I guess Lee Zeldin is now banned from GAW and is having his hands amputated.

You are too stupid to live. You should have your hands sawn off and surgically replaced with SPORKS, as far as I'm concerned.

Probably not. The natural composition of a chemical, occuring in natural amounts, on a natural frequency of release IS NOT the same as an artificially recomposited, distributed, and concentrated release.

I don't see how you can prove that. Elsewhere on this page I went through the numbers, and there is far more SO2 in the atmosphere than any human means can deposit in a "concentrated" form. Gases immediately dissipate by dilution into the surrounding atmosphere, and SO2 does nothing of interest (as I witnessed from living in the neighborhood of a large local source). But you are breathing it right now, at 15 parts per billion concentration, completely harmless and unnoticeable.

▲ 2 ▼
– Allergic_to_Blueshit 2 points 31 days ago +2 / -0

But what you need is an AB test and we don't have an AV test meaning what are the levels in existence pre World War II or the start of you engineering. And what naturally occurred in the atmosphere. Secondly it does not automatically dissipate in the atmosphere or the trails wouldn't be lasting for hours upon hours upon hours which they do. And you cannot actually say it's completely harmless and unnoticeable. You would have to compare it to the rise of any other disease and affliction that has happened since the start of you engineering to correlate the data. That is like saying Plastics are perfectly harmless as Plastics are on their surface perfectly harmless however microplastics are not using that as an example. There was no crossing of the blood-brain barrier for microplastics before an accumulation of data. So you're taking a hey you're breathing it in right now and it's harmless as if that's the result of whether it is harmless or not there are things called cumulative effects and cumulative diseases.

Contrails are ice crystals and are a form of high altitude cloud. If the relative humidity is high, they will persist, just like the clouds. They are not sulfur dioxide, which is a gas, which dissipates rapidly by diffusion into the atmosphere. It is a common feature of volcanic eruptions and emissions, which we have known about for centuries.

Yes, I can say it is completely harmless and unnoticeable at a concentration of 15 parts per billion, which is the average composition of the atmosphere. (You obviously don't notice it.) I have lived in an environment of high concentration and, while it is unpleasant, there were no lasting effects on anyone or anything living. What I am saying is backed up by a lifetime of experience, and the lifetimes of others also living in the same world. It is pretty clear you have not researched the subject. It is the old story: ignorance => paranoia.

Plastics and inorganic natural compounds are far different from each other, and no proper analogy can be drawn. The devil is in the details.

Look, relax. We survive in the midst of plenty of volcanic emissions. Human production is about 4 times that, and still no problem. The bogeyman of acid rain was dispelled by proper research. Whole industries are built around the production of sulfuric acid, for which this is a precursor product. We understand it thoroughly. Every lit match produces sulfur dioxide, and we don't freak out about lighting matches.

Why does it rain usually within. 24 hours after these planes finish hashtagging the sky? Why don't I have crickets or fireflies and a huge reduction of birds in my forest? What effect does turning sunny blue skies into gray skies have on the human psyche?

Memorial day is tomorrow. I turned on the heat yesterday. This rainy, cold spring is affecting crops.

The FAA needs to get involved. Those airplanes need flight clearances.

AND WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS EXPERIMENT? (caps intended)

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– killerspacerobot 1 point 30 days ago +1 / -0

These things appear when a more humid air mass has moved into the vicinity at high altitude. Such an air mass is a leading edge of a rain system that is moving in.

I have no idea what you are talking about regarding common animals. It makes no difference to us.

It does nothing to the human psyche. I live where we have constant clouds, contrails, and what-have-you. People are normal here.

Too bad you have a cold spring. Such things happen. I am having a nice, sunny, warm afternoon, but that is not necessarily the way to bet in my locality.

The airplanes have flight clearances. They are airliners. There is no experiment. These are commercial air flight operations. Their purpose is to get from point A to point B.

THIS IS WHY OUR SUN LOOK WHITE NOW!

Ten years ago I theorized that our sun looks white now instead of the warm orange I remember in my youth because they were spraying something that scattered orange light waves. Turns out Sulfur dioxide scatters ALL color wavelengths when aerosolized in the atmosphere.

Yes, people. Our sun used to look like a bright orange ball of fire in the sky. Now it looks like an LED lamp

Ive noticed everyone’s grass is looking different this year. I mean we’re almost in June. I was mowing almost twice a week last year at this time it was so thick and green. People will say drought as I’m in Tennessee. But there are no signs of a drought. Ponds are full, gardens are rich and green, trees and bushes blooming and growing like crazy, as usual. We get rain at least once a week. But the grass is 50% of what it was last year. Weird.

