I always thought it was general knowledge that sunscreen wasn’t good for you. I work outside everyday and I very rarely use it. Only early in the year to help build up my natural skin protection (tanning). And even then it’s like nose, cheekbones. I don’t like using it even then and probably only actually apply it 3-4 times.

The sun has vitamin D, but you only need like 15-20 mins a day. And some people’s bodies won’t absorb that way, and an alternate source is required.

Best protection from the sun is covering up. Large brim hat, long sleeves, light colors. The sun will cook you in a very short time. Spend decades in it, and you’ll look like it.

Ok, I struggle with this one. I understand the argument. But, if I am going to the beach for 3 hours and don't put on sunscreen I will get badly sun burned and be in pain for days. What is the alternative?

  1. Don't stay out in the sun for too long - so don't go outside much
  2. Go outside all the time get a dark tan (which by the way also hinders Vitamin D from the sun)

What I know:

getting sun burned hurts getting sun burned too often may cause skin cancer chemicals in sunscreen may cause skin cancer (reality is California lists just about every chemical as cancer causing, I don't trust CA)

What is the alternative?

There are sunscreens that are safe, physical aka mineral sunscreens that sit on the skin and are not absorbed into the body.

Zinc paste for one. It is the classic used by lifeguards on their noses where sun reflecting off of sunglasses tends to cook you double time.

They also tend to wear hooded jackets and have umbrellas.

Stop cooking with vegetable oils and use butter or other animal fats instead. Increase red meat consumption and don't use sunscreen. Sunscreen clogs your pores and prevents your skin from performing an important function, of expelling cellular waste through sweat.

(I read the bit about vegetables oils here on GAW in 2021 and it made sense when I read it, but I don't have any sauce. Maybe some of our healthfags can add the reasons. But I'm from a family that's white like wonder bread, and I'm tan after I spend time in the sun. My sister with a "healthier" diet burns very easily. I've never used sunscreen, save once or twice.)

I have very white skin. I used to start to burn within 15 minutes of being outside and I love to garden. Then I made a total change of diet and added some super nutrients. I was shocked to realize that I quit burning so much. It took being outside for hours for me to burn. That is just personal experience. I no longer use any sunscreen, but if I am going to be outside for long. I wear a loose long sleeve, thin fabric shirt, a hat, and I rarely wear shorts. I had clients who came from California tell me that Vitamin C helps prevent sunburn. I also rarely use mosquito repellent. Mosquito coils work well for the most part. Whatever you put on your skin goes into your bloodstream within seconds. Choose wisely.

Already avoid seed oils and use butter. I heard that helps with sun too and know a guy who tried that with no sunscreen, he got sun burned pretty bad. I don't think it is the sole answer.

thanks for the info though.

Get a rash guard shirt and wear a wide-brimmed hat. We're switching to zinc-based sunscreen which is better for us because you can see where you haven't applied (lots of blonde kids). I'm not going to forgo sunscreen altogether because all four of the grandparents (70+) are dealing with skin cancer right now. Also coconut oil is naturally about SPF 15 iirc.

Excellent counterpoint. There are times when you'd think it would be necessary like your 3 hours at the beach scenario. And think about the Gingers! I know a Ginger kid who's a friend of my son. He is head-to-toe in sunscreen ALL THE TIME! If sunscreen is truly cancer causing, wouldn't all Gingers who sunscreen up heavy be susceptible to cancer?

Thank you. The answer like most things likely is moderation. Dont drink too much, don't eat too much, don't hang out in the sun too much, etc....

I will use suncreen, but not all the time and only for longer exposure.

Tough to do if you work outside, but then you need to wear spf clothing.

Use organic cold pressed coconut oil before and after you're in the sun.

In younger years I went on a Caribbean cruise - got absolutely lobster fried and native island people gave me fresh coconut oil...all the burn subsided and turned bronze within a day.

