Sorry to hear about your son.
Thank you for sharing.
Good to know. Wonder what the actual triggers are. Your son is included in our prayers.
My son has autism and it can be any of the senses that can be overstimulated, a loud noise, a strong smell, a tickle from his clothing, etc... For my son, he gets migraines which can cause nausea.
That's quite a challenge in day-to-day stuff. I feel for you. Praying for healing for all of us.
Yes it can be🙏thank you!
I've never been diagnosed but I'm certain I fall somewhere on the spectrum. I won't go into all the symptoms but they're classic.
I remember years ago while on a family vacation we went with friends to a Rainforest Cafe. I lasted about 10 minutes and had to leave and I've never gone back. If you've ever been you know about all the stuff going on - all the noises, lights, kids everywhere, crowded, birthday waiter chains singing and (in my case) carrying lit sparklers. It was complete sensory overload. I sat in the car listening to Pink Floyd while everyone else ate dinner. Dark Side of the Moon or The Wall always works for me.
The only place I can go with all the different lights and noises is a casino. I think it is probably because they are all programmed - all the sounds flow together, the lights aren't harsh, and all the flashy stuff is around the perimeter.
WalMart doesn't bother me at all - except for it either being too hot or too cold. They're just cheap.
I have an autistic son as well. Different issues, but it makes regular life a challenge. Life-long meds is an awful sentence; medbeds and similar stuff can't come soon enough.
I remember that.
Finally! I can turn up my beat box without worrying about the piped-in store music!
There you go.
Walmart lights mess me up!! I think it’s the “new” type of bulbs. 10 minutes tops before I gotta get outta there. Hopefully it’s to turn off the damn lights.
They turn me into Ms. Magoo.
I don't know if it's the lights or just the general atmosphere for me, but ten minutes is about my limit as well. Fortunately I don't go there often because I think Walmart is evil, but so many smaller stores are now history in my area, that there isn't much choice.
I never heard that one.
Some people with cognitive disabilities or disorders sometimes need a more mellow experience. I think that's all this is.
I wish Wal-Mart would do something about people bringing in their dogs. Your dog does not belong in the grocery store unless you have a genuine disability that requires it. Otherwise keep Fido home and be a responsible pet owner.
Agree about the dogs. For some reason my local Home Depot is the go to for dogs. Maybe they do a lot of home projects, but they don't belong in shopping carts, or in checkout lines. I've seen one or two real service dogs there, but mostly just people's pets. As much as I loved my dog it never occurred to me that he needed a trip to a big box store.
If this were the case it wouldn't just be for a couple months.
I can tell ya, if you go late night, or early morning, like 2 or 3 am, you will see some ugly hideous people, folks that don’t want to be seen in the daytime. I was repairing computers then and wow.
I guess that's where they got all the pictures of people of Walmart.
That is my time to sleep not go to Walmart.
Yea, I don’t do that anymore, some of them are no longer 24 hours either.
Modern music bad! Angry all the time. Can't get the fudge outta there fast enough. Bring back muzak 1970s style.
There are many adults on the spectrum.
This only last a few weeks.
Exactly.
Sounds like a good time to sport a maga hat and trigger the libs
A couple stores near me do something they’ve called sensory friendly
Basically lights are dimmer. Radio either off or very low. Staff mostly doing fronting of departments as opposed to stocking and moving carts of merchandise around
Might be the same thing or something similar
In my life I've never heard of or did I ever see them have a need for anything like this before.
The world is a bunch of babies.
Precisely
Bingo.
Surprised I had to scroll this far too see the correct answer. I wish more stores around me did this, I enjoy shopping so much more with no music and slightly dimmer lights
I immediately jumped to the conclusion that parents oblivious to their screaming, aisle running children would be stopped at the door. heh
On the fluorescent lights in Walmarts - I can't see well at all in those stores post cataract surgery (and can see fine elsewhere except low light spots) and a friend, whose wife has eye damage from lifelong Type 1 diabetes said she has the same problem. Those cheap fluorescents are horrible. I can believe they would trigger seizures too.
Possibly.
That music! Who picks this stuff? Is their purpose to drive us out of the store when the screaming, running amok children doesn't work? (BTW, I love children but not when they're racing around making me fear they're going to run into me and knock me over or screaming in my ears.)
It could very possibly be an experiment with frequencies or something similar. They know the majority of people got the killer jab which contains graphene oxide and nanobots.

That might be the first reasonable explanation I have heard.
They want people to shop at the slow time,as they don't want their checkers standing around.....
Looks like they hired a bullshit artist to say that.
Those hours are on a Saturday morning.
I have been in there at those times and it's packed so that's not what they're trying to do and it's only a limited amount of days and time.
Look and see if their are not one or two checkers waiting or if the lines are shorter......
The Walmart near me has about fifteen checkouts but only a few have an actual checker. They also have many self checkouts and the lines are always long. One more reason I hate Walmart.
If you hate it don't shop there.
I don't shop their cause I once needed a gallon of milk and some cat food. It was like a mile walk....
This is an attempt by Walmart to rebalance their employee load. They have underutilized staff early from 8-10 am and overworked staff later. By conning customers to come in early, they avoid overworking staff later or can reassign staff to get by with less, saving them money all by changing their customers behaviors. Trust me when I say Walmart only takes action where they make money.
I have been in Walmart at those times. They are packed.
So that isn't it.
And I have been in there during that time and it was empty, so that is it. And remember, they are talking Saturday only, not all week. Saturday mornings its dead in most stores,
This particular Walmart I have been in there and it us busy.
sensory friendly are buzzwords in the special ed community; means they’ve eliminated anything that might be overstimulating; lighting, loud music, etc. similar to safe spaces…for people who can’t function in a regular environment. I would imagine it’s much like shopping at WM early in the morning on a weekday; different kind of crowd/ambience; much calmer
I would guess so but it only a few weeks.
What about the other months?
I have wondered, too. Here's what some msm wrote about it. Personally, it sounds like a goodhearted thing
Thank you for your research.
Funny in 60 plus years we never saw a need for this.
Well, vaccine induced autism wasn't as big of a thing 60+ years ago.
If we would be honest as a society about HOW and WHY so many kids are ending up autistic, between the vaccines and other poisons, I would be a lot more open to the occasional few hours of quiet time at a store for people with real disorders.
What do you wanna bet this has the opposite effect?
Seriously tho, maybe they're going to trial a "planet fitness" style policy? Remove loud and rowdy customers.... Yeah I don't see this going over well!
I am baffled 🤪🤪.
First off, calm down with the all caps. It's triggering my sensory sensitivity.
That is a good one.
They used to have senior-friendly hours during covid when supposedly there were fewer people and less chance of being exposed. That was early every morning, like 6-9. At most stores 8-10 is when they are restocking and you have less chance of getting what you want before 10.
Maybe they are going to sneaky-experiment with sending out synthetic oxytocin through the vents. LOL. Funny not funny
I would just like a day when the cookie and chip isle shoppers didn't reek of pot!
Is shopping at Walmart triggering people so they need to do this?
I laughed when I read this
They're going to turn off the security cameras, blindfold the employees, and send the security officers on break, so they don't "offend" anyone.
Ha ha.
Thanks to all who answered.
It just reminds me of people saying they need a safe space.
My husband asked if they were handing out coloring books and crayons during those hours.
