They decided to destroy it (as it might reveal they'd broken the Japanese codes) The Marine I interviewed (EJ Nabers) said he also decoded a message the USS Indianapolis had been hit by a torpedo - but because that was a classified mission (delivered the atom bombs to Tinian) they didn't report it or send air sea rescue. Not too long ago I read an article that it was found about 400 miles off course and sitting on the bottom of the ocean. They thought the navigator forgot to adjust for the moving across the dateline and that changed how he read his maps and position.

That was initially identified as that of a Woman by the Doctors who examined it. The Chaos of the war resulted in the location of the remains being lost. Though examinations of the attending examiners notes by modern medical personnel believe the Skeleton was a Man’s that was misidentified due to damage.
Which might explain the fate of Noonan. Though Earhearts final resting place would still be unknown.
