Really! I looked up cargo capacity of the big planes. 250 tons. Times 2000! Times 16! Times $1950ish. Times 650! Damn!
250 tons is the total gross weight. That includes fuel, and requires the load to be distributed perfectly throughout the plane. It's a very optimistic number achievable only in absolutely optimal conditions. In reality, cut down that number by a factor of 5-10 to get a realistic loading per flight. A better guess is that a really big plane could haul 50 tons of heavy pallets per flight. And there is no reason to assume they used the biggest planes available. Moving gold would be an occasion for a more stealthy approach.
50 tons per flight is I think double what I just calculated. which would be something like 6 times the amount of gold in Fort Knox.
This didn't happen. It just didn't. This story started in 2020 and nobody heard about it because nobody believed it. It was described as a raid which means you're moving a lot of gold in a short time.
Forget what the plane can carry. How about the logistics of this. How do you get an enormous amount of gold to the planes in the first place. The Vatican doesn't have an airport. How many heavy duty trucks would take it to move the stuff? How long would it take? This would go unnoticed in the middle of Rome?
Think about it. 650 planes is not an unreasonable number.
A Boeing 777 cargo plane, a cheap and ubiquitous option in the air logistics industry, can accommodate around 20 tons of heavy palleted cargo per flight.
I don't know what kind of planes they used, but using this as a benchmark, that would be around 13,000 tons of gold. The US is supposed to have at least 8000 tons of gold, so this isn't far off.
Maybe 650 was excessive or they didn't have the proper gear to take full advantage of the cargo capacity. Or maybe there was additional cargo on those flights other than just the gold. Or maybe they weren't using 777's and had a plane with a lower weight limit.
In any case, the number of plane loads is completely believable. I probably would have probably guessed around 300 if asked, but I can accept 650 is the true number.
This story has been around since 2020.
I think folks have never heard of this story because nobody believed the guy behind or the website it published it. They also claimed the US army shot a 12 foot man in Afghanistan.
I don't believe it and here's why. The Vatican doesn't have an airport. The closest airport is Rome's main airport which is almost 20 miles away. How many trucks would it take to load up 650 planes with gold?

The Vatican is also Rome's most popular tourist spot. It's not an isolated space in the middle of nowhere. The US has bases within Italy but none are near Rome.
Also 650 planes? If you moving a lot of weight, you'd use a cargo plane. A military C17 can 170,000 pounds. Fedex has a cargo plane that can hold 200,000 pounds. these would cut done the number of conspicuous flights you would need. Let's say it's 50,000 pounds per flight.

That is an order of magnitude higher than our claimed reserves. A 747-8, the largest non-Russian cargo plane, has a cargo capacity of 137 tons roughly. 650*137 = 89,000 tons. According to this, we have just under 9,000 tons of gold with a total value of around $600 billion. Even if we had 10 times that that is only $6 trillion.
