So people invest 30+ years get 8 (if they are lucky) years before they die, and the government keeps all the rest (plus the tax they put on SSA) to spend on everything but America and Americans.

Ya know, if the government would make it ILLEGAL for them to borrow from SSA like it is for EVERY OTHER retirement program there would NOT be a problem with SSA running out of money. Here is an idea, the government PAY BACK all the billions they borrowed from SSA for welfare and Medicaid.

Sounds like Rand is right again and some of our MAGA friends are confused?

What he's saying sounds correct, if the money isn't there you raise the age or taxes

If you have a proposal to fund it otherwise, I guess that can be heard too

A lot of young people (almost half of zoomers) don't even expect to ever see $SS as it is a broken inefficient system: https://thehill.com/business/4164957-nearly-half-of-gen-zers-think-they-wont-get-a-dime-in-social-security-survey/

The problem isnt the age of the people its the abuse the system is taking from politicians. Giving money to non earners and illegals. Nobodybwould be good with giving the general public a military pension they didnt earn. So whybare we sonquick to give a civilian pension to people who dont work? Now we want them to work longer? Assnine. Rand paul is a moron.

Sounds like Rand is WRONG again to me... when he states "The ONLY way" to fix it is to either raise the tax rate or raise the age to 70. NO! That is NOT the ONLY way. It is just the only way he is considering.

Trump is right. SS income should have zero taxes. We paid in more than we will ever get back out of this system. That in itself is a baked-in tax via the loss we will experience on this investment.

Secondly, raising the age to 70 with the average (USA) life expectancy of 78.39 years! Look folks, have you ever looked at the lifestyles, health and existence of the last 8 years of old people? It isn't pretty. Medical problems show up. Costs go up but income does not. Many of the assets you accumulated start requiring expensive maintenance. I think they need to lower the age to 60! I retired at 50... with no SS income. It was tight but I was still healthy and enjoyed a less-expensive lifestyle. When SS did kick-in, it was freedom. Freedom to spend on things I hadn't been able to before. If I had to wait until I was 70... well, I would still be waiting because I'm still not there yet.

I use to like Rand Paul, I really liked his dad, but something has changed with Rand. He is either deeply compromised or terribly misinformed. Not sure what it is but something is wrong with him.

Trump is right but we haven't figured out how to cover the difference if we stop taxing it --other than accruing much more debt. Tariffs, even at current pre-deal levels, aren't going to make SS solvent long term. Rand is being practical. Those are the only two options that are based on something other than hope.

What would work is making them optional. I think we should just level with people that SS is currently an additional federal tax that is going to have more and more limits on taking any benefit.

Rand Paul is correct. RP has said many times that the system has failed and major reforms are necessary but NO politician wants to stop the abuse. Without stopping the corruption, fraud and abuse then the only way to save the SS system is raise the tax or age requirements. I qualify for SS now but have elected not to receive benefits…yet. This damn health insurance catastrophe is killing self-employed, only 2 x in my life I wished to be older (16 to get a driver’s license and now 65 for Medicare health insurance). Pathetic

This is a slippery slope though, first it's 25% income taxes, then it's age 70 to collect, and before you know it you're paying out half your income to a system that won't let you collect until you're 85.

France showed this doesn't work, it's a shitty can kick that will happen over and over again siphoning from the young to prolong the glory days of generations long past. Just phase the system out by limiting it to those within 10 years or so of retirement age, and start cutting SS taxes as the claimant pool shrinks.

Everything FDR the commie bastard made turned to shit, SS is not a sacred cow unique to that rule.

He has it wrong. Run it properly, use the funds properly and they should be able to keep up with inflation and possibly lower the age back to how it was designed. They have abused our mandated retirement funds for special projects, instead of collecting interest on government backed bonds etc. What a mess they have made of this!

This is a logical solution. There isn’t enough money at the current rates and will run out if it hasn’t already. More people are collecting it (probably illegal means) and so either the age needs to be raised or taxes increased. Simple, if not it will go away. I think the whole thing should be abolished regardless it’s a socialist program.

▲ 3 ▼
– bluewhiteandred 3 points 252 days ago +3 / -0

Rand has ruffled feathers so there's a lot of anti-rand sentiment that is irrational. If there isn't money to fund $SS then he's correct that you have to raise taxes or age for it.

