Losing the internet for months would be the best thing to happen to society. People would become human again.

Underrated comment. I have said for years now, the internet is why society collapsed.

True... as would I. But, for every good thing the Internet provides, there is a bevy of bads. I just don't think our weak society was ready for such power or the darkness it can hold over one's soul. Internet addiction is real. Add porn and other vices, it becomes all-consuming for those who don't have the will or want to walk away.

my sister wisely said to me years ago "bill gates knew exactly what he was doing". People are not living anymore, just plugged in, all the time. Not to mention it is the easiest way to weaken a nation without bullets and tanks. Or else he is selling Starlink, which is excellent btw. I am old enough to remember life and happiness prior to the internet. It's a crutch and time gobbler.

You guys aren't wrong.. Though I would argue that society was asleep long before internet. The desperate clinging to trust in institutions and MSM we've seen the past few years comes predominately from my generation that bemoans the internet generations. And perhaps the decades long slow boil never goes into hyperspeed circa 2016 without internet. And that whole Q thing doesn't reach millions without it. Maybe internet is the best ally and worst enemy at the same time?

You're right, but the big deal here is that not only the internet would be shut down but No more power grid, no more hospitals, no more airports, etc. A Solar eruption would act like an EMP... everything would be destroyed. In short, it would be chaos. And once again we all know NASA is using fear to control people.

How will starlink function, with an additional app or a system to be bought?

But what would the point be If it were the only network, and why wouldn’t a solar flare effect star link?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 6 ▼
– orangetastic1 6 points 2 years ago +6 / -0

Really, a lot depends on the specifics of the outage.

If you can get onto the Internet with Starlink, but can't reach any servers because they're all disconnected, then does it really matter? You couldn't even communicate with other Starlink customers unless it was point to point.

If you can't reach DNS servers, then unless you know the IPs, you may as well be offline.

Why would starlink be impervious?

permalink save report block reply
▲ 12 ▼
– comfypepe 12 points 2 years ago +12 / -0

Because the outage will be manufactured by those who control the ground networks, but they can't shut down the satellites.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 7 ▼
– stansmithguy 7 points 2 years ago +7 / -0

Well, Starlink still relies on ground stations for routing the traffic. The internet is still land based. Starlink is just like a wifi mesh. You could probably still be able to communicate with other Starlink users in theory.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– NOT_ADMIN 1 point 2 years ago +1 / -0

No you use a phased array antenna. You completely bypass ISPs as the traffic is beamed directly to you.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– stansmithguy 1 point 2 years ago +1 / -0

Yes, but it's still like a wifi mesh and all the sattelites are connected to the internet via a global array of land stations as far as I know. Traffic between 2 Starlink users on opposite sides of the world doesn't hop over 100 sattelites, it is routed to the nearest land station, travels on line to the station nearest to the other user, is beamed to the sattelite and down to the user. But I'm not sure if that's the way it still works, haven't looked into it since before they started rolling it out.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– NOT_ADMIN 1 point 2 years ago +1 / -0

however, it is an ideal solution for anyone who has a remote location, with access to power, but where traditional internet or WiFi services are unreliable or nonexistent. We have seen Starlink successfully working in rural locations with a low-density population that has limited, or no service from traditional fibre, cable, and DSL internet connections. An example of some other use cases where Starlink would be useful; onboard boats, oil rigs, remote mountain ranges, and other rural locations.

It appears to be design woth the idea of working when other services won't. It can work even where cell service stops like federal waters.

Unless there is an actual solar storm, right? I'm still confused on this - what makes Starlink even viable as a backup, as Musk suggested, in the case of dangerous solar winds?

Like, I get the implication that NASA is providing cover for a false flag, but the sun remains a very real threat to modern stability. Is Starlink actually a viable backup in the case of a real solar emergency, or not?

It won’t. I was going to buy one anyway for our RV. But I’ve always thought that StarLink users may be the first ones to get service in a outage, with Internet 2.0, whatever that looks like? Martin Geddes was working on it at one point…

A solar flare or nuclear EMP would knock out Starlink as well. Or knock out any ground based equipment that could get signal from Starlink.

The only way Starlink serves as a backup is if our primary communications structure is disabled in a non EMP manner. I.e. if the cables are physically cut or radio towers physically damaged.

$600 for equipment and $120 per month. Cheaper than xfinity exept you must buy the equipment.

– lovemyGod 4 points 2 years ago +4 / -0

The equipment holds up too, in harsh weather, 2nd winter I have had it, through -30 wind ice storms, 3ft snow around it, it is in great shape, and its not even on the roof, right out there in the front yard with the wire going in my sons room to the router, 3 people in house using it all the time, it is worth it, in my opinion. Living real rural, up the road there is a campground and he got it for his campers, and shares it with the farm and neighbor across the road. We get serious winters up here, and it stands up.

Where I am in Alaska, Starlink is exactly $1 more than our regular - i.e., crappy - provider. I'm tempted.

▲ 2 ▼
– Christine_grab 2 points 2 years ago +2 / -0

To clarify, Starlink limits the number of users so that they can provide fast internet. Ukraine had zero users, so they could send a bunch of units there and they'll still have fast internet (Ukraine is a huge country).

Like your area, our area has a long wait list. But unlike your area, Starlink is the same as the other internet service providers in our area. Spectrum has doubled our rate in the last year, and apparently the other providers in our area have, too.
