My very first thought... they're insane.

Insane: insanitary; unsanitary; cluttered & unclean; mind completely full of shit.

Fun fact: before 1941 when the Pentagon was built, the largest building was an insane asylum...

Slash Violent crime and petty crime rates in one easy step. Slashing the numbers of Mentally Ill people on the street will also cut into the Drug Trade.

It is badly needed. The mentally handicapped are not getting the help they need. The violent ones end up in prison. The guards become care takers.

Their lives will be just as bad when they are overmedicated in an institution.

May be true, but the lives of everyone else that came into contact with them on the streets will be better and safer.

Then they will muck rake over the terrible conditions they are being held in. I don't think you can win with crazy people.

For public good I would rather them them dead to the world in a guarded box than only 50% dead to the world and the rest of their time stealing for the next high.

Truthfully though, I think they should only have a couple real chances at sobriety. Give them a true rehabilitation where no drugs enter, career skills that we demand illegals for and a work/housing program and I if they can’t stick with it after 2 6 month opportunities the next time they are picked up under intoxication it’s just death, no appeals.

It is NOT to clean up the streets, as much to take CARE of people who otherwise live on the streets!

Something needs to be done I agree but institutions as a rule take real money to make them work. They have an unemployed or uninsured population and money comes from the government, our tax dollars. They tend to employ those at less than adequate wages and attract people that can not get a job anywhere else to care for vulnerable people that are elderly, infirm, and mentally ill.

Anytime you have an institution that can keep people against their will indefinitely, for their own good, you will have those whose agenda does not match yours.

I agree people are not cared for in these places including nursing homes , giving minimum wage to do horrible work . However , True as it is they are on the streets, how much more harm ,some will improve , food , showers , medicine , shelter . They harm other people too . Here in San Diego do many mentally ill attack people it’s dangerous !

The company i work for has spent $10,000 to replace broken store front glass in the last 4 years. They piss and shit all over the place - it's not only a health hazard its expensive to clean up. They've caused TENS OF THOUSANDS of dollars worth of damage from vehicle break-ins and stolen property in our parking lot over 4 years. They go through the dumpsters, throwing hundreds of pounds of trash into the parking lot and I have to clean it up. Its awful. Years ago I had an older vehicle that ran great with low miles. It got broken into constantly though. They kept jamming stuff into the ignition and smashing up the steering column. Pulled what i could from junkyards to repair the column but eventually could not find parts anymore. My car was basically totaled from break-ins. They must be removed from society and at this point I dont care what it costs because it already costs me plenty.

What you described is criminal behavior and mental illness maybe but criminals belong in jail .....probably drug addicts and you are right ....they need to be off the street.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– Simple_Doot 1 point 278 days ago +1 / -0

Right. The vast majority of homeless people are homeless because they have life-destroying addiction issues or are so mentally ill they cant get a job or take care of themselves in any way. Leaving people on the street of either status is anti-compassion and dangerous. It costs society more to leave them alone than to force treatment.

I understand if you reward that behavior you will just see more of it, however, I think direct giving to the needy is way more effective than giving to organized 501(c)3's. Every time I go through a drive thru and am asked if I want to 'round up for education' or some other thing, I let the person on the other end of the speaker know that I just paid my property tax which dwarfs anything they are probably getting by 'rounding up' thirty cents or so on your meal. And in my community, a ridiculously high percentage of my prop tax goes to schools, i.e., 'education'. I also then dwell on how much Goodwill CEO and other top execs are getting at these charities, and I cannot enjoy my food. No wonder 70% of our pop (US) is overweight in this country. Stress/cortisol overload. Rant over.

Absolutely! You can't just run off the homeless people. Where are they supposed to go? Many do need mental health help. Many need drug rehab programs and many need decent paying jobs.

It's a crisis in our nation of epic proportions and it needs epic type solutions. I'm glad Trump is beginning to address the core of the situation.

I don't know where you are going to get enough people who can take care all of the mentally ill and retain their own sanity. Those kinds of people will drive you nuts and you need almost superhuman patience to deal with them. Look at cops and what they have to deal with and how they get so cynical from doing it.

The "defunding" of mental institutions in the United States was decisively initiated by the deinstitutionalization movement in the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1950s, this movement gained momentum through a significant shift in philosophy and the introduction of antipsychotic drugs, which empowered individuals to effectively manage their symptoms. In the 1960s, President John F. Kennedy unequivocally supported this movement by signing the Community Mental Health Act in 1963. This landmark legislation allocated essential funding for community-based treatment facilities, establishing them as viable alternatives to large institutions. The transition involved a clear reduction in state funding for large psychiatric hospitals, reallocating those resources toward community-based care. This shift was driven by multiple factors: the advancement of antipsychotic medications, a growing civil rights emphasis on patient liberty, an urgent need to eliminate inhumane conditions, and pressing fiscal incentives for states to shut down institutions and reduce costs.

DO IT! Make them self sufficient facilities gardens, farms, laundry facilities, food services. Everyone has a job and contributes to the community. If I ever won the lottery that I don’t play this would be my dream. We have to get these people on track most are just lost not incapable of rehabilitation.

That's where they used to hang out and live. JEB helped the closures in FLA. The big Arcadia hospital , and the homeless were everywhere in west Central Florida.

Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush oversaw the closure of one state mental hospital, G. Pierce Wood Memorial Hospital, in 2001. The state's overall reduction in mental health services during his tenure, and for decades before, has contributed to a shortage of psychiatric beds.

And so it goes...

Yep I live in a community that once housed a state hospital for this exact reason. Although their were some problems with experimental procedures. I believe we can correct that now. Once the hospitals shut down we were flooded with crazy homeless people. They need a place to be rehabilitated and be productive citizens.

A while back on this board when talks about Reagan and so forth all his accomplishments, there were many of us that wrote how many disasters for our country and the family unit, no fault, divorce etc. happened. I mentioned the closing of the mental hospitals and how the streets were flooded and it really catapulted the homeless !!! man did people slap me down saying that had nothing to do with the homeless it certainly did. I saw it. I live here.In Cali .

Thanks God! Most of these people need help! No one would choose to live like they do and they need special attention! The only reason the demonic secret societies closed these institutions was because they wanted chaos on the streets! Chaos is their tool! They only exist because there is no peace. Without chaos their new order cannot be instituted! This was by design. They will launch satellites no more!
