We got assigned partners for a project today and mine is a mtf transgender person. I honestly never met one irl so it's pretty strange to say the least. I guess he's been identifying as a girl since he was 12 and looks pretty close to one now (minus some obvious differences.)
I have no idea how I should navigate this. I don't want to be an asshole or anything but it's kind of awkward. Everyone knows I'm conservative too which is why I probably got assigned him.
Edit: The project is somewhat related to gender so that makes it a bit harder.

How will they know the way if we do not show them? You can openly disagree with someone’s lifestyle and be a good example of how to live a Christian life. I get it, I don’t want to be around those people! But how else would they have a chance to change their lives and repent if we don’t show them it’s possible?

That's fair. Most of the trans ppl I've met in life (two of them anyway) were just very damaged people who really felt conflicted and needed a friend. And this was @ 15-20 years ago before trans was really a thing

We have a couple in the fire department. It’s uncomfortable having to be so guarded when they’re in my classes. ‘Guys’ is used so often in normal conversation. And the little she wanting to be he nazi seems to be waiting to pull a gotcha and cause trouble.
That's what I did - called my co-worker by their female name - although the pronoun thing was not in the forefront 10 years ago.
My advice: Just do the assignment. Don't say too much because this may be a set-up to make you look like an asshole. Make sure you are around a lot of potential witnesses while you work on the project.
I had to work with one transgender a few years ago when I was still in the Entertainment Industry. This was before the pronoun craziness and other insane garbage. We just did our work and I decided to treat the person with respect. Surprisingly, the transperson was good at their job. Your mileage may vary.
I concur with the good advice here and above (sorted by top comments). Be Christlike but cautious and do everything out in the open. Treat the person with respect, give no reason for suspicion to arise, and don't let anyone bait you. Focus on getting the work done so you can get your good grade. You're right - this is the kind of thing liberal "educators" often pull to make their point - but don't get caught up in their hang-ups.

Only talk about the assignment. Don't get off the path of doing your job and get dragged into the weeds. Being a professional means staying on task and getting the job done. You're going to have to work with all kinds of people in life. Treat everyone the same. People are either competent or not. Make sure your half of the assignment kicks ass.

Be creative with it but, don't allow anyone to cross your boundaries, (your trans teammate making it all about them/trans and such) don't have to be rude to hold your line, just be polite but firm, meet halfway if that will help both of you get a good grade.
This is a good assignment and a great teacher. If you totally learn the lessons in this you could easily develop these skills to create your own business based on data and conclusions you have already made about what product is most successful. If your teacher is really smart and ambitious, he is using your class to delegate the research phase of his own plan to become a millionaire by selling whatever product you little turds come up with on Amazone. Think like an entrepreneur. Collect the data and then SELL THE IDEA of your product to your classmates/teacher. Let your partner focus on SELLING the product with ~her charisma. Ask her upfront how she wants to be called. The teacher made you her partner because he believes you are a capable person. Be the backbone of the project and let your partner be the flair. You win her over, you win the teacher over, all the girls in the class, and make all the dudes look like knuckleheads in comparison. Just be cool and smile. Life is a game. The assignment is simple. Find a product that could make you a lot of money if you sold it online. Bonus points for coming up with a new marketing ploy. Use midjourney to create AI artwork for this new angle on an existing product. Easy A and gets you all the real girls because you handle this so well. good luck!

I would just be Professional and show to your class that you have the capacity to see different points of view while staying true to yourself and your beliefs, if you think it’s a “test” getting paired up with this one because you’re openly conservative, it probably is.

For instance, here is MY personal experience. I am a biological woman. I spend $0 on cosmetics and I buy 90% of my clothing at secondhand stores. Underwear, socks, shoes, and winter coats/boots I buy new. This is MY experience. Do you see how skewed it is? As a data point, I am an outlier.

