It is a satirical novel that is quite funny while painting a picture of life in Africa. (IIRC, the author spent time in the Peace Corps himself, ) There is a scene in the book where one of the characters who started off an anthropologist and chucked it all to live there permanently tells the main character that 'the loneliest people in Africa are African-Americans'. Essentially, there is a disconnect because while they "look" one way (African) , they are "seen" another (American) by the locals. It's not the expected Roots reunion. I wonder if this is really what happened here. Because we've got bugs and if you ask the people of Flint, we have water issues too.
I know a Navy officer when I was still living in the NW. We worked together and he told me he wasn't accepted among the Somalians that were all in cliche together. When he walked by them, they all tensed. He said they acted like he's going to attack them. He is black and they are black and they do not accept him because he doesn't look like them. A working example goes a long way to ending a never ending debate. Tolerance is key to keeping all good relations but there comes a breaking point.
