strangers approach. Be in control of their distance. Carry a bright pen light to shine in their face and ask "how can I help you?". They will get the idea and leave.

Workplace - with disgruntled employees/customers. When entering and exiting a room, ask yourself "where is my tree?"...meaning ballistic cover. Cover that will shield from firearm or knife threats. Doors are not good since this is concealment from view.

Positioning - imagine yourself at a car dealership waiting for an oil change. Position yourself with the widest field of view. Keep an eye on whats happening in your peripheral.

Phone - Already mentioned this but is very important. Get off the damn phone while walking around in public. You are staring at a screen not paying attention to your surroundings. Easy target.

If no firearm, carry OC spray.

Walking to vehicle in dark parking lot. If possible get security to escort you or have a co-worker walk with you.

The "person approaches to ask for something" thing happened at my house, I was about to put up some stuff and two guys said "He this may sound weird but do you have a shovel?" I said "Nope" and stared at them until they walked away.

I was holding a shovel.

Wow I feel insulted. "Average female temperament". Maybe I'm just not average. I could go for that. When panic sets in for most people, I immediately go level headed and fearless. I've seen grown men panic and so much feel like bitch slapping them. And I say this as A woman.

In some ways, I wish that I never learned that lesson, but I am grateful that I know that I can count on myself.

Yep. Have to agree. Someone tried to mug me when I was 17. They failed. Their bad luck to have caught me on the way home from martial arts class . We were always taught situational awareness as part of our regular training and it’s stuck. It irks me when I see young girls walking about glued to their screens .They may has well have a target on themselves or a sign saying flypaper for freaks. Have drummed it into my daughters to put the fecking thing away til your in a minimal threat area

you are not "average". most women freeze. but some women for whatever reason, calm down and focus in times of stress.

consider yourself lucky.

the point is to know yourself. I am pretty calm but a disaster in the physical world.

my daughter is the opposite. we are a great team. I may carry the gun in my purse, but she is the one who will shoot the gun. I am the one who will engage the criminal, she is the one who can pull the trigger.

we are both outliers. work with your strengths for the best strategy.

I've been in some very iffy situations and do consider myself to be lucky to be alive and still in one piece. I also know that I have been blessed with the God given gift of discernment. It's like I can feel or smell trouble ahead and I go into my "cool as a cucumber" mode. That has saved me much grief, while others around me are freaking OUT. It sounds like your daughter and I have a lot in common!

Head on a swivel.

But situational awareness is more than just having your eyes open and that's something conspicuously absent.

Learn to really look. Don't just stare absentmindedly. Don't just scan.

Learn to take in what you're looking at. Body language. Eye behavior. Learn the difference between socially awkward fidgeting and nervousness because they're anxious before doing something bad. Watch their hands. Listen with your ears. So on.