Maby you two do interviews with females in your school about their spending habits. I am female myself but, couldn't tell you how others spend their money, I have never been the type to chase what's new for the year, what is considered the in thing more the creative type, extra cash spent on crafting or creative projects over bling that will just go out of style next year. lol. 16 female vr 30yrld different, married vr non married vr children or no children for older women. I am sure females in your class do not spend on the same things as well. My mother was the accountant in our house, my father was the one always buying random things but, only if mom gave him the ok for the month especially if we had a big expense coming up or house repair, doctor bills or new car need and all. lol

I don't know I mean I personally HATE all trans things at any age, but then again it is clear these people have deep deep deep mental issues and/or had fucked up parents/childhood growing up. Part of me shows empathy towards the ones that stay away from children and are against child mutilation. Communicate from afar.. Text as much as possible..... use Zoom if you have to. You can identify without having little to none transportation. Transsexuals have a much higher rate of schizophrenia, impulsive anger issues, and mental issues. Beware of any who masks their true identity.
It's a pretty intensive project so I'll probably have to come to his house and stuff. It's the biggest grade of the year and a ton of work.
I would never enter a home of a stranger, especially if you knew they are transsexual. In my mind, red flags are raised everywhere concerning this. Do it by zoom. There's no project in all my years that requires being present at someones house. If you have to, you can meet at the school or in a public place. The project work is typically divided up, to which each person researches it from their own end. Then project members compare notes, collate, and fuse together a paper with the final results. Even the conclusion is written by one person with input from others.
What if this person claims you sexually accosted them? And 'bears false witness' against you? These people are committing suicide at a 50% rate. The mental issues are off the chart. Don't put yourself in a needless situation. You posted this on this board for a reason. Your gut is telling you something. Listen to it.

Can you do your work in public places like libraries and coffee shops? Sorry to say but it's always best to err on the side of caution and be around people/witnesses as much as you can. If it ever comes down to "he said, she said", you will lose.

Since he isn't the project, just focus on that. I would not give him any reason at all to make a fuss about himself, since this is your first time, it is distracting, and repulsive, just try and focus on the project. Think of it as a disability and maybe you can find peace in your mind about that. Many of these folks are in a gradient of vulnerable narcissists, so just focus on the project. Are you Christian? Take your concerns to the Lord and ignore it. It is a disability, and when a lot of people find themselves working with a disabled person, they are uncomfortable. Do you have a rapport with the instructor? Perhaps you could be honest about being uncomfortable, but be careful with that too, it could be easily misconstrued in the political climate. I see local Mennonites in the general public, shopping at Price Chopper, at the gas stations, farmers markets (of course, duh.), and they are polite, down to business at hand, though I am sure in their world, they see a lot of people they cannot wrap their heads around. If they become inappropriate, sexual harrasment is a thing. Pray for him, he needs it.
Realistically, don't be an asshole and do focus on getting your project done. Your future is too important to blow it up on a few seconds of fame on GAW or Truth Social.
God willing, your partner will respect your boundaries, since it is his grade too. If he doesn't, talk to him respectfully to mind his manners. If he persistent, then bring it up with your professors, and let them take care of it.
Would address her as she/her if obviously living as female. Its the in-betweens and non-binarys that have the pronoun drama. Treat her as an individual and not part of the mob, as long as she is interacting with the same respect.
Wont be popular, but i believe there are a few real trans. Have heard and read that God doesnt create trans. But He doesnt create stillborns, down syndrome, kleinfelters, hermaphrodites, or childhood cancer victims either. God creates perfection, but we are away from God, in a fallen world, where things, and processes, can go wrong. Believe God will restore her to His perfect creation with faith in Jesus.

Mutual respect. I don't mind calling an individual person by "preferred pronouns" if they're being respectful to me. That's my choice to show them respect. It's when they make demands and tell me what to do when I oppose it.

Don’t be a jerk but don’t compromise your logic. This could be a great opportunity to show this guy why he will never be a girl. You can do all that while showing him you love him as a human and not giving into the lies and delusions he might have about gender.

I would suggest be a good listener. Try to be empathetic towards them. They are confused and who know why they are the way they are. It could be attached to something traumatic. But if they start speaking as if their opinion is science be ready to use logical facts to express why you cannot agree with them. And if it gets heated I would state that things are heated and our time is better spent working on the project. Hopefully that is some helpful advice. I’m a believer so I would also be praying for wisdom and a chance to show Christs love towards them.
This person might be a victim of a councilor, teacher, or parent. If the councilor says "you're not trans," they loose a client. 12 year old boys can be mean to each other so I could see him not wanting anything to do with them.
It also just might be the clothes. Men's clothes are utilitarian and dull. Women's clothes are styled to be visually attractive. Thank you Fetterman for demonstrating how unattractive men's casual clothes are today.
If it's legal (in a 1 party state) secretly record your meetings with an audio recorder app or CosyDVR for video. Test it out first. You don't want your phone to chime every 10 minutes. And maybe take some ivermectin etc. so you don't catch the hypothetical trans parasites.