When I’m in Hawaii, a lot of the beaches have signs asking people to not wear sunscreen, because it kills off the reefs. that’s all you need to know. if it’s killing the reef, it’s probably killing people. I never wear sunscreen, and I’m there for six weeks at a time sometime. I don’t get burnt, maybe a little red the first week, but after that, it’s just Brown. But I don’t spend all day in the sun. it’s different when you’re living there not vacationing.

For 43 years ( ok maybe the first 38, the last 5 has seen me slow down some) I have spent 10 to 12 hours, 6 or 7 days a week, out in the sun shirtless in shorts, running my business. Never used even a dab of sunscreen. Never a problem.

Semi related, but thought I'd mention since you said shampoo. For quite some time I've been noticing a mild allergic reaction after taking showers, my hands and sometimes feet would be slightly tingly/itchy, and it'd subside after maybe 5-10 minutes or so.

I tried to figure out what it was, thinking maybe it was the conditioner, or the shampoo, or soap, or something, and kept removing this and that to try and catch what it was.

The other day I was in a hot tub for a bit and noticed the same reaction and finally put 2 and 2 together. It was the chlorine! City water so it's chlorinated, and while I haven't got a shower filter yet to remove the chlorine and prove that's what is causing the reaction, I'm pretty certain it's the cause.

Happy you figured out your own issue. Many docs and derms are clueless or won't tell you what the problem is. They want you coming back and for their drugs.

For $ 50 u can get a nice filter. Won't clear fluoride, but plenty of other harmfuls. We're currently using pelican for $80ish nowadays. Forget the reaction to skin part for a sec. Once u actually feel the water from a good filter, you'll never go back. Worth the $ 100 a year.

I cleared my own skin issues by changing to a good filter and good clean soap bar. The liquid types usually have parabens ( like shampoos ), anti caking chems, and other stuff that only belongs in a factory or lab.

Also if u take cold shorter showers ( whole list of other health benefits in that ) there's likely less toxin intake as your pores don't open up as much as with a hot shower.

▲ 2 ▼
– ancientarchitect369 2 points 284 days ago +2 / -0

I'll have to look into getting a filter. That's one of those things that I've always told myself I'd do at some point, but never really got around to. $80 isn't that bad. When it comes to the cold showers, I definitely know they're way better for you but I've been pretty terrible at actually getting myself to take them. I've just been trying to take warm-ish showers instead of hot, and cutting the time down as much as I can.

Any recommendations when it comes to drinking water? Currently I drink filtered water from a fridge, but I'm betting that while it filters some stuff out, it probably doesn't get much of the fluoride. I've thought about an RO system multiple times but never pulled the trigger.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– PaintingTruth17 1 point 284 days ago +1 / -0

Same here. Been eyeballing a $600 RO system from Menards for fluoride removal. Our fridge has filter that we change often and it shows in clarity, taste, and according to my tester, but no help with fluoride obviously.

In meantime we drink bottled spring water. Cook and do coffee/tea with distilled water.

U prolly know, but someone reading may not, if u go RO, you will need to add back in minerals with an extra RO system part ( more expensive ones may do this for you ) OR take supplements or drink electrolytes. RO removes everything, including the good stuff, but still outweighs taking poisons just to get some minerals.

I feel ya on the cold showers. Rough. I know it'll get easier and I do feel better and more productive when I take them, but damn. Takes practice. Still battling that one.

OF course sunscreen is critical. But not the toxic stuff from the CVS aisle. Nature's sunscreen, which is getting morning sun exposure before UV is present. Red and infrared light exposure in that time of day prepares the skin for the later UVB onslaught, and regulates the potential damage.

Tell people to get outside in the morning and expose as much as the eyes and skin as they can tolerate, and watch both sunburns and the "need" for sunglasses disappear. And yeah, sunglasses is another industry Psy Op meant to dumb us down and ruin our health. At least as bad as sunscreen, likely worse.
