Me and my highshool buddies were discussing this in the mid 70s. 50 years ago.
this was pretty well-known among Pearl Harbor veterans by the early 1990s even. I had a chance to meet many of them in San Diego and yeah, they didn't think very highly of what FDR did to them and their shipmates.
In 1978 I heard a junior high school history teacher (who was 1/2 Japanese), say this. It always stuck in my mind. I wonder where he heard it from.
In 1993 some college classmates and I arranged to meet several Pearl Harbor veterans in San Diego so that we might interview them and capture their own stories and recollections of the attack on audio tape. The vets were awesome and told us lots of things we had never read in history books. We transcribed all the interviews and donated these transcripts and the original audio tapes to the Honnold Library in Claremont, California. I've actually seen this audio tape archive referenced on some of the TV Pearl Harbor documentaries since then. I'm glad these veterans and heroes got their stories preserved for future generations.

When i was in middle school in the late 90s I remember my grandfather disliking FDR. Which was weird because we were taught that he was the greatest president in history. The more I've learned about FDR the more I understand my grandfather's low opinion of him.
The mainstream media has been corrupt for a very, very long time, engaging in psyops to undermine the American people from within. "FDR is a hero" is just one of their many mind control operations (of course, the National Education Association was fully on board with this one).
It's quite extraordinary how people like your grandfather could see through this programming, in a time before the internet when there were really only three or four TV channels.
Honestly, I believe it.is even worse. According to "Stalin's Secret Agents" by M. Stanton Evans et al, Communist agents in the FDR White House (Harry Dexter White for one) purposely provoked Japan into attacking America. The purpose of this was to free up the Siberian divisions awaiting a Japanese invasion on the Asian side of the USSR - remember the Japanese had a 1-1.5 million man army in China and Manchuria. Given the earlier Russo- Japanese war of 1909 Stalin was concerned about fighting a two front war against Germany and Japan. By attacking the United States, and seizing the Phillipines and other Pacific Islands, Japan chose to drive south south instead of North, freeing up the Siberian divisions to move toward Moscow and face the Germans. This is one of many reasons things started to turn ugly for the Germans after the winter of 1941. The Russians played us like a fiddle. Infiltration has been happening for a long time.

I am fortunate that I grew up hearing that "Joe McCarthy was a hero."
This experience probably laid much of the groundwork for becoming an independent thinker. Without this influence, I may have succumbed to the propaganda we have all been drenched in for decades as they boiled the frog.
I remember driving by the Kenedy house in Florida with my grandparents and my grandmother telling me what criminals they were. I don't remember them talking about Joe, but they were not fans of FDR.

Many historians have made this point. It was argued that FDR knew it and let it happen so war was an easier sell to the American people. While FDR is revered by many, I always thought he was an awful President. He ushered in true socialism with all his misguided programs, especially how Social Security was structured.
The other bine-headed thing he did was prolong the Great Depression due to his really stupid income tax code reforms with a 90% top tax rate! What wealthy person in their right mind is going to risk capital for a paltry 10% return after taxes?

Not only was it not a surprise attack, but it's also a myth that it was an undeclared war. The movie "Tora Tora Tora" touches on this too.

Regarding D Day, what kind of mindless Generals would let their men wade in chest deep water and ocean surf and walk (all wet and weighed down) into a slew of bullets coming from machine gun nests perched on the beach head? Aerial support could have easily taken care of those nests.

But they got hold of one of the better books on the subject. They even got FDR's early intel on the break in diplomatic relations, which came via our superior decodes according to The Codebreakers and which providentially came several hours before the Japanese embassy knew they had to deliver the diplomatic message personally after bombing had been ongoing.
They missed the Japanese naval academy final exam that had asked students for 20 years as an essay question how they would plot an attack on Pearl Harbor.
The judgment on this is whether FDR and his generals were right to allow this much death and destruction for the "greater good" of entering WWII and helping finish it off. It's clear to me that, given they way they went about it and they way they milked the SS-ridden populace for add-on "Victory" taxes, the "greater good" was false and also more destructive. Delano Roosevelt is tied for worst president ever and his statement about infamy is projection.
There was a WWll historian on Coast to Coast am, gosh could have been ten years back or so. He noted all this about FDR and having the ships in port and hatches open. One other fact was the week after Pearl Harbor you can hear banging coming from the sunken ships indicating survivors still alive and there were orders to leave it be
We visited the Arizona memorial in the late 80's and listened to stories from a survivor about those knocks. His explaination was they couldnt do anything because of the amount of fuel and ordinance in the harbor. The man still had tears in his eyes after 35 yrs while telling that story

It actually was a sneak attack. FDR was expecting the main attack to be against the Philippines (it was), but didn't expect an attack against Peal Harbor. They may have sent the carriers to sea against the "remote" possibility of an error.
My father knew this at the time. It was common knowledge among the sailors that it was a put-up job. They were personally aware that FDR had embarked on an unannounced war against Germany (the real objective) by ordering antisubmarine patrols in the Atlantic. This was October of 1941. Subsequent investigation has exonerated RADM Kimmel and LTGEN Short of any negligence, since they were deprived of relevant and urgent intelligence on the disposition of Japanese forces.
FDR didn't let anything happen. Remember at the time if he fired one shot at Japan without a war declaration then he'd would have been impeached.
