Excellent post...Just a Shame and ironic that Starlink is Not allowed here in SA Considering Elon was born here... Because we have this thing called BEE...Black Economic Empowerment... The 'Government (ANC) demand 30% Ownership of Starlink in SA, and For now it seems as if Elon is not Giving in...which is Good...Everyone is sick to death of the Corruption in this Country......sorry for the rant. bad week...πππ€£
Prayers UP for SA!
πππ»
Amen, anon!
Can you not use it on the sly?
Its Very Difficult....
We have hundreds of examples of what happens to black run cities in the US. They don't run. They are all a mess of crime and corruption. I've yet to find one that wasn't, as much as I'd like to see a "Wakanda" city, they don't exist. I cannot fathom what SA is like now vs. 30 years ago. I pray for you brother and hope you can either get out or get your homeland back.
ππ»ππ»
purkiss, are you a fan of the springboks? I wish there were more teams in that league. But that is a great sport! Go........All Blacks. ;)
OF COURSE I'm a Springboks fan....ππ
BEE - how appropriate. They are murder hornets.

Hey I said that a few weeks back and got downvoted and told I was wrong kek
but anyhow, Starlink only working for TeamMobile right now. Need it for all carriers.
I don't think I'll purchase starlink for 10 days of darkness.
Works on AT&T. Or at least I can get signal. It's just a test mode, but I can ping a bird.
How do you test if you can get a signal?
I'm on a late model iPhone - 15 I think with latest iOS. I can ping, but no capability unless its SOS. Androids are different. Do some research. It's out there.
that's different satellite technology that Apple provides, not Starlink as far as I understand. All latest generation (15+) iPhones have sms and imessage and emergency stuff via satellite now. but starlink is only on TMobile as a cellular data option
I think you're right, but there really isn't any other low-earth orbit sat systems that would work with low power phones. The LTE backbone is involved with T-Mo for direct to sat. I'm not sure what other network they would be connecting to: https://www.macrumors.com/2024/11/15/iphone-satellite-feature-turns-two/
It's Globalstar, one of the older satellite phone networks: https://www.theverge.com/2024/11/1/24285347/apple-globalstar-investment-expansion-emergency-sos-satellite
Another one is Iridium - which until Starlink hit the poles was the only truly global satellite phone network. The phones basically work anywhere except inside a building/under a cover. Unfortunately, on the original GlobalStar and Iridium networks, data service is/was abysmal - Iridium's raw data speed is 2400 baud or 2.4 kilobits/s. Some of their newer devices are a bit faster. It's also extremely expensive compared to Starlink.
Satellite phones are fairly common in Alaska and on boats that travel in the open ocean. Garmin InReach communicators use the Iridium network.
ty. I have Iphone 10 and i get SOS mode when up in the mountains. So it doesn't let me SMS or iMessage. Maybe it's only for calling emergencies
That's a cellular SOS mode - the iPhone 10 does not have the satellite hardware. Basically that means the phone can see a mobile network, but is not authorized to roam on it. For example, you have T-Mobile and there is only an AT&T tower available. You can use it to call 911/112, but not anything else.
On the devices with the satellite hardware, a different icon appears in satellite SOS mode. It appears in the last image on this page in the screenshot if "Emergency SOS": https://support.apple.com/en-us/101573
In my opinion, while much better than nothing, the emergency SOS on iPhones definitely is NOT a replacement for true satellite phones and communicators (like a Garmin inReach).
The connection to the GlobalStar satellite requires quite a lot of power, which is difficult to achieve from a small device, so using the satellite SOS requires aiming the phone and is rather slow, whereas the InReach devices and other satellite devices have quite large antennas and do not have this issue. Note how chonky the Iridium 9575 Extreme is - this is a current model, the older ones are even bulkier: https://www.iridium.com/products/iridium-extreme/
The other issue with iPhone satellite SOS is that if it sees any mobile network at all - even one that is completely unusable (poor signal or a network issue where the tower works but can't connect upstream) it won't even let you connect to satellite. You cannot currently force the satellite SOS, or use it from airplane mode, which means if you don't put the phone in airplane mode while in edge cases like hiking in the mountains, you'll also experience terrible battery life.
Because of these, I'd say if you're going Innawoods/out of range on purpose, take an InReach or some other real sat device- they're not super expensive, and they work much better. At the same time, the existence of the satellite SOS as a last resort is a good thing, and it will/has probably helped some people.
That being said, I'm very interested to see how T-Mobile/Starlink LTE roaming works out.
Why does it feel like this is still at least a year away?
Iβll be fine and comfy. I got plenty of offline entertainment and I kinda want to live through it for fun.
Kek.
Some people may remember books, entertainment systems from a time not so long ago. They donβt require electricity or the internet.
I think weβll have power. I can play Age of Empires 2 for hours on my laptop lol. But if not cards and board games it is!