The only other option he doesn't go in to is funding it some other way, but that would be another discussion (some are saying for example the spending on illegals could go to $SS; sure, but if it doesn't, we are back to raising age or taxes or seeking another fund source)

This a total Uniparty move. President Trump has made it clear Social Security is not to be touched. And, in doing so, he has taken one of the perennial issues off the table that attracts retirees to the Dems. But, just in time for the midterms, Rand Paul is out there trying to throw the Dems a life preserver.

I think rand is being exposed. The only good idea for ss is to end it for rhe upcoming generations. Fund it through a corporate tax no worker input. The same 7.5 perce t they now pay. Then give current workers a real retirement pension system that actually works and thst politocians have zero control over.

This, I am a heavy believer in that SS is simply unworkable with stagnant population numbers, since the whole paradigm is "lots of young people pay for few old people".

They need to just phase the whole thing out instead of jerking our chain with endless age increases and tax hikes to push back the decline another 5 years.

Since quite a few employers offer retirement plans, and most of those plans can be rolled over should you ever lose/leave your job, I find Social Security to be antiquated and people should be allowed to opt out.

Or, get rid of the tax altogether, and use a percentage of tariff money to fund Social Security. Assuming legislation could be put in place that maintains tariffs regardless of administration, makes it as difficult to remove tariffs as it is to change the Bill of Rights, and the fund could not be raided, redirected, or removed.

Isn't anyone tired of the 'Nanny State'? Social Security was started by FDR and it has grown into a giant bloated blob of money the Commiecrats have raided for years to buy votes. Get rid of it, and get rid of all the crap LBJ started. Look at what food stamps has evolved into- SNAP. 42 Million people are on SNAP. A government that steals money from one group of people and gives it to another group of people is immoral and unethical. The Bible is clear on this point in both the OT and NT.
God said to Moses, Gen 3:19, "By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return.” In the NT, Paul said in 2 Thes 3:10, " if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either."

But how can the Uniparty endlessly borrow that money for wars against 3rd worlders?

There is a reason Social Security is one of the largest holders of US bond debt period, and it's not because they know it has better-than-market returns.

Start by kicking off the illegals, the scammers, the foreigners that didn’t pay in, etc.

The income taxes we pay on Social Security income goes back into Social Security. We need to do no tax on Social Security incomes below say $150K adjusted for inflation. The hole that creates could be more than filled by the tariff money. Take the bonds held by the Fed and put them in the lock box.

permalink save report block reply
▲ 6 ▼
– TSearch 6 points 252 days ago +6 / -0

You’re right, a person can start drawing a reduced amount at 62 and the so called full retirement at 67 years of age. And, just about everything you can read makes drawing at 62 sound like a bad idea.

I did a back of the envelope analysis and if a person only makes the average life expectancy, they draw more money out if they start at 62 years of age. If you live past 80, you draw more money out if you wait until you reach the “full retirement” age.

Exactly. My wife and I both started ours at 62. I had my own business which I sold first and she has a pension. Along with the income on our investments we simply used Social Security for extra play money. We were financially comfortable without it but it's our money and we were going to make sure we started getting it as soon as possible. Why take a chance of waiting and possibly dying before we cashed in.

All of the corporate wealth accrued in the 90s and 2000s, without offering healthcare at work or retirement plans until 2014 and ObamaCare. Yes it sucks but there was nothing before that. They started calling employees contractors so they wouldn't have to pay their share, the 7% towards the workers social security. If they started paying eight over employee 7%, this would not be an issue. But they said for 30 years it's going broke and did nothing.

Have we heard from anybody who matters?

The answer is to eliminate Social Security once and for all. It was a socialist construct forced upon us illegally. It was also never supposed to be permanent.

Look at #17 from my post on X: https://x.com/427windsorman/status/1912690175492112804

  1. Eliminate Social Security, and the Social Security Administration. This could be done by establishing a "cut-off" age. Anyone over that age gets to finish out their Social Security payments. Anyone under that age gets all of the money they put in over the years refunded in a lump sum payment that is not taxed. They would also receive a full refund of their spouses contributions, if they are deceased. This could easily be funded by all the other unconstitutional expenditures that would be stopped, as noted in #5 above. Anyone that did not pay into SS will not get SS. Once the unconstitutional / socialist program finishes paying out, then it would be forever abolished.

The question isn't whether Rand is right, or wrong, it is whether Socialist programs have any place in our Republic. They can al be removed, and our money and the fruits of our labor placed back under our own control.