I recently got some night driving glasses that make the wptld look very yellow. As soon as I put them on during the day my eyes completely relaxed and I became calm inside. Like some un seen stress was released. They became so therapeutic I put them in for awhile now every day. I remember when the natural sunlight ight was more yellow than white. At least it seems to me n it was and now its this silvery light we live under. I may be just imagining it, but those glasses made me remember something more natural about the sun light than what we now seem to have. Im not kidding when Insay i get some instant relief when I put them on.

I've been here for 75 years and you are quite wrong. It is always orange at sunset and sunrise, but that is due to long light propagation paths through the atmosphere and normal atmospheric scattering that more strongly affects the blue end of the spectrum. During the normal course of the day, it is bright white. If it is orange at midday, that is due to particulate matter than scatters in a different spectrum than the Rayleigh scattering that produces a blue sky. The sun has always radiated in a black-body spectrum corresponding to about 5,772 degrees Kelvin of color temperature (i.e., white light, effective average). The first measurements using the results of quantum physics took place toward the end of the 19th century. By comparison, "Daylight" LED light bulbs have color temperatures of 5,000 to 6,500 K.

I don't know if you recall this, but it has generally been the case that truly tremendous explosive volcanic eruptions, which inject huge amounts of ash into the upper atmosphere, can result in very colorful sunsets all over the world, for considerable periods of time.

Normal atmosphere scatters all color wavelengths, but more so at the blue end of the spectrum. All gaseous molecules scatter by the Rayleigh process, which gives the same result (some exceptions are the halogens, which can be visible by distinctive colors).

▲ 1 ▼
– Antero 1 point 31 days ago +1 / -0

During the normal course of the day, it is bright white.

Yeah. It used to NOT be, is my point. In the 70s, the sun appeared to be warm yellow all day, not just at dawn and sunset. My observation is that the light from the sun has been harsh white for the last 10 years. Entirely unlike the first 40 years of my life.

The sun has always radiated in a black-body spectrum corresponding to about 5,772 degrees Kelvin

You're talking about extraterrestrial radiance. Atmospheric gases selectively absorb and scatter this light, turning it into terrestrial irradiance, whichbis what Im talking about. The light we see from.our sun AFTER it passes through our atmospere and us scattered in various ways.

You've never seen the extraterrestrial radiance of the sun. You've always seen it filtered through our atmosphere, just like most humans.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– killerspacerobot 1 point 31 days ago +1 / -0

I'm talking about the way it appeared to me and everyone else in the 50s and onward. The radiance from the sun is only very slightly diminished by atmospheric scattering at midday. It looks the same at high altitude, where over half the atmosphere is beneath us.

Where do you live? What is the tendency for the local weather to carry windborne dust?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 3 ▼
– Antero 3 points 31 days ago +3 / -0

You attempted to "debunk" the info by telling us about the extraterrestrial radiance of the sun and how it hasn't changed, knowing full well that the atmosphere and the gases and particulates within it change that radiation profile constantly, changing the way we see light from the sun.

m talking about the way it appeared to me and everyone else in the 50s and onward.

No, you attempted a stawman argument which failed miserably.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– killerspacerobot 1 point 31 days ago +1 / -0

I'm afraid you are trying to pick an argument, but you have nothing to say. I was referring to the actual sunlight shining from the daytime sky, not "extraterrestrial" sunlight. If you are going to trap me, please quote me correctly. And I have pointed out that the color of the sun depends on the path length of the sunlight through the atmosphere (sunrise and sunset), so you are omitting my explanation of that effect. Sorry that you don't like what I have explained, but I am under sentence of expulsion if I argue, so I will not argue. Please have a good day.

The idea was that SO2 combines with H2O to produce H2SO3, sulfurous acid. There was a huge study commissioned by Congress to find out the answer, and it turned out to be an artifact of groundwater sampling. Water steeping in fallen conifer needles was producing the apparent acidity.

I have a firm memory from that time period of political brochures mailed by our local representative decrying the damage of acid rain. He demanded urgent political action of course. The front of the brochure was a photograph of a small shallow lake densely populated with dead trees. It turned out the lake was a beaver pond.