Well thatβs an idea. I havenβt had time to play a decent sim in years. Thanks fren, gonna download some over the weekend, on the final push for work now.
I still play aoe with friends online but I used to do weekly Lan parties with it too
Nice! My brother and I play. I stumbled back on it during Covid and was mind blown how many new civs and campaigns there are.
Unless you are using them at night.
I have quite a few books Iβve been wanting to get to. After a day or two of playing Risk with my kids, of course. Priorities.π
A dog and a stick shall do just fine.
You bully! Oh yeah - fetch. kek
Fetch with dogs daily. Keeps me grounded.
Yβall better hurry up with it. Govt shut down pending.

Hmm ya know QT, Iβm thinking this just might not be Mod-Helpful when it happens. Catsy would deeply frown. ππ
Surely, you can't be serious.
Classic⦠that movie passes the test of time, just like Blazing Saddles and the Wizard of Oz. You made me smile today
If Kash destroys the FBI and makes the HQ building into a museum of the Deep State there should be a media room where Blazing Saddles plays on a loop 24/7.
The museum itself would cause a liberal meltdown, but the media room would be the icing on the cake - as long as they put public streaming cams with audio in all 4 corners of the room. Oh - no censoring.
Glad I made you smile fren!
Avoid the fish. β οΈπ

Of course we're serious, and don't call Qanaut Shirley....
That's the reply I was looking for!
Thanks, Shirley!
No biggie, I have Starlink.
Unfortunately, there's quite a cost to using Starlink. Would if I could, definitely.
True, we got in when it first started to be talked about by Elon. We signed and then waited a year to get our dish so I think we may get a better rate.

No shit! I've read them, how did I miss that?
Same here. Makes you wanna go back and read every single one of them, but it does take a lot of time because of all the rabbit holes you eventually go down, thus you get weary of never getting to the end. That's why I like pedes on forums like this who remember a post or two and share it with us so we can go, "NO CRAP! I've read them, how did I miss that?" I feel your sentiment fren. Now I'm curious as to when the shut down will happen. Any bets?
They passed the spending bill. No Govt Shutdown.
Where do yousee they passed the spending bill? GWP is showing the bill Trump was pushing failed with 38 rinos against and Chip Roy giving a speech on the floor gainst it as a blue haired libtard conceded her time to him.
OH i read Trump's post and thought it passed without doing research. Something about delaying raising the debt ceiling for another 2 years
Cost has to come way down to use it as a backup. Like pay-per-use or something. Not paying for the hardware cost for it to sit idle just in case.
I can survive without the internet.
We use it as our primary internet service, it worked even during this yearβs hurricane. Went down once when it was attacked. Iβm in the sticks so itβs worth it to us as hubby works from home sometimes.
Who attacked your Starlink dish? Did you beat them up?
Nah, at one point Starlink went down for a little while. Elon posted about it.
Ah, I was hoping for an interesting story kek
Sorry about that, weβre so far out that it would have to be wild!
Probably the most important is to make sure you have CASH. There will be the assumption that the government will take care of us. It will be back up soon etc. When panic sets in, the last thing you need to be doing is trying to get cash out of an atm. Do some checking NOW at a Mom and Pop local store just outside the city to visit. Stay away from the large food stores - they will be bedlamβ¦β¦.and dangerous. The second most important thing is to have an alternate heating source. While these are basic, if you are in an apartment, these could be helpful. There are many other designs too. https://youtu.be/ozTmhfBfbA0?feature=shared
Cash will only be good for a few days. If comms go down commerce stops, no resupply even at your local mom n' pop. I'm guessing after 24 hours they probably close up if the payment processing doesn't come back online. Gas stations run dry almost immediately. Be prepared to stay close to home playing scrabble and eating some of that old canned soup from the back of the pantry. This is just for comms. If the power goes out for more than a few days all bets are off.
I have blankets
Thank you mods!
120/mo plus hardware is a bit much for me.
A general appeal to prudence. Winter is the season when natural events have the greatest likelihood of interrupting service (e.g., mostly storms and downed trees). I already went through a half day of internet outage due to power interruption from a windstorm. Past episodes in December have resulted in as much as a week without power. Not to mention interruptions from hurricanes or floods. (I am now considering the wisdom of investing in a battery backup for a week of outage---or maybe a month.)
Internet connectivity and quality is so up for grabs in some parts of the world (like Zambia) that Starlink would be a Godsend, if you could afford it.
We had a generac installed. Finally! My mom just can't handle the stress of no power or evacuating for hurricanes any longer.
In our coastal North Carolina community, it wasn't the hurricane that took our our power it was the massive flooding in the area. Those that weren't flooded found out fast that even their Generacs didn't work. The gas company just turned off the gas to everyone. Not to mention that those that did have a Generac and got flooded lost them to the flood waters.
