Have to wonder if they are taking out the bridges so people can't leave the cities.

Galveston, TX? That would make the New Orleans Pelicans the prime suspects, now that they were eliminated from the NBA playoffs. Context here

So, that would be a no to the question, because Houston is 30 miles away, so it would be rather foolish to go trap yourself on an island fleeing the city.

Why do all the photos of the barge look like they are a crude CGI rendering? All the flat surfaces are perfectly grey without any rust, dirt or footprints.

Am I seeing things?

It seems like you just looked at the thumbnail above. If you were curious enough to click to the article, you'd see tons of video about it.

I went through the article and there was no live shot at the time i saw it as it was "a developing situation".

The only semi-convincing video was added near the bottom of the article. I use a 60 inch 4k TV as a computer monitor so I can really zoom into these images and videos. It still looks wonky.

No way. There are too many people that could simply walk over and disprove that a barge hit the bridge.

You would not see most of that from that elevation, distance and angle.

Rust requires iron, and really unprotected iron. In image 1 on the article, you can see rust.

If you've ever been thrre, you would realize this is not the bridge you would take out if your intent was to disrupt commerce or cut off evacuation route. Mostly just Texas A&M campus, some vacation rentals and a small park. Bridge connects Pelican island to Galveston but does not cross entrance to Galveston Bay.

Being a barge you would think it would be in the commercial channel of the intercoastal waterway.

One would think - the article did not say how or why the barge was there - it was obviously NOT where it should be based on the pics - way too close to shoreline. Maybe it broke lose and drifted, maybe pilot error (pretty egregious if so).

Arent barges typically towed? Im trying to recall the many barges Ive seen go by my condo in Florida. Now these arent on the intercoastal they are on the Atlantic but I seem to recall 3 or 4 barges all being towed at once. My fuzzy memory is because that typically isnt what I am focusing on while sitting on the balcony watching the beach with a cocktail in my hand if ya know what I mean.

This is a nothingburger. Few people are on the island. I’ve lived in this area for over 45 years. Barges hit things from time to time around here.

Lived here for just shy of 60 years. Born on the Galveston Island, near Texas. Beside Texas A&M University, there are a couple of fab shops, some apartments(mostly students), and G&H towing, a Barge towing company, and seawall park. Tourist attraction. Nothing nefarious about this at all. Purely accidental. The bridge was already set to be tore down and replaced in 2025. As for the rail track, hasn't been in service in decades. Most of this small island is inhabited by wild pigs mostly. Some snakes. And a ton of trees used by local birds. As one poster said, this is a nothingburger. Last time I was out there,(FIL worked for G&H) there are no permanent residence there. Besides the pigs and birds. G&H was already planning for the bridge outage by having employees park/work out of Houston. The facility on Pelican Island is a repair facility and will be accessed by tow boats.

In TX, the "county judge" is not really a judge in a legal sense, more like "county administrator"...this whole barge thing is really sketchy, to me, having lived on Galv Island for a dozen years...weird area for a barge, imo...

Looks like a railroad was taken out, not the automobile bridge from the pics. I need to read the full article for more context.

Anyone know what the rail system takes to/from that island?

permalink save report block reply
▲ 4 ▼
– Strelnieks 4 points 2 years ago +4 / -0

Everything that gets offloaded on and off barges probably. Raw materials such as gravel, sand, oil, etc.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 3 ▼
– solarsavior 3 points 2 years ago +3 / -0

The railroad tracks looked incomplete, like it was an abandoned railway.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– HonestBobbin 1 point 2 years ago +1 / -0

Possibly. Though there seemed to be tracks that fell onto the ship. Maybe that was AI generated, just wondering if the train carried product to or from the island. Do shipping lanes drop off on the island & then trains take product where it is needed/requested? If that was the case, I would expect 2-3 side by side tracks at the very least

The bridge was pretty much going to be shutdown because of it's unsafe structure.

My theory, if it's not an actual accident, one of the industries on the island, whether oil or shipping, knew it would be shut down and the city hasn't come to an agreement on what to do, sooooo let's ram a barge into it and force them to make a decision so we can stop loosing money because we can't move industrial equipment across the bridge.

The bridge connects 51st St to Seawolf Pkwy.

Seawolf is a nuclear submarine. Any connection to Red October?

What's about 2 wks away from starting folks? The 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

Where do most hurricanes spawn during the first half of it? The Gulf of Mexico/Caribbean Sea.

In which direction do most of those storms travel? In a N-NW motion, most often hitting somewhere in the western Gulf, namely La and Tx.

Where does most of our oil produced in the U.S come from? The western Gulf of Mexico, namely around La and Tx.

There is a lot of water borne shipping traffic that crosses the Galveston area. I'm willing to bet that this was a coordinated strike meant to weaken the Pelican Island Bridge to a point where it either gets fully shut down or severely hampers local traffic flow in that area. All it'll take is one major hurricane and a high storm surge for 24+ hrs to weaken it more. I'm also willing to bet we end up seeing a major storm or two end up making landfall in/around the Galveston-Pelican Island area sometime between June 1 and Aug 31.

#3 - this is not an accident. Where's the special investigation? This is intended to eliminate supply lines.

Of course it was a barge. They decided that would be the best way to close exit routes across rivers. The Plan is no secret.