Wait a minute. He talked completely in generalities. He didn't say a word about sulfur dioxide. Which is outgassed copiously by volcanoes (sulfuric smell, anyone?), and is washed out of the air by rainfall.

Jet fuel, of necessity from its origin and refining process, contains trace amounts of sulfur in the form of mercaptans and other organic compounds. The Product Data Sheet (PDS) for ExxonMobil Jet A and Jet A-1 give weight limits on mercaptans as 0.003 %, and total sulfur as 0.03 %. Sulfur is present also as a component of antistatic agents that increase the fuel conductivity to prevent static discharge and unwanted fire. This component is dinonylnaphthylsulfonic acid (DINNSA, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dinonylnaphthylsulfonic_acid). So, a kilogram of jet fuel (about 1200 cubic centimeters) will contain about 0.3 grams of sulfur in one form or another.

By comparison, the concentration of SO2 in the atmosphere is about 15 parts per billion (ppb). Taking this by weight to get a rough idea, where a cubic kilometer of atmosphere amounts to a billion cubic meters, at a kilogram/cubic meter density, there will be about 15 kilograms of SO2. The calculation of how much jet fuel is burned in the passage of a kilometer through the air is a bit tricky, but you can begin to see that the dilution factor is large and that anything added by airplane exhaust will be difficult to discern. I will give it a try. The 787-8 has a fuel load of 101,343 kilograms and an operating range of 13,530 kilometers. Assuming complete burnup (not expected), the fuel use would be 7.5 kg/km, for a sulfur deposition of about 2.5 grams per kilometer of travel, or approximately 0.0025 parts per billion if spread throughout a cubic kilometer. (I think I did the math correctly, but a thousand pardons if I missed a decimal point.)

Numbers are exhausting, but the point is that we already breathe SO2---and the levels are too small to have any importance. i grew up in a town that had a pulp & paper mill that made its own sulfuric acid to separate the lignin from the cellulose of the wood they used for pulp. There was some leakage from the chemical reactors and when a temperature inversion hit the town, one could smell the sulfur and feel the cough from the chest burn it created. It was annoying, but no one ever had any health effects. The aura of the SO2 around the plant was probably responsible for the yellowing and brittleness of old books in the used book shops nearby. I'm not recommending such levels as being healthy; they weren't. But when it is imperceptible (which it is, normally) it makes no difference. And what it would take to truly increase the sulfur dioxide levels would require perhaps an increase in sulfur mining of multiple times the present level. All these schemes of tinkering with the atmosphere come to the shoals of reality: the numbers are unfathomably huge.

So, very good for transparency, but don't be surprised if it turns out to be a nothingburger.

The solar constant is about 1368 watts/square meter. The albedo of the Earth is about 30%, so what comes through to the Earth surface is about 1000 w/m2, provided the sun is directly overhead. The spectrum is essentially identical, so far as human sight and photovoltaics are concerned. (Hint: I work in aeronautics and astronautics, so this is Old Hat for me. The astronomers will tell you the same thing.)

The main difference between the two (aside from intensity) is that the atmosphere filters out most of the ultraviolet radiation, which is a good thing.

If you have some actual knowledge to impart, I would be glad to know it, but so far all you have demonstrated is a stumbling block over the solar spectrum. It turns out that I am an expert in this type of science. What more do you want?

Now, all this is educational. I am glad to share knowledge. But I don't think we are arguing over facts, so please relax.

Speaking about sudden death. NASCAR Suoer Star Kyle Bush died suddenly just a few days before he was suppose to race.

Dont forget sulphur dioxide S02 will then oxidise to suphuric acid H2SO4... so the added problem of acid rains.

SO2 does not easily become SO3. That requires high temperature combustion with oxygen. SO2 can react with H2O to become H2SO3, sulfurous acid, but a big study established that there were no "acid rains." Just an acidic buildup in groundwater soaking in conifer needles.

What is this, 1992? Who says “acid rain” anymore? 😆

Ok but seriously, maybe slightly more acidic PH but the term “acid rain” was SUCH a 90s liberal fearmongering term.

The way I remember it acid rain was the environmentalist's rallying cry of the 1980s. In the 90s they moved onto the Ozone Hole scare. I'd have to do some historical research to locate the exact transition time.

I think you’re right. I was born in 83 so I remember both but might have then mixed up. I remember an avid rain reference in Bill Murray’s “Christmas Carol” comedic remake “Scrooged” with people literally screaming as their faces burned from acid rain landing on them 😂