Now we know even Mountain areas can flood and they actually lose their homes. At least mine could be salvaged even if it cost a bit to replace everything and rebuild the first floor.
I have an outlet outside for a portable gas powered one, but doubt we will ever be able to use it. I live to close to a river that had a thousand year flood after we survived Hurricane Flo winds. The flood hit us three day later. Seems like those hundred year ones (don't affect me) are happening more often.
Yeah we had a 1000 year flood in Livingston Louisiana where I had lived for about 10 years. I'm familiar with flash floods and hurricanes
I lived in a 100 year flood zone and got hit bad twice in 10.
It is good for peace of mind to know that you have that ability, even better when your neighbors decide that they need one as well.
Yes! My oldest son, my brother and my sister also had one installed. My youngest is renting but he and his fiance know they are always welcome here
Come on with it!!!
I wish i could afford starlink, or I would elon, i totes would.
I haven't ordered yet.. but i don't plan to hook up till i need it.
Does anyone know if i buy the hardware, that i can use the inactivated hardware to activate and get the 1st month? It's a pricey internet and I'd rather not have to spend that much unless i need to. I would prefer this internet, just not at this price.
Get the "mobile" package and you can both get cheaper service tier (with a download limit) and you can pause the service.
definitely the best option.. expensive but affordable.. im going to consider this now, thanks anon!
Yeah, in my truck Iβm going to do the mobile that way I can do it monthly and any months that I donβt want it. I just will shut off the $50 service fee for our house. We got it full-time and itβs $120 per month.
They will activate you automatically once you receive the equipment. I think it's after 60 days, but I could be wrong.
If you complain, they'll credit you for a month.
I only know because I'm in the sticks and didn't order the hardware to do the install until I had the unit in my hand. Some other projects got in the way while waiting on mount parts to be shipped and it took longer than expected. Got an email saying they were going to activate whether I was ready or not.
The sell refurbished equipment on starlink site now for half price
Starlink is partnered with T-Mobile, right? Do you still need Starlink even if you have T-Mobile Home Internet?
T-mobile acting hinky this afternoon
10 days of dankness when stock market crashes and Biden supposedly died tomorrow? Just a theory that's being passed around.. i'd really hate for all these shenanigans to happen but trust Q's plan
I donβt think the stock market will crash because of Biden dying but I get where youβre going with that line of thought.
I don't think so either..just what I heard from others like the 2 go hand in hand by design. It's like when Musk went on 60 mins and his stock crashed..doesn't make sense but it's their timeline agenda or whatever.
Iβm guessing Washington DC blacks out (rip biden???) a week (10 days?) before Trumpβs inauguration, and the US is βwithoutβ a president for that time.
Well, we've been without a president for 4 years now and we're still here lol.
We've been without a precipice for 4 years now and we're still here
I thought you wrote that, in which case I was going to say, yes, I agree, we need a precipice.
I was thinking something might start this Saturday (because of the Qpost that says: done in 30 ) and maybe the 1st 10 or the last 10 are what you are referring to. This would be high time for the white hats to pull it because the black hats clearly have something brewing
I welcome a blackout. The break would do us all good. We should be prepared enough to weather it.
Many people in the world today can use a nice 10 day vacation from the internet.A good mind cleanse.
I remember no Internet. It was infinitely better.
The problem with "Just get Starlink" as advice is that Starlink isn't cheap. In fact, it's very expensive for many (most?) of us.
This. Paytriot pops to mind, if we all should get it, then let's see some price drop.
Got me a little electric guitar called the DIGI-ZO ULTIMA. Its got a built in amp, speaker, effects, drums, you name it. Runs on a 9v battery. Get about a month out of a charge playing daily.
Here it is in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WsZ9keR9I8
Made in Japan and are a quality item. Collectable :)
Ooh nice! You have the most desirable model.
I would like to have one of the older Casio Digitars. Intl shipping would sting for a bit. Not many come up for sale in the West.
You can get it for 350 dollars down and 40 dollars a month .... And f course: switch off switch on if you need a little saving here and there and your lousy telecom provider is in the mood of giving you the speed and bandwidth you are paying for
Any word on the progress of the Tesla smartphone?
unfortunately I think that was just a rumor.
We have Starlink Roam because we are Overlanders. Works great!
ThankQ fren. Just ordered it incase of emergency. HAM radio antenna going back up asap too.
I know a couple of people that have Starlink as their ISP.
One says it is almost useless for his primary business use since he works almost exclusively in a shell, he keeps getting booted from his shell sessions.
This is not an issue with terrestrial internet connections.
The other one says it works fine for all other admin duties for both cloud services and on prem services over a VPN.
10 days darkness?
I LOVE my Starlink. Had it for a couple years now. It's great.
Verizon gigabit FiOS, $70 a month. I'm not switching or supplementing.
